Chickenfoot have released their highly anticipated debut album and as soon as the news about the forming of the supergroup hit the streets fans of Van Halen, Joe Satriani and The Red Hot Chili Peppers were counting the days until the release of the new album. With former Van Halen alums, lead vocalist Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony being joined by Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, fans of hard driving Rock N Roll will be pleased to know the band is ready to tour the world in support of their self titled debut album. The bands first single "Oh Yeah" is already being embraced by radio as it's the #1 single on the Classic Rock charts and the #1 most added single in the mainstream rock charts and the bands first tour together sold out in a matter of minutes. The album also landed in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 upon its debut.
We caught up with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony to find out what the secret to the bands early success has been.
"It was completely crazy. About a year and a half ago, Sammy invited us three to come out to Las Vegas, he was doing a show there and do a little thing for The Encore. As soon as we got on stage it just clicked so well and the magic was there. You could just feel the audience and the intensity from the audience, it was just a special energy. Chemistry is everything. You could get the best players in the world and put them together and you don't necessarily have a good band. You could get some average players and put them together and have a great band. It's happened again and again and again. How many times have musicians said 'Oh man I can play better than those guys.' Yeah but you don't have the songs or the chemistry. We have not only great musicianship, we got great chemistry and I think that's the secret to Chickenfoot right there."
Chickenfoot have released the album exclusively through Best Buy and they celebrated the release with their fans during an autograph signing at a Los Angeles Best Buy, which brought out a huge number of fans wrapping around the store and even a few hardcore fans who camped out overnight to be first in line for the bands autograph signing. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony also talked about the amazing reaction of their fans and why it's so important for the band to have their fans support them in their new project.
"That's what it's all about, the fans. We just finished doing nine club shows across the U.S. here and the whole idea was just to get close to the fans and really get them into the band and everything. We needed to get to know our selves musically on stage and when you play a small place and it's an instant four minute sell out. Then the fans that get in are the ones that we really want their opinion and their response and their input during our show. It's just kind of an unspoken thing. When we play for those kind of fans, like those people that are out there camping, you get around them and learn a lot about yourself and about what we're doing and what they like and what you like and what you like about them and what they like about you and you just take that to a grander scale. The hardcores are the ones that really drive the whole thing. It's awesome."
Chickenfoot fans should keep an eye out for FMQB Productions’ radio special, inside Chickenfoot, which will air on radio stations nationwide on June 5th to 14. The band has tour dates booked in Europe beginning June 2th in Austria and extending until July 12th in The Netherlands. Chickenfoot will then head back to North America with dates beginning August 2nd in Canada and finishing up September 5th in Lake Tahoe, NV.

: Seriously, I dunno why people have such a big stick up their arse about chickenfoot. Is it because of the claiming to be bigger than Led Zeppelin thing? Do you feel like you're asserting your coolness when you try to come up with some clever way to insult it for being old school? It's a pretty nice blues boogie, with some sweet solos. It may not be the perfect blend of Satch and the others, but the parts are pretty good in themselves.
But the releasing only through Best Buy thing is a fail. Glad I could pick it up in Europe at Virgin.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 11:01 am / quote |

: It may not be the best album of the year, but it's way better than most albums from similar supergroups, considering the time this band was conceived and the album, I'd say it's a great achievement for these 4 icons, I personally love the album because of the tonal changes and musical variety but hey that's my personal view on Chickenfoot... : I'm not into straightforward hard rock, but Van Halen were something of a higher breed for sure, RHCP have always been one of those bands fans of any genre can love, and Satch is just ungodly with a guitar. I also don't buy into "supergroups" usually, who can cash in on their fame without having the originality or chemistry to back it up. I was impressed by their Late Show performance (off-topic, Conan is one of the best things to ever happen to television). I felt that they did have chemistry, the song was not amazingly creative but it was rocking and enjoyable, and Sammy Hagar sure is an engaging frontman. I'll have to check out the album.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 12:41 pm / quote |

: I don't understand the hate for this album. Overall it's very energetic, entertaining music. Plenty of soul, emotion, killer riffs. Everything you'd look for in a great hard rock album.
Odd that none of the negative comments have come with much justification; I guess this is the old "Ultimate-Guitar users hate anything which might be mainstream" problem.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 12:54 pm / quote |

Woah, you liked their late night performance?
Having seen them live and purchased their album, I can let you know that the late night performance was VERY tame in comparison. Not bad, but it didn't have the energy of them live in concert. I think you really will like the album.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 12:58 pm / quote |

: Does it disturb anyone else that their single is on the CLASSIC ROCK chart??? note the CLASSIC. How is something classic rock if it was released this year?
To be honest the album was a bit disappointing to me... too much jam-focused feel, so I couldn't really get into it. It'll be great for background music but it just can't keep my attention that well... but I'm glad they've had some success with it.
Also, the way Satriani performs on the album is not the same adaptation of his style as the way Slash performs with Velvet Revolver... it doesn't have his distinctive style (imo) as much, at least it doesn't shine through like Slash's does in VR.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 03:25 pm / quote |

Figures that they would have to be labeled immediately, just because the members have longevity in the industry. Makes no sense.
In regards to not having Joe's distinctive style. I kind of like that it's a bit different than his solo stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like Joe for almost all of his solo stuff, but I like that it's more of a whole band thing.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 03:36 pm / quote |

: Ignoring what these individuals have done before - largely because I haven't listen to much of Satriani's solo work, and I'm not much of a Van Halen fan - I have to admit that this is just a good album. The songs aren't overly heavy, but have a solid rock vibe to them while maintaining a certain joie de vivre - something that is seriously missing from a lot of modern rock.
There aren't any heavy-handed political statement, there aren't any "poor me" songs - its just a throwback to "I Can't Drive 55" and 5150, with a bit of a Chad Smith/Joe Satriani twist. I like it.

Ever heard of CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE? They pretty much y'know, suggest bands that are reminiscient of classic rock bands. For example, Wolfmother, but they are more like neo-classic rock.
Its their background that gives them the classic rock feel, and I have to admit, there are some true Rollings Stones & AC/DC moments in this album. Overall, a solid effort.
One of the best comments made about this album was "hey, who knew Mike Anthony could play bass?" He is AMAZING on this album, so much space and scope to move with, and his backing vocals are second to none! He truely comes into his element as a musician here.POSTED: 06/10/2009 - 06:58 pm / quote |

They clearly have no idea how to approach their craft, churning out recycled, bland rock riffs that are made worse with Satriana's over-indulgent leads. Hey, individuality their creative talents are much to be admired (for the most part), but this is clearly a half-assed bid for any kind of commercial/radio success. And they FAIL spectacularly.
