Mike Patton, currently fronting Mondo Cane and about four other different bands, made his mark in the late '80s, early '90s fronting Faith No More. It was the band's, The Real Thing, that created the funk-metal craze, opened the door for the Red Hot Chili Peppers brand of funk-rock, and tipped off what would become the Nu-metal revolution. Bands as diverse as Korn, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones benefitted from their groundbreaking work, with songs like "Epic" and "From Out Of Nowhere." Throw in Nirvana, and the Alternative revolution was born.
We spoke to Mike Patton and asked him if he thought The Real Thing would be as influential to music as any album in the last 20 years.
Patton On If He Realizes Real Thing Influence
"No, but it's not my place to criticize. I just make the music and put it out there. Where it fits in the world, how important it is, how important it isn't is up to people like you. I have nothing to say about it."
We asked Patton how he remembered his days with Faith No More.
Mike Patton On How He Looks Upon Faith No More
"Fondly. They were good years. It was a decade of my life. It was lots of ups and lots of downs, but ultimately that's where I learned my chops and learned the craft and the business."
So, with the album celebrating 20 years next year is there a possibility of getting back together with the Faith No More guys?
Mike Patton On Faith No More Reunion
"I wouldn't rule it out. I don't think we would need to reform the band, but maybe there's other things we can do together."
Faith No More broke up in 1998. Patton recently has gotten movie soundtrack work. His most recent role was making the gruesome monster noises of the creatures in I Am Legend.

It would be cool to hear more from these guys.

: okay the new chilis stuff has lost most of the classic funk sound that they had, but if you listen to their 1st four albums (self titled, freaky styley, uplift, and mothers milk) that is some awesome funk/rap rock whatver you want to call it. They're 'overrated' because they're all over the radio from stadium arcadium still (at least in the NY area) and evryone claims to be a fan but really don't know anything past the new album.POSTED: 01/18/2008 - 07:27 pm / quote |
RoshanC
: I used to like the chilis, and own every album but i find their new stuff bland and generic. I agree that the earlier stuff, especially freaky styley, is definitely the most interesting, because they were covering new ground and exploring. I also like One Hot Minute, which is underrated and had a great mixture of herd rock and funk. It was the chili's last funky album, and they seem to have abandoned the funk for a mainstream generic rock sound, with little experimentation, even on a double album, which was incredibly disappointingPOSTED: 01/18/2008 - 07:41 pm / quote |

: ha love3 faith no more, but i thought throughout their entire career each band member absolutely hated each other and got into fights with one another. oh well, i guess its good news im guessing if they do come back together it'll be a comeback tour not a new album or anything, my fingers will be crossed for them to come to australia POSTED: 01/18/2008 - 08:18 pm / quote |

: Man I hate articles like this. A member of a band says something like "I wouldn't rule out a reunion" or "yeah it would be great if we got back together sometime." But that doesn't mean that there's any plans in place to do anything. And with Patton's personality and business sense, I don't think it would happen at all.
But in saying that, I love FNM and would love the see them reform POSTED: 01/18/2008 - 08:30 pm / quote |

: I would be a much bigger fan of Mike Patton if he wasn't such an elitist douche. I really liked all of the Fantomas records, Mr. Bungle stuff and the new Peeping Tom record, but then I saw the video of him ripping on Wolfmother at some festival so now there's that nagging voice in the back of my head reminding me that it would be a lot cooler if he just kept his mouth shut.
I know a lot of people hate Wolfmother, I don't really care. Being a musical elitist isn't going to change my opinion, so please, just don't listen to it and keep your thoughts to yourself.POSTED: 01/20/2008 - 10:41 am / quote |
