Dream Theater Drummer Hopes Metallica Makes Good CD |

One of the most anticipated albums of the year is Metallica's new effort Death Magnetic. The album is expected to be released in September of 2008, and the band just performed at Bonnaroo 2008 as well as several European Festivals.
It's hard to find heavy music artists that are not influenced by the metal foursome. Recently Dave Grohl cleared up misconceptions that he wrote an open letter to Metallica pleading them to make the next album good. He said he commented about them in an interview but didnt write a letter. Dream Theater are also fans of Metallica and we asked drummer Mike Portnoy about his expectations for the follow-up to St. Anger.
Watch video: Dream Theater Portnoy On New Metallica Expectations
"Well the new direction, who knows? Until the album comes out I have no idea what that direction is. St. Anger which took a beating from a lot of people, personally, I would take that album over Load and Reload any day of the week. You know it had its faults. It had its flaws. The production was weird and the vocal melodies were weird, but at least it had a spirit. At least they were attempting to get heavy again and play long songs again. The formula they used in the '90s with Load and Reload was not my cup of tea. It was way too polished, way too bluesy and straight ahead so St. Anger to me was a nice step in the better direction, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next one."
Metallica worked on the new album with Rick Rubin, and the first single is set to premiere as part of the Rock Band video game. Meanwhile, Dream Theater will take the summer off and then head into the studio to work on a new record. They'll also release a DVD of their performances from the recently completed Progressive Nation tour.

: THEORY: Metallica has been falling since the Black Album because they are not interested in metal anymore. From what I've read, the members of Metallica do not listen to metal. They're tastes have matured. With all due resepect to the genre, meatl is simply not a sustaining form of music. Even the so-called "fathers of metal" aren't driving around listening to metal. Theres no proof of that. It suits you to say that. Metallica have just always done what they what wanted to do, and theyve made that pretty clear on numerous occasions, and have never thought that they have to prove themselves to anybody. You should see some of their more recent live shows, the energy and vigour these guys still have playing stuff from kill em all is amazing. You cant fake that sort of performance to make people believe that youre still interested in that genre. Your atrocious spelling aside, I couldn't disagree with you more on this point you're trying to make. A genre that's been around for nearly 40 years is not something I'd call a "[non] sustaining form of music." In fact, metal is one of the very few genres you can find across the globe. Millions of musicians, promotors, venue staff, record label employees...etc make their living off metal and have (and will) for years, which sounds pretty sustainable to me. Genres evolve and expand over time, keeping (and more often than not creating) market trends for the populace to enjoy and buy into. You think you're going to hear your rock bands of today putting out an album that gets fans going "well this is a complete rip-off of Chuck Berry wtfz0rz"? No, because music evolves. If it didn't, it'd become stagnant and bland. People are allowed opinions, but don't try to pass off some ridiculous tripe like saying metal is not a sustainable genre.POSTED: 06/18/2008 - 04:19 pm / quote |

people who play rockband and guitar hero arent true fans of music so why should they get to hear the new metallica song first
i was wondering why this didnt piss more people off! i think it stupid to just release the single on rokband. not itunes? or the radio? EVERYONe is waiting for this album, not just 12 year olds |
they will release it on the radio too, they are just saying that they are releasing it on rock band because most singles arent released that way

VERY nice said. I've always had respect for Portnoy, and that gives me more respect to him. He is one of the few (that I've read/heard) that just says: "St.Anger" sucks.
I know that Death Magnetic will be a good album. It will not be better than Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets (which is AWESOME albums) but it will be a VERY good album. Metallica has a good vibe in the studio this time, and don't have that "dark shadow" over them. As Kirk said in one of the "Fly on the wall" videos on Misson:Metallica:
They were not actually a band last time, they were just a couple of guys working with each other. This time they are a band.
Something like that.. It's from Fly on the wall video June 16th.
And I can't wait to hold 'Death Magnetic' in my hands and put it in my cd player. The same with the new Dream Theater album (which I think will be released next year). I liked Systematic Chaos, and I have a feeling about that the next record will be better!POSTED: 06/18/2008 - 06:52 pm / quote |

And I'm not saying that they should've only played thrash, but don't sound like everything else, and eventually they started sounding too much the same where every goddamn song sounds alike. People are allowed opinions, but don't try to pass off some ridiculous tripe like saying metal is not a sustainable genre. | POSTED: 06/18/2008 - 08:23 pm / quote |

Don't say no con word about Friedman!!!
HAHAHa.
Seriously, Friedman isn't in Megadeth anymore because he wanted to push them more in a pop orientated direction. So he left when Mustaine wouldn't have it.
Also, I'd be careful about calling Metallica "the fathers of metal". Maybe the fathers of thrash metal, but not all metal. Not at all.

Metal has the same amount "sustainibility" as any other form of music. You just have to look for stuff outside of the mainstream media.POSTED: 06/18/2008 - 09:18 pm / quote |

I don't know, man. The way I see it is metal is really good when mixed with other genres, and a lot of creativity comes out of that. The only problem is (and it's not really a big one, except it gives metal a bum rap) people kind of stop considering it metal per se, and so people pass judgement on only one section of the genre and say it's too uniform and it's a musical dead end, and don't consider the part of the genre that is anything but.POSTED: 06/19/2008 - 03:32 am / quote |

Yes they have, listen to Risk. It took a completely "pop" direction (not because of Marty, but because of the record company).
It's nice to think bands like DT see Metallica as "polished", etc. Really writing a song by DT is a hell of a lot more difficult than making thrash imo, but I guess they can really appreciate the band, as they can see the effort they're making and not the technical stuff, as many seem to see.POSTED: 06/19/2008 - 05:40 am / quote |
