Les Paul Dies At 94

Les Paul, the acclaimed guitar player and inventor of the Les Paul, passed away on Thursday, August 13, at a hospital in White Plains, New York from complications of sever pneumonia.

He was a robust 94 years old. In recent years Paul played twice weekly at the Iridium Jazz Club with a non-stop calvacade of rock legends including Paul McCartney, Slash, Dickie Betts, Zakk Wylde, Brian May, Joe Satriani and others.

He was born on June 9, 1915 and was already performing publicly as a honky-tonk guitarist at the young age of 13.

He created the solid body Les Paul after years of innovation in the 1950s and now guitarists from Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, to Slash to Tom Morello all sing its praises.

Guitarist extraordinaire Joe Satriani, who is currently on tour with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith in Chickenfoot, got on the phone to talk about Les.

We asked him when and where he was when he heard the news.

"I was sitting in a Starbucks with Chad Smith and we were doing some stuff on Twitter, and it popped up. We started to see people leaving messages about his passing. I wasn't aware that he had pneumonia again, so it was sort of a shock to me, completely, you know."

Satriani, who is perhaps one of the most influential guitarists of this era and taught the likes of Kirk Hammett of Metallica, former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, and Steve Vai, said that Les Paul was more than an inventor of a guitar.

"To meet him was to learn how to be a good human being first and foremost. He ws just this fantastic person and when you spend time with him, hopefully some of that would rub off on you. As a musician of course his contributions to guitar playing and to music were just staggering. He was our first real guitar hero. He was one of those flashy guitar players who could back it up with solid musicianship. He invented multi-track recording. He invented the idea of pirate radio. He operated a station out of his apartment in New York City. He was the first guy to get the solid body guitar right. All the while he was doing this he was a fantastic entertainer, guitar player, and his career was just incredible."

Former Guns N' Roses and current Velvet Revolver and solo guitarist Slash said in a statement: "Les Paul was a shining example of how full one's life can be. He accomplished so much, & was so vibrant & full of positive energy. I'm honored & humbled to have known & played with him over the years, he was an exceptionally brilliant man, musician, inventor, mentor & friend."

Keith Richards: "Les Paul, along with Leo Fender, the most important developer of the electric guitar. He actually taught himself to play guitar in order to demonstrate his electronic theories. Wow!! All of us owe an unimaginable debt to his work and his talent. Mary Ford didn’t hurt either."

Joan Jett: "He was a genius inventor, musical innovator, and a wonderful person. Without the advances he pioneered, the recording sciences and the electric guitar would have been left years behind. I will miss him so much."

Dave Navarro: "Les is single handedly responsible for the direction and evolution of the modern rock movement. Period. If you are a fan of modern music, you owe Les Paul an enormous Thank You!"

Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: "Without Les Paul, we would not have rock and roll as we know it. His inventions created the infrastructure for the music and his playing style will ripple through generations. He was truly an architect of rock and roll."

Joe Chambers, founder of the Musicians Hall of Fame based in Nashville: "It’s kinda heavy, but it just felt good in your hands. The electronics that Gibson developed that went into it later just gave it a sound and a feel that is unparalleled."

Les Paul has become the only individual to share membership into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame. And one thing is for certain: Les Paul is responsible for changing the way rock & roll sounds and he will be greatly missed.

A private ceremony is being held for him in New York, and a service in his hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin and a public memorial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family urges wellwishers to donate to the Les Paul Foundation, 236 West 30th Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.

The solidbody is something which is primarely on the background in popmusic, the singer is on the forefront, therefore they get more attention.

Truly an incredible man, and possibly the greatest modern inventor. Music would never have developed the way it has without hims. I went to his 90th birthday celebration a few years ago where many great artists performed. He ended up not being able to come because he had gotten pneumonia then too. as right as some of you are about the lack of coverage on his death, why turn it into a negative subject? I agree he should get more recognition but at the same time, only people who truly appreciate guitar and the instrument itself that he perfected so well can understand what a loss this is. Les Paul was all about the music. At one point in his life, he was making 1,000 bucks a week playing country music, but he decided to make literally 20 bucks a month playing jazz. RIP Les Paul, he doesn't get as much recognition from the media as he deserved (Rolling Stone put him as the 47th best guitarist of all time, even though he invented the freaking instrument), but if you have even LISTENED to music, you should appreciate what he has do in his life.

I heard the news yesterday evening and if I'm honest, I wasn't surprised yet it still felt like a kick in the teeth.I never listened to any of Les Paul's work sadly however his guitar was one of my all time favourites. I remember seeing it when I was younger and falling in love with it instantly. I guess that's where my love for listening and playing music started from really. Music to me now will always feel like something is missing since his death. A true gentleman and a superb musician who had my utmost respect. Thank you. Rest in peace.

Did a speech about guitars in college and one of the things I stumbled onto when researching was this guys achievements. I never knew he had so much to do with revolutionizing the music industry in general (with his innovation in multitrack recording). He built an electric guitar using only an acoustic guitar with a needle of a phongraph poked through it, he built a quality studio that would've cost him $3000 for only $130, he invented the multi-track recording, he played guitar while playing harmonica, he discovered the D7 chord in the key of C ("The Lost Chord"), earned $265 a week when he was only 17, and was one of the first to use some sort of picking device to play guitar. The man was a literal genius...and to think his piano teacher sent his mother this letter;

"Dear Mrs. Polfus. Your boy, Lester, will never learn music, so save your money. lease dont' send him for any more piano lessons."

I love the Les Paul guitar and Les Paul's remake of How High The Moon, but he didn't invent the Les Paul Guitar. Ted McCarty is the true creator of the Les Paul. They just slapped Les' name on the headstock so it could compete with Fender. They needed a big name, so they used his. The only contributions were the trapeze tailpiece and the fitting of the maple cap over the mahogany body.

I just found out yesterday that Les Paul passed away. I read it in a tiny article in the previous day's newspaper I found in the airport. I am so dissapppointed with the media. He deserves more than this.

What he acheived during his lifetime is something incredible. To be 94 and yet still be playing guitar and live gigs until the end. A true musician who inspired and will hopefully inspire generations of musicians to come. Whose name should not be forgotten.

From all those about to rock, we salute you.

Michael Jackson, he's great and all but come on. When is Les going to get his own magazine about his life achievements? He didn't only evolve one musical instrument with the electric guitar. He revolutionized music as a whole with the invention of multi-track recording as well as tape delay and phasing effects. A true genius of his time.

you know what? I'm glad he's not getting the attention that Michael Jackson got. Cause common, that's not who Les was. Les was a true man, he didn't care about publicity or money or any of that stuff. He wasn't an attention craving child like Michael.

Les went out the way he would have wanted. He will be remembered how he would have wanted, personally and privately by some, but he has affected everyone, and I think that was enough for him. To affect people, not to necessarily be remembered because of it.
