hey I play a seven string. 7 string has nothing to do with the style of music. I play this style. if your in standard tuning...the seventh string is B...so its not much heavier.

OTHER THAN THAT. Metallica will take over the world soon. (wishful thinking) and i think theyve made amends with napster considering they dont care that people streamed their music before it came out or downloaded it. LONG LIVE METALLICA

Not true. On St. Anger he played one or two songs on an LTD F series seven string.

I think I'm going to like "Shogun" more than this, so that'll probably be my favorite for September. Still a good album by Metallica. James really can't sing anymore. He sounds good in some spots, but is lacking for the most part. Very poor sound quality. I know they were going for an 80's sound, but honestly, if they re-released ...AJFA with the same production as the Black Album, you'd buy it again.

Death Magnetic may not be their best album but it still rocks. I know james singing isnt as good as it use to be but when has james even been a good singer? All in all Im glad metallica didnt disappoint and I have high hopes they will release another killer album in the near future.

I actually hope they play some of their newer songs on this tour their doing.

I guess that the album was generally over-hyped, and it's indeed sad, however anticipated, that not everyone will be satisfied with it. I, myself, think that Death Magnetic is pretty mediocre, and Kirk really lost his magic. It's just not a good piece of music, is it Metallica or not.

Sorry for the double post.

I gotta say I think Unforgiven III is a really great song after a few listens. Like a lot of songs on this album it kinda has to grow on you. Yes, it doesn't thrash and kick your ass like the other songs but the albums gotta have some dimension to it (don't want another St. Anger eh?) And as for it not being apart of the trilogy, I again have to disagree. The lyrics James wrote for this song continue the story he started on the Black Album with The Unforgiven and Reload's Unforigven II. Next to Judas Kiss, these could be some of the best lyrics on the album. James has that ability to make one line sound so epic, "How can I be lost, if I don't know where to go." It's so laid out and simple but so powerful. That's the Metallica I love.

POSTED: 09/16/2008 - 01:25 pm / quote |
DunnyExplorer :
Metallica did not "sell out" on Load and Reload - they merely stretched their wings in a different musical direction. As a musician (I use the term loosely!) I can fully appreciate why they recorded these albums - to try and keep themselves fresh - without these albums the band may very well have imploded. I have to admit that I don't really care for either album (I think there is probably a good 6 song EP from the songs on both records) but then again I don't think the songs on St Anger are that bad - its just the production that stiffles it and this probably puts me at odds with most peoples views.

However, Death Magnetic is a true return to form as far as I'm concerned - don't think there is a bad song on it. Loved it from the first listen.

I personally love Metallica as musicians I think whatever they do, they do for a reason (reference to Kirk's comment on choosing not to)
they can turn crap into gold by looking at it. I daresay they could do a song with MCR and make them look good.....nevermind I take that back. but anyway Death Magnetic does not have a bad song on it and I include the unfogiven three on the basis that it is bad only compared to the other two. I put this album on my mp3 player behind my and justice for all playlists and master of puppets and kill em all and ride the lightning...basically the first 4 albums and I felt like it was just an extention of the first 4. The black album didn't sound much like the others even though (it is disputed) that their best song ever is on that album. personally master of puppets may be equal to sandman..i don't know cause I love all songs that Metallica puts out including St. Anger. Maybe thats just me but Metallica never lost it they always had it...using the term "it" loosely being different talents of songwriting and guitar skill and going from the black album on back, to load and reload takes alot of talent to completely change your sound like that. Some bands can't even find that "Sound". Yet to change it completely and still sound awesome is beyond me. Metallica is just amazing. Like them or not no opinion, may it be good or bad, biased or unbiased, or just overanalyzing in every way will never change the fact that Metallica IS Metallica and it will always be that way.

MasterStafy - I think we are reading from the same page my friend. What I am trying to say is that whatever any band does, they do for a reason, especially when you become as big as Metallica. They never lost their ability as musicians and they never lost their ability to write songs - they merely ventured in to areas that didn't sit well with certain parts of their audience. I personally think "Master of Puppets" is the greatest metal album of all time but Death Magnetic at the moment puts a warm smile on my face when I listen to it - I think it is that good. I have been an avid fan since 1983 when I bought "Kill 'em All" and saw the band in London in 1984 at the Lycem Ballroom (after their 1983 tour with The Rods was cancelled.....due to poor ticket sales!) and they have never "lost" it - they merely recorded some songs that I personally did not think were as good as their previous output. Then again, when your previous output is as strong as theirs, they will always struggle in some peoples eyes. Lets have the UK tour dates announced - cant wait to see the boys live again.

+1,000... I agree. I own all their albums, and love them all. Yes, even Load and Reload to all the poser fans out there. Load's in my top 5 favorite of theirs too. St. Anger wasn't great, and it certainly wasn't "Metallica" good, but it was still a good album compared to other crap out there. They could've just tuned the snare and put solos in, but that's Bob Rock's fault (If you've seen "Some Kind of Monster" you'll know Hammett protested the idea of a no solo album so they wouldn't become "trendy"). As for this album, I love it. "The End of the Line" and "The Judas Kiss" are my favorite's on it, and I even love "The Unforgiven III"... very different from the previous two.

Great album. Best songs were definitely "That Was Just Your Life", the end heavy part of "The Day that never comes", "All Nightmare Long", and "My Apocolypse". Only 2 complaints...
1. I wish there had been a more diverse amount of speed on the album. it was either their higher tempo-kind of songs, which is awesome, of course, or their super slow ballads. I just wanted to hear a super-heavy chugger. Songs are for the most part awesome though.
2. I wish I could hear the bass a tiny bit more. I love loud drum mixes, but it was almost excessive.

It was amazing beside that...

After being disappointed after buying the "Black album" when it came out I have never bought another since until last Friday. This new album is great The end of the line is a great song. In fact they are all great songs. Why people think james voice sounds bad is beyond me? I think he sings better this way then when he was trying to sing he cant sing he is thrash he has to yell listen to no life(and black-st. anger) then listen to KEA, RTL,MOP,AJFA he cant sing. This album makes me very happy I was 9 when i first heard metallica or any heavy thrash for that matter I have been hooked since I'm now 32. Thank you MetallicA!!!

well ok lets think, he was singing in his 20's back when thrash was just starting and didnt have a traditional sound. his voice wasnt that trained...and if you listen to no life til leather his voice sounded like he was a kid compared to know. It was the fact that metallica was so raw that made them the kings of thrash. well...them and testament. testament is called the godfathers of thrash..but anyway the black album was shure as heck not bad so please spare me the idiocracy.

Since ONE James has tried too hard to sing he cannot sing in key thats a simple fact he has to yell to sound like james hence listen to the first 4. and IMHO since one was a hit mr. rock wanted to milk the success for all it was worth. Like i said I love this album Rob adds a groove that metallica has been lackin since the death of Cliff.

This album is prob good enough plus being at #1 to cause mustane to relapse lol.

It was only okay to me, but at least they did better that St. Anger... I was almost ashamed of being a Metallica fan with that one... Also, they could've picked a better song to make as a single than "The Day That Never Comes"... Also, I was stoned out of my mind when I was listening to the album on the radio, so, the opinion I had may be a little disqualified... So, yeah... Later...
