Stone Temple Pilots: 65-Date Tour

Rock band Stone Temple Pilots, whose reunion has been overshadowed by singer Scott Weiland's latest contretemps, will launch a 65-date tour of North American amphitheaters next month, the group's representatives said on Thursday.

The announcement came two days after Weiland was ousted from Velvet Revolver, the all-star band he ditched Stone Temple Pilots for in 2003.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Velvet Revolver cited his "increasingly erratic on-stage behavior and personal problems." Weiland angrily countered the next day that his bandmates were "discontents" engaged in a "a blatant and tired excuse to cover up the truth," which was that the band had not been getting along for some time.

On the other hand, Weiland said his STP colleagues "have always had my back."

STP's first tour in almost eight years has been in the works for some time, with dates announced last month for a half-dozen festival slots in the United States and Canada, beginning May 17 at Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio.

Details of the trek, running through November, will be announced on Monday evening during a party at the Hollywood Hills estate once owned by magician Harry Houdini. Weiland, along with brothers Dean and Rob DeLeo, on guitar and bass, respectively, and drummer Eric Kretz, will perform.

STP last toured in 2002, playing about a dozen shows to promote their final album, "Shangri-La Dee Da," which was released the year before.

The band, whose momentum was often curtailed by Weiland's frequent drug problems, fell apart shortly afterward. The band's popularity had been waning anyway, with sales falling far short of those for their first few albums, which boasted such hits as "Sex Type Thing," "Vasoline" and "Interstate Love Song."

Velvet Revolver's fortunes have also been on a downward trajectory. Founded by three former members of Guns N' Roses, the band enjoyed a surprise hit with its debut album, 2004's "Contraband," which sold 2 million copies in the United States and yielded a Grammy.

But last year's follow-up, "Libertad," has sold only 288,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Ironic that they've always had his back but they weren't touring together??? Ya, I bet the DeLeo brothers were just as happy to to do a frekin' pub tour as they were to do stadium tours in the last 5 years. Typical of a a washed up burn-out. Thanks Scott!

Haha, silly bastard. When the elapsed time since their last tour is about 6 years, it really isn't appropriate to say that it's close to 8.

Anyway. Yay for STP gettign back together. Love this band. Maybe they'll write some more new stuff again.

I saw VR a few years ago and Scott ruined the ****in show he just couldn't sing for shit live and I told some friends and they went and saw them and AIC a few months ago and they said the same thing they said he was horrible and ruined the show so I just don't know if this will be worth the money

(Made a prediction back when talk of STP touring was just starting hoping that they would play The Marcus (main stage at Summerfest) with Alice In Chains. Praying this might come true!)

That's really uncool that Libertad didn't sell so well. It's one of the best bloody albums I've EVER HEARD. And I've heard a lot of rock albums, so I know these guys are quality. Gonna miss Scott's vocals for VR, but STP is awesome likewise.

I think only true friends are the only one's with the balls enough to stand up and be The Assholes that the 3 others were forced to be. You must admit, most quasi-functional frontmen don't land the job of writing songs with the guns of GNR. At the moment in time when they made Contraband was apon us, the rock scene was lacking talent(still is), even though you could tell VR wasn't "cutting edge", people who enjoyed music of a bygone era had something to dig. I just hope Axl has been humbled enough to want to reunite with the guns. The world would be better that way. Original GNR, original STP.

I totally agree. I love STP and VR but Scotts just such an a*shole... or at least has become one. A shame too, because if they come to my town I dunno if I'd see 'em. Lets see, i've seen STP in concert back in the day and have seen VR in concert, and have also seen the new GNR in concert. I'm not sure why people think scott weiland is so great. He's really not a good singer. Not much range and is pretty much a problem waiting to happen. The dudes rail thin, looks like he's going to die, has the manurisms of a woman and at the end of the day is pretty much white trash. Even though Axl is a jerk as well, you can watch his performance and say damn, that dude can wail on the vocals.

Scott used to have a better range back when they did Core and he had weight on him lol. As for now, I don't care for the way he sings, its to high pitched. He has a great raspy deeper voice (ie - Plush, Interstate Love Song, Down, Dead and Bloated). Oh and not to mention when him and Dean did the unplugged acoustic of Plush, that was pretty sweet. But he goes through these phases it seems of deeper, raspier voice and then higher pitched.. We'll see..
