Linkin Park Explain Away Delays

One of the big disappointments for 2006 was the failure of Linkin Park to release their new studio album. The band had a lot of ideas and has had trouble paring the album down.

Linkin Park is working with Rick Rubin, and as is his forte, he forces the bands he works with to come up with only the best. Mike Shinoda explained the delay.

"We wanted to have it out sooner. Our fans know that. We're really taking our time. The ideas are coming, but we really wanted the best for us and our fans, so it's not quite done. We've had about 100 ideas, and we've been narrowing it down, and narrowing it down and it's about 17 at this point. I figure it'll be less than that when it comes out."

Linkin Park said that one of the reasons they're taking so long is that they want to make sure that any of their songs could be picked as a single and that there's no filler.

[Mike Shinoda] "You pick up some records and you wanna, like, you really like some songs and you really don't like some songs -- that may be true for our records, I don't know -- but for us when we listen to our records, we want to listen to it and like every song so it's hard to pick a single when you like all the songs." [Bassist Phoenix] "Not only that, we actually... When Hybrid Theory first came out we used to think that we would be really good at picking singles, and we learned very quickly that the record company does that because they're way better at it. For us, now we're just going to be like, 'You guys pick the singles. That's not what we're here to do. You know what works best in your world and we'll just try and write music.'"

Fans who want to know a little bit more of what Linkin Park has been going through in the studio can pick up the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, which hits newsstands November 16. The band also has some goodies for fans still interested in joining the fanclub, Linkin Park Underground for this year, and they promise great stuff for 2007 membership as well.

Linkin Park is good. I think Hybrid Theory iw their best cd yet but thats just me. I hope the new album returns them to that grungier harder sound they had on HT. I know I'll pick up their next cd and support them. A great band with members who are good people.

The bottom line is music is music - if you like it, cool - if not, that's fine too. Why can't everyone just understand that? It isn't complex. Would you bash on someone at a restaurant for eating steak just because you don't like how it tastes? It's ridiculous -

On to the matter at hand - Linkin Park said in one of their previous interviews that the 'nu-metal' was pulled out of their sound and they went for more of a punk-ish vibe. That will suck, if I may say so. Oh well - Guess we'll have to see.

Like a lot of other people here have said, I kinda drifted away from listening to LP as I grew up, but have to say I remember listening to Hybrid Theory every single day when I got home from school. Such a catchy album with some really great songs. Im looking forward to their new stuff, hopefully they will return to form

Wait, i still am a teenager. Lets put it this way, when you first hear them their the best band alive, but after a while they start getting old and boring. Its like that for most people actually, with most bands. Hybrid Theory Was good, Reanimation was cool, some nice mixing. Linkin Park Vs. JZ pissed me off, it just didnt work, and Meteora was ok. There are a few songs that worked well. But in general they arent reallya good band in my opinion. But ill still listen to the new album and hope its for the best.

I like LP as driving music. I think if they are going to be taking this much time on the album it will come out great and meet or surpass the standards of Hybrid Theory.

Hmmm i agree craigo linkin park is a great band to get you into music. But eventually me and most of the people i've seen have moved on to what i consider better bands. And nathan i don't know anyone that doesnt listen to linkin park because it's "cool" thats stupid in my opinon. I still listen to them sometimes but i don't like them as much. however i am looking forward to this new sound that they claim to have.

The problem I have with this is how he says they "became old." when in fact its the listener who makes the music old. Recorded music is timeless. Sure, the music has stopped being played over and over on the radio, but it's still as good as it was the first listen, and always will be. Anything before meteora was good... In my opinion.
If you lot can, check out some of the stuff before hybrid theory... yes, there was LP before hybrid theory.

not really too excited about the new LP release, but i am a little interested to hear what kind of new sound they'll have and i do agree with the poster who said it was cool to have good guys making music. Linkin park would probably be more listenable if they hadn't been so horribly overplayed.
One last thing, the article says "one of the big disappointments of 2006". Not true, i don't know anyone who was disappointed.

Their still good, they do take to long to release cd's, and it does cause them to loose alot of fans. they should think of atleast making a cd every year and a half, to keep their fanbase.

I heard that the real reason it's taking so long is because it's taking months just to mix the vocals. You see, Rubin was quoted as saying that "the computer that sang on the previous albums totally crashed, so we had to try and let Bennington actually sing on this album. Yeah, it didn't work. We just thought that the whiny PMSing wouldn't be the best thing for the album. So we've ordered a newer and more powerful computer that should suffice for the vocals on this album. The computer should be in any day, and the delay will be over."

This is great news, linkin park is a pretty nice band, even if u dont focus on the guitar, and the catchy riffs, focus on their lyrics cuz those will get you.

i think what i have to say may speak for many people..

LP used to be a band i liked alot.. But now its just another band.. Thats only cos they were one of the first bands to get me started on liking rock music.. But of course, bands such as mars volta and mastodon soon took me by the neck and plunged me deeper into music till i saw LP as really just another band when i put them side by side with the bands i listen to now.. It may well rest in the hands of personal opinion.. And this is mine..

I just think they no longer hold a place in my heart as a good band, dare i even say i think they're music now bores me.. but bands need to do what they have to do.. And different bands cater to different people, so i guess LP was never really meant for me..

As a fan of music, i just hope this album would be good, at least it'll introduce or re-introduce people to rock music.. I'll definately give it a few spins.. Maybe catch me back as a LP fan..

Decent band. As far as content goes, the majority of it is mainly related. On another note, bands these days do take way too long to get an album out. I understand they want the best and Rubin is a very demanding producer, for which he is known as being amazing. But I don't agree with the glamming up of songs over and over again. Enough is enough. I think Jimmy Page said it best when he thought an album should be made in a short period of time or it grows old and you become bored with it.

Ive said it many times before. But even though ive moved on from LP, they were the ones who took me from mainstream music to metal so ill always love them for that.

Main reason ive moved on from LP was because i drew bored of their songs. Hopefully this new CD will re-ignite my interest in them....for a time anyway.

i wouldnt say they are the best band in the world, they are not even the most talented musicians, but they are ok. their music is very comercial and can lead to some of their music being made soley for radio. will be interesting to hear the new stuff, see what direction they went in

The Jay Z thing was appalling, but I still like Linkin Park even though I've grown out of this style, I was listening to Meteora all the time when it first came out. I saw them live once and it was awesome. I hope this record is going to be a good one.

Ya, that wouldn't work. It wasn't a continuation by any means. HT was based around anger and rebellion, whereas Meteora was based around depression and apathy. Those two don't exactly stack up...
