Metallica To Reunite With Former Bassist For Rock Hall Induction

Metallica To Reunite With Former Bassist For Rock Hall Induction

Metallica's former bassist Jason Newsted will reportedly join Metallica on stage when the veteran rock band is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month.

The band, who will be inducted by Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea, said that they were inspired to reunite with their estranged bassist, who left the band in 2001, largely due to awkwardness they witnessed when Blondie were inducted in 2006.

"Jason Newsted will be there, and he will be playing with us at one point," guitarist Kirk Hammett said. "We went as a band when Black Sabbath was being inducted, and at that time Blondie was also being inducted that night. And there was so many politics and so much drama that, you know, we collectively said to each other, 'We don't want any of that,' because it kind of, it puts a really bad, sour note on the whole celebration itself."

The band are also expected to perform at the ceremony, which takes place in Cleveland on April 4, reports Blabbermouth. Metallica's current bassist, Robert Trujillo, is also expected to attend the ceremony.

Thanks for the report to Nme.com.

Dude.... Obviously you haven't been paying attention. Cliff's been dead for 25 years. What the **** are they supposed to do? Exhume his (half) body and re-animate him so they can play 'Bells? And while you're at it, what about Dave and Ron. You failed to mention them even.

Come to think of it.... what the hell did happen to Ron.

I remember reading that everyone who was in the band when an album came out will be invited to attend (ie, that's why Mustaine wasn't invited).
I'm sure they will mention Cliff during their acceptance speech.

that's all speculation as far as who's better, but i don't believe it was so much jason's attitude as it was the way the rest of tallica treated him

ok he got writing credits on songs and only wrote a few riffs in kill em all, and a few riffs on ride the lighting and a few on call of ktulu he didnt write anything past that. And a rumour i heard was that kirk wrote the ride the lighting solo and that dave got writing credits for some of the riffs even the demo for it had kirk on it. The only thing dave appeared on was no life till leather and RTL was not on it.

How was Jason not an integral part of Metallica? How many albums was he a part of? For f's sake, after cliff died (r.i.p.) he came in and was a HUGE part of metallica until he left. What I dont' get is why ppl are passing judgement on nothing that they actually know about. Not one of us was there when they decided to go seperate ways so no one can judge him or anyone else in Metallica. Give it a break. I think it's great Jason will be there and hopefully it goes over smoothly and there are no hard feelings between any of them.

Long live Metallica
(wouldn't it be cool if they decided to get back together with Jason and ditch Rob. I just personally don't like Rob's playing style)

don't forget jason was their bass player from like 1986 till 2001, and seen them through 5 Studio Albums (if you include garage inc) so its fair that he's honoured, i don't think he'd be playing on stage with them if rob had a problem with this, Rob has only recorded one very recent studio album for them and although a great bass player is the "new guy", this award is based on metallica in the last 25 years, it would be wrong to not acknowledge/invite rob, i heard mustaine was invited actually? or was that a rumour, he turned it down on the grounds of he was touring europe at the time??

and c'mon ron hasn't exactly been involved in much of their stuff.. and of course cliff will be honoured, but you know he's dead... its not like they can invite him...

Since nobody has addressed it: When Blondie was inducted the band performed with only Debbie H. and one or two original members, while the rest of the original lineup was there and guitarist Infante even asked Debbie while accepting his award if they could perform she said "not tonite" and "cant you see my band is up here." They had been in legal turmoil for some time, but they came across as low class what with bickering onstage. Its good that Metallica is gonna perform with Newstead and is above that petty bickering (I hope) and im sure Rob understands he was given the keys to a kingdom that Burton and Newstead helped create so he shouldnt have a problem with that. And im sure if Cliff was alive and had left the band they would have also brought him back to perform like Jason, unfortunately thats not possible but if they bring Jason back to perform Im sure they will honor Cliff too.

I doubt we'll be seeing a Deth-Tallica tour. As much as the bands themselves may be over their past issues, face it, the fans would absolutely slaughter each other during that gig. There'd be tons of crap about "which band performed better" and at the end of the day, no one would be happy.

From what I've read Jason left the band because he wanted to make music period; and to be in Metallica, you have to be exclusive to Metallica. No side projects or anything because it takes away from Metallica. It'd be different if they'd been recording and touring and stuff, but they weren't and he still couldn't do anything. He got bored and musically frustrated. Add in Lars running around like a bossy little bitch to everyone around I'd probably have beat his ass.

I'd say I think Trujillo is a better bassist than Jason and you can't fault him for join Metallica. Honestly, if you Metallica came and asked you to replace their bassist and you were capable you'd bet there in a heartbeat.

1) The band will realize what it was with Jason and tell that frog walking mother****er Trujillo to pack it back to Ozzy.

2) They play, they say a few words, they part.

Or 3) a zombified Cliff Burton takes the stage, eats Rob, rips out Jason's throat, and the band, with Cliff, rips into Creeping Death.

yeah, obviously metallica is known for saying/doing one thing and then saying/doing completely the opposite. like the napster thing? and then this? metallica does not deserve the spotlight anymore. they are too old and their time is done. im not saying bands should quit when theyre old, im saying metallica should. some bands reinvent themselves as they get older but metallica tries to revisit their old shit.

