Cute Is What We Aim For have debuted at Number 21 on the Billboard 200 album chart with sales of 22,000 copies of Rotation. While in years past this may not have been an impressive total, but with a decimated music industry, insiders are saying it's respectable. The band has undergone a few line-up changes on bass and it now features Dave Melillo.
Shaant felt like the initial line-up of the band was a little rushed and hastily put together.
Cute Is What We Aim For On Rushing Line-Up
[Shaant] "We rushed. I think we signed our band too early. I think our line-up wasn't solidified. We forced ourselves into this, but just because the powers that be - we were so fortunate, we wouldn't trade it for the world - but if I could go back and do it again I would have picked individuals that wanted the exact same thing instead of forcing something to happen." [Jeff] "We pretty much just picked musicians that weren't in bands because everyone in the Buffalo scene when we started was already in a band so we were like, 'Alright, this kid isn't in a band, his band is going to break up so let's just kind of put alright this an [Shaant] "We really did, and that turned out to be a very bad idea."
We also asked him how he deals with the rotating members in the band.
Cute Is What We Aim For On Changing Members
[Shaant] "Well we make them do really weird things. That wasn't very funny. Hazing. How do you deal with it? Obviously when it's someone new and you don't get along, you deal with it pretty quickly. A lot can be said that we're in our formative years, and we're all very open to meeting new people almost. I know we're set in our ways, but not so much as if we're 35. We've only been together for three years, and we've known Dave since Day 1 basically of this band and he was on our first tour and six tours after that. So for him it's nothing." [Dave] "I still get hazed to this day. [Shaant] "He's not allowed to look us in the eyes."
After being a temporary replacement for Warped Tour last year we have confirmed that Dave will be the bass player in the band. Other bass players have included Don Arthur, Jack Martin, and Fred Cimato on two separate occasions.
