Katy Perry is causing quite a stir with her song Ur So Gay. The full lyric that spawned the title is "Ur So Gay and you dont even like boys." The clever songstress has a viral hit with the song, which will be on her forthcoming album, but fans can pick it up on her EP titled after the witty song.
Perry, who critics are claiming to be the antithesis to Avril Lavigne, talks about the inspiration for "Ur So Gay."
Katy Perry On Covering The Outfield
"It's about those guys that wear the guyliner and use the flat-irons, and wear my jeans. I want to wear my jeans. Don't wear my jeans. ...or spend more time in the mirror than their girlfriends do. And I wrote it after being dumped. It was one of those relationships where the dumpage lasted longer than the actual relationship, unfortunately, and I just remember after finally, it was the last straw, like, kicking me out of the apartment and not coming back. I went back to my house, and I was a little upset. And I remember my roommate...I had this verse that I had been developing in my head, and I played it to her, and I was like, 'I don't know what to say in the chorus, he's just like so gay,' and she's like, 'Say that.' I'm like, 'OK. I'll say that!' It's taking the piss out of that emo scene."
On the EP Perry also puts her own spin to the classic hit by The Outfield, "Use Your Love." Perry talked about covering the tune, which is by far one of the best covers we've heard in a while.
Katy Perry On Ur So Gay
"You know, I am a fan, most definitely. That's why I did the song. I think I was inspired to do that just because literally I was out at a club one night and I saw a group of girls with their drinks, and then all of the sudden that song came on and they were like, 'I gotta put my drink down. This is my song.' And they all went on the dance floor, and they all just started dancing, and I was like, 'I want that same feeling.' Also, the EP called for a cover, and so I thought, 'Let's just do this, and make everybody have a good moment and remember.' It's weird. You get 'Your Love,' and it's always followed by 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey, and you know those girls are drunk on the floor and going, 'Yeahhhhh' I always sit both of those out and just watch the girls just go nuts. It's pretty exciting."
After returning from South By Southwest Perry is finishing up the forthcoming album, in stores this summer, and preparing for her appearance on the Warped Tour.