I think Metallica inviting Jason Newstead to join in their induction is a great thing. Obviously, they wouldn't share their induction with Dave 'cause he's got his own share of good stuff going for him. Megadeth's one of the best bands in the world, as is Metallica.

The only thing I hope doesn't happen is that Trujilo and Newstead team up to do a version of Anestisia(Pulling Teeth) as a momento to Cliff. They would probably mess it up.

UG has a hard-on for Metallica and Guns N' Roses. It's all good because they're my favorite bands anyway hehe. This is strange news, to say the least. I didn't like Jason in Metallica much except for his backup singing which was exceptional. I prefer Rob as a bassist, but you can't hear much of him on Death Magnetic, can you?

I don't get the Robert bashing. He was one of those bassists directly influenced by Cliff - listen to alot of his S/T stuff. Jason was a pocket player that just doubles everything James did. He was a solid bass player, but bassists like Cliff was and Robert is are a different breed (besides both being finger-style).

I remember reading that everyone who was in the band when an album came out will be invited to attend (ie, that's why Mustaine wasn't invited).
I'm sure they will mention Cliff during their acceptance speech.

I thought the guitar recorded in Kill Em' All was(if not mostly) Mustaine?

Nope. I think Mustaine and Hetfield wrote and composed all the songs. But when it came to record Mustaine got kicked out cuz of his drinking. So when they got Kirk he knew all the material. He was asked to play the first few measures of Dave's solos and then he composed the rest. By the way Hammet is better than Dave,Newstead better than Crab boy(woopwoopwooopwoop) and Cliff is uber ausome(r.i.p)

They had been in legal turmoil for some time, but they came across as low class what with bickering onstage. Its good that Metallica is gonna perform with Newstead and is above that petty bickering (I hope) and im sure Rob understands he was given the keys to a kingdom that Burton and Newstead helped create so he shouldnt have a problem with that. And im sure if Cliff was alive and had left the band they would have also brought him back to perform like Jason, unfortunately thats not possible but if they bring Jason back to perform Im sure they will honor Cliff too.

im sure they are gonna do that at the induction ceremony, but until they get on stage and talk about cliff what do u expect them to do?

Jason does deserve this because he was with the band for about ten years, and put out both and justice and the black album with them, while many fans may not like the black album it is essentially the album that made metallica a household name

Rob did not put out St. Anger he joined after, the only cd hes released with them was death magnetic, and the reason he is doing is becuase he is currently part of the band whether he contributed to their success in the early days or not he is still part of the band right now.

Dave Mustaine helped write most of kill em all and a few songs off ride the lightning, the band still credits him for helping to write call of ktulu, and again he was part of metallica so therefore he got an invite.

im not saying they all 100 percent deserve it but thats why each of them are going, because they all contributed to the band in a major way at some point in the bands career

first off they basically have no bass on ..and justice for all, they jus quitened him down and when he walked out later they did regret what they did to him (if anyone has watched some kind of monster)

an about cliff, well what can i say that hasnt already, the man is a ledgend and it was no doubt really hard for jason to follow that but its all over now and times have changed so stop bad mouthing jason and jus move on

plus mustaine isnt coming cause there is a big hatred between him and hetfield, plus i doubt hetfield would have been invited if it was the other way around!

The Metallica guest list for the April 4 induction includes staffers from the band's previous labels, Megaforce and Elektra, journalists and photographers who have been supportive over the group's career, producers and musician friends. Metallica also invited founding guitarist Dave Mustaine, who is unable to attend, and former bassists Ron McGovney and Jason Newsted, who will. Newsted also plans to perform with Metallica during the ceremony. Ray Burton, father of Cliff Burton, who was Metallica's bassist from 1982 until his death in 1986, will accept on behalf of his son.

dave also wrote a majority of the Ride The Lightning riffs and was only credited with 1 or 2 of the songs and even bits of master of puppets was in part, some of daves work. so basicly dave only gets about half of the credit that he contributed to metallica.

Meant to say that if anything Dave's decline was pretty much neutral or if anything he meant the best behind it so if anything it was more or less a nice decline, he's held up by the tour and he couldn't exactly be at two places at once.

I had never expected Jason NOT to be there. I doubt there will be any awkward moments, the whole band seems pretty comfortable in their skin at this point. I'm sure Rob will have no problem at all; I got to meet him on the first leg of the NA DM tour and he is a really cool guy.

Quoting Scott Ian of Anthrax: "Without Mustaine, there is no Metallica; without Mustaine, there may be no thrash metal."

Dave had brought several songs from his band Panic to Metallica, some got used, some didn't. Jump In The Fire and Phantom Lord are two of which he brought; they slapped writing credits for the rest of the band on them. Metallica was a NWOBHM band without Mustaine, period. He gave them their sound, their attitude and a good deal of their noteworthy material. When Kirk was brought in, he was told to "play like Dave did."

