Mudvayne Rises From Slipknot Shadow

Mudvayne was managed by the same people as Slipknot, and Iowa's masked marauders are largely credited with giving them their first big breaks. The band relied heavily on the visuals as do Slipknot, and found that there was much crossover between fans of the two. With Lost And Found, their last album, they toned down their image and the visuals that some were starting to define them by.

Mudvayne continued to experiment with make-up, and still do, but vocalist Chad Gray said that they started to feel trapped by their masks and their link to Slipknot.

"All of the sudden it became that is what we had to do, and that's when it was like, 'No wonder people are making the comparisons to Slipknot and stuff like that,' even though we're sonically different. We are wearing a mask every day. If you put the exact same make-up on, it's just semantics. It's the same thing. We're wearing a make-up mask instead of mask. As much as we love those guys and appreciate everything they've done, we wanted to draw away from that. We wanted to be able to have our own wings and to do our own thing, and we did. Like I said, I'm very thankful for what they did for us because they basically put the stamp of approval on us. If they would have hated us, a lot of people would have probably been like, 'Oh, screw them,' but they like the band so it's cool."

Gray and drummer Matt McDonough said that they will still don make-up, however they leave it up to each member, and its not a universal choice. Mudvayne's new single is "Do What You Do," and their new album The New Game is set for release November 18.

I liked the guitarist in the Dig video with the horns sticking out of his face. That was rad. But the boiler suit he wore? Come on, they can't be at all surprised about the Slipknot comparisons (not that I'm saying they are).

The Slipknot connection will always be there, and they know that. They're a good band regardless of who they're associated with. I wouldn't mind my band being associated with Slipknot one bit.

Mudvayne's first cd was imo the best L.D.50, the End of all things to come was alright, i over listened to it and i didn't get into Lost and found. I'll probably pass on their new cd.

All Hope Is Gone is Slipknot's heaviest material to date. And yes, I've listened to all the albums - in fact, it's the only one of theirs I like - I hated them before this album.

As far as mudvayne getting 'wearker heaviness wise' - there's more to music than heaviness. I agree that, personally, I like LD 50 much more than Lost and Found, but they're both good albums for different reasons. If I wanna hear LD 50, I'll put it in. I dont need four of the same album.

I like Mudvayne better than Slipknot because Mudvayne is a lot heavier than Slipknot. Mudvayne should be credited for there work.

I would listen to both Mudvayne and the Knot if they did or did not wear make-up and/or masks. Neither band has released a bad album IMHO. Both are technically proficient and melodical, whilst staying heavy as hell. I have never associated the two together, I believe they are two totally different entities visually and sonically.(but I liked the alien make-up costume mudvayne used during the EOATTC era)

I think in the studion thier okay, but thier singer REALLY needs coaching on holding his breath, he cant hardly say half his vocals(look at dig at Big Day Out, good god), but corey taylor had the same problems. I just wish slipknot rapped again, made them sound unique.

some of the songs on All hope is gone are heavier than anything theyve done, but albumwise, Iowa is heavier. Still a great album tho.

I listened to Mudvayne before Slipknot, cos they both spawned on to the circuit at the same time. I heard Dig first, then the Wait and Bleed live video with the studio song over the top (i hated the clay version, it had no screaming O_O). I used to love Mudvayne, and tbh I'd associate them more with GWAR than Slipknot, well maybe not, but I was only 12 I believe?

Honestly, i think mudvayne HAS changed styles. they have come a long way from the math metal roots we knew with The Beginning of All Things to End.... they still have those roots in their music, but they have just progressed as musicians, and personally I enjoyed Lost and Found. Quite a sound album actually. If you dont like their new stuff throw in your LD 50 album and listen to that. Seriously, how come everyone complains when a band gets "less heavy" Fuck... metallica went less heavy for YEARS and yet people still bought their shit....

I sorta like Mudvayne. To me, the song Determined(from Lost and Found) is much heavier than any Slipknot that Ive heard. And so many bands get watered-down over time, but its just musical evolution. Most bands and fans dont want 6 albums that sound the same. It has worked before, but generally, its not good.

to be honest this is the first time that ive ever heard people comparing them to Slipknot because of the make-up, I never really saw any similarities or comparisons. I still rate Mudvayne's music though, their bass player has some killer chops, the drummer is pretty awesome too.

Funny, i'm not interested in mudvayne at all anymore but they were probably one of the most formative bands for me as a kid. When i was 12 or 13 i was probably still listening to the Backstreet Boys, but i was also listening to Death Blooms! lol

Of course the bands have gotten weaker. Its part of the new metalcore trend. People prefer bands like FFDP and KSE so much more nowadays over the heavy thrash metal like Slipknot that bands have to go alittle softer to stay with the time. I find it very unfortunate, cause i prefer the heavier bands over the metalcore ones.

i saw mudvayne back in the day when the first album was out and they played with one minute silence in the uk and i said to the singer at the time backstage that you guys are way better than slipknot and both there albums where out at the same time and he looked shocked in away. slipknot suck balls!! but not herd mudvayne in years think ill give em a listen again
