Norma Jean are releasing their new album, The Anti Mother, today, August 5. The album is the follow-up to 2006's Redeemer, and they once again teamed with Ross Robinson for the effort.
Norma Jean is currently touring on Warped, and we asked Cory and Chris from the band about the new record.
" With the new record, which is called The Anti Mother and it comes out August 5, is we really didn't know what we were going to do when we started writing this record. I kind of remember us just going in and getting in the studio, in our practice rehearsal space, going 'OK, what do we got?' and what came out is that record. We want to progress we want to change. We don't want to do the same record over and over."
Norma Jean also said theyre a little reluctant to play too much new material on Warped.
"Yeah, I... There is kind of a hesitancy. We definitely want to play new songs, but coming from a fans perspective if I go see a band there are songs I want to hear, just like everybody else. I want to hear those songs, and I can't wait to hear them. And when the play something new, it's not like I'm not into it. I just don't know it so it's not as fun. We play one song that's new right now. Everything else is old and then when the record comes out, and it'll be out for a couple of months, we'll do a headlining tour this fall and we'll throw a lot more new stuff in there."
The Anti-Mother features guest appearances by Helmet's Page Hamilton on "Opposite Of Left And Wrong" and the Deftones's Chino Moreno on "Surrender Your Sons." Other standouts include "Vipers, Snakes and Actors" and "Death Of The Anti Mother."

: I actually really like this album, its quite interesting. I was never really into them until I saw them live w/ btbam and they put on a pretty energetic and wicked good show.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 10:08 am / quote |

: I really like the CD. Sure it's not Bless the Martyr or O' God, but it has it's own flare. There's gonna be some bashing of the clean vocals, but personally I think they work great. Awesome release, can't wait for them to come around again, their set at warped was stellar.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 10:35 am / quote |

: This is an amazing record. It progresses just like they say it does, but it still has the classic Norma Jean, in-your-face hardcore on songs like "The Birth of the Anti-Mother". I don't know why they hesitate to play the new stuff live though. In Orlando they played "Robots 3 Humans 0" and sounded pretty sweet and the crowd was extremely responsive to it.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 11:43 am / quote |

: I actually kinda like the clean vocals.
What I can't stand is the the addition of Page Hamilton's vocals.
It's interesting, but I really think I lose a lot of the energy of the song when he does his thing.
I like the record though. I think I still like Redeemer better, but this one is still pretty good.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 01:22 pm / quote |

: The Anti-Mother sounds pretty sweet,I think the clean vocals in Robots 3 Humans 0 kinda draws in a less hardcore crowd... and the rest of the album is like some older stuff, like Vipers Snakes and Actors reminds me of Memphis and Grand Scene.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 05:18 pm / quote |

: I missed them at this years warped tour (didn't find the venue in time to see their set). I love all their stuff from Bless the Martyr to Redeemer and was looking forward to the new album. I love the clean vocals and the album overall kicks ass. My only gripe would be that sometimes I feel that they re-use some riffs here and there from past albums but they tend to make up for it by creating overlapping riffs and melodies that really make good atmospheres and textures. Like I said, overall the album kicks ass and I am pretty pissed that I missed their set.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 08:54 pm / quote |

: Lawl, these comments are terrible.
I think it's funny that some kids are like, "man, i liked O God, and Bless the Martyr it's crazy hardcore and original"
No it's not, they just ripped off Botch and Coalesce, and were marketed to the Warped Tour Crowd, cus they had more lame singing parts. Not that i don't like singing but some of their chorus stuff is boring as hell, or when they have slower parts, it's the same generic stuff you hear from a lot of younger bands in that style.
Anyway, i have yet to hear this, so i won't say anything about the new album, but hopefully it's better than their last few, so i can at least tolerate the praises i hear given to them. Haha.POSTED: 08/05/2008 - 10:56 pm / quote |

: I am really loving this album! It's definitely not as heavy and dirty-sounding as their previous album, but it's quite enjoyable.
I think that they were able to tone down the aspects of their previous albums that people were turned off by while still retaining that Norma Jean sound. They added a little more catchiness to their songs, but the songs are still pretty heavy.
My favorite one is "Robots 3 Humans 0".POSTED: 08/06/2008 - 12:37 am / quote |

: its not the clean vocals i'm against. its the complete and utter abandonment of the botch influence that made their last records so fun to listen to. nj were never a botch ripoff band, but you could always hear the influence. now that they've gone and killed that, i don't think i'll find myself listening to future releases.POSTED: 08/06/2008 - 02:15 am / quote |
Dirrty_J-Dub
: wow... you guys cant agree on sheeeit...
how about all of you widen your variety of music you listen to so that you can appreciate all types of music and the little things that make them unique... instead of comparing the bands to other cd's and other bands just look at the way each band plays and their way they portray the style of music that they want fee their music or dont feel their music. if it has eotions, in any way shape or form, than its music to me. its not about how heavy the chugs are or how technical the band can make their music sound.
DONT HATE, APPRECIATE!!