Period.

Congratulations to Metallica!
Megadeth is eligible next year, maybe Metallica will attend his?

They need to stuff burtons body and just bring him on stage with 'em. Trujillo nor Newsted could EVER take his place. If jason newsted is with them, or trujillo for that matter, then it is not metallica getting inducted, its some-band-that-used-to-be-good-but-then-their-bass-player-di ed-and-they-got-a-pussy-bitch-to-play-in-lieu-of-Cliff getting inducted

You can't blame him for having the same skills as Cliff. Not to mention the mix in AJFA leads me to believe that he wasn't very well treated there (at least before Bob Rock produced their albums).

I'm not a big 'tallica fan though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Mustaine co-wrote much the guitar for KEA. Kirk recorded it pretty much note for note from Mustaine's work, except where he saw room for improvement. By the time recording day arrived, Mustaine had been fully replaced by Hammett. Musically, the songs had been established prior to Mustaine's 'exit'.

Yeah, people need to get off Jason and quit saying he was a dick. He wasn't at all. They'd be upset too if they got a chance to join their favorite band, just to find out they don't like you and treat you badly. Everything Jason did was "wrong" and I really felt bad for him, but I'm also proud he hung in there for so long. He did it for us and people need to realize that.

Ok even if Mustaine accepted their invite and played he still wouldnt be in the hall of fame with them. Bands dont get to pick which members get inducted - the R and R hall of fame does. Same goes with Jason - even if they hadnt invited him to play with them, he still would've been inducted since he played on some albums.

I cant believe so many stupid people are confused about whos playing bass. they BOTH are. SOme of you seem to think theyre having jason play as their bassist for their induction while rob sits out for the night - WRONG! Either theyll both play at the same time or theyll take turns playing. Why would rob sit out since hes being inducted too?

Jason back? Why should he be standing there, he and metallica should be done with each other. From the Kill'em all album till the Justice for all album was mostly Cliff Burtons work and master pieces of metallica. Jason contribution to the band wasn't that much. Robert is now in the band and he should get the credit. Jason took some risks during metallica and one of them was ended his carreer in metallica. He is responsible for his own mistakes and ****ed up before they got rewarded with a pic in the rock and roll hall of fame, bad luck for him.

For one, Cliff made Metallica who they are now. I am 100% sure that Cliff will be one of the first subjects mentioned. Another thing is Ron should be also because if it weren't for him booking all of 'tallicas early gigs they wouldnt be here. The last point, Jason was there the entire career just about with exceptions of only MoP, RTL, KTA, St.Anger, and Death magnetic. If jason didn't come back that would be ignorant and stupid. Robert, with all respect to him, has done nothing for metallica yet. So Jason is obviously going to be there.

He is responsible for his own mistakes and ****ed up before they got rewarded with a pic in the rock and roll hall of fame, bad luck for him.

and justice for all was definitely Jason. IE cliff died in 86.

AND Jason's contribution as minimal? Do you know nothing of metallica? Why should robert get credit for music he didnt write?

um how bout we just bring cliff back so he can battle trujillo? Just like that last sentence, that comment was stupid. of course trujillo would dominate but i would easily take jason over robert. yeah ehs a great bass player but jasons voice is legendary.

They should at least honor him! I mean, Jason "FUCKING LEFT THE FUCKING BAND" as Lars said! Cliff put his blood, sweat, and tear into that music!

Mustaine was invited, he just couldn't attend due to resting from Priest Feast (according to him)...

metallica isnt even considering dave and ron for credit to their induction, i mean they helped write and record material on the old shit. i think they should at least consider giving them credit, if i was a part of a band and years later after i was gone they got awards for hard work, i was a contribute to their success, and i didnt get mentioned at all, id b pissed off

To all those idiots out there who think Dave Mustaine wasnt on a Metallica album you should listen to the original Kill-em all and Ride the lightening when they first came out. Dave Mustaine helped create Metallica.Infact he was the best guitarist they ever had. Why dont they invite Joe Satriani the one who taught Kirk Hammet how to play guitar in the first place lol. Oh well this is an old article anyways.

Who's Ron?

Ron was James' roommate who played bass until they found Cliff

James taught him bass...

FUCK JASON he has no talent. all he did was copy James and Kirk the whole time and didn't even write his own bass lines. Rob deserves to go in with them. If Jason isn't in the band, he doesn't deserve to play WITH the band. If he was too much af an ass to not stay focused on one of the most succesful bands in history and go do his own crap, let him play at the hall of fame when one of his shitty side projects gets good enough.

if he followed james and kirk isnt that writing your own bass line? King Nothing? Enter Sandman? I won't argue for the fact that I think you are on pcp.

FireBirdKing wrote on 04/03/2009 - 09:07 am / quote |
Oh and he left because the others werent as focused FYI he is the only one NOT married. James more or less kicked him out for Echo Brain. You know nothing of metallica so you are not entitled to an opinion. go finish your pcp...
