Slipknot Debuts At Number One After Historic Recount

Slipknot has topped the Billboard 200 with their new album, All Hope Is Gone. It was neck and neck with rapper The Game, but it eventually came out on top. All hope was not gone as it was initially tabulated that The Game was Number One, by 13 copies, but Roadrunner Records asked for a recount and came out on top by at least 1000.

While Slipknot had expectations to meet at Roadrunner Records, we asked percussionist Chris if he felt pressure from the fans to follow-up previous successes.

"No, because we do it for ourselves first. I mean, and that's the biggest critics in the world is us nine. So, that is such an insane process that we don't worry about what the rest of the world thinks because we're in there creating. And we know what we like. We know what sounds good. Slipknot recently completed their stint as headliners on the Mayhem Festival. The band will embark on a world tour starting in October. All Hope Is Gone debuted at Number One in Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland. It debuted at Number Two in Belgium, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, and a Number Three debut in Norway.

I'm not surprised really, I was expecting Slipknot to be #1. I knew this when I saw a middle aged man walking his kids, with a Slipknot shirt on a day before that album came out.
The album is great, and this is a great victory over crappy music, we need to team up for this and take over the airwaves!

Old slipknot would have been cool but not for long. That is what most people simply do not get. How tired would you be if you band's albums sound like the same stuff of 10 years ago? I would like a band to progress, and as they get older so will their sound. Slipknot have gotten more technical, their old sound was really based on corporate expectation, even though thier new stuff does sound more structured and more for the masses, it's their songwriting skills coming into place.

I just bought this album myself, special edition because it was at the same price. I never was a big Slipknot fan, I really hate the albums Slipknot and Iowa, but this was surprisingly kick ass metal. Definately 100 steps away from nu metal.

I bought all hope is gone a few days ago and i must say this a a great album it displays many different kinds of emotions which is awesome because some bands just display the same emotions over and over again. Thank goodness. This is a pretty good album. I liked Vol. 3 a bit better, but maybe it's because I was still a real good fan of them at the time. Clearly, the musicianship is better this time around.

Man, I remember when the first album came out and I was like 20-something. At the time there wasn't much else interesting going on metalwise besides the all mighty Pantera. You, my friend, have what most people call...no musical taste. I think this could be Slipknot's best album because of the variety and yes the melodic qualities. You can still rock out and not have to scream your face off. I love the new album. There are so many mood swings and changes in the songs. All hope is gone is the best album out right now. And..for those Metallica fans, Death Magnetic will not top the charts.(Will still be a good album Though.)

Slipknot have several albums under their belt and have been around for a couple decades. They are here to stay. Im just getting in to this band, and i must say, they have surprised me. I'm really enjoy their music. Honestly, I dont think Slipknot is that good. To me, it just sounds like they arent trying hard enough, or that they do just enough to get by. Corey is an ok vocalist, i think he could do better. And with what, 8 people in that band, they could do some crazy good stuff. I know not all metal is crazy technical, and the vocals dont have to be growled or screamed. But Slipknot just seem like they arent talented or arent trying to me. And honestly, there are so many better bands that deserve this spot more than Slipknot does.

It is kind of what happened to rock music in the late 90's but i think that country might be the next big style. Why can't we leave 'the charts' to musical genres in which that kind of thing matters. Bands with fans that actually have a brain don't care about album sales. The reason RoadRunner is so concerned with Slipknot's album sales is because this the last album on the RoadRunner contract (I believe). I am not sure if Slipknot signed another one or not.

There is more good rap than just NWA, ever heard of A Tribe Called Quest? NWA weren't the only ones with a message; before them came Grandmaster Flash who actually had a song called The Message. And concerning recent rap, The Game's album is pretty good, his lyricism is a lot better on this one than that of most mainstream rap.

I'm a newer fan of Slipknot and I definatly agree with a lot of people, there sound changed as did the "mainstream" sound. Not to say I'm not a fan of Vol.3 or All Hope Is Gone, its just I feel there losing some of the sound which would classify them as metal. Sure, the new cd is "heavy" but I actually found it to be the weakest one yet in terms of that "metal" sound. Its more like a heavy rock with the groovey riffs and husky vocals. Bring back songs like Three Nil, Skin Ticket & The Virus of Life, they were at least interesting and had some sense of agression to them. Even songs like Wherein Lies Continue, which was ideally a "heavy" track, come off quite weak.

I'm going to defend rap on this one. I realize that rappers tend to be a dime a dozen, HOWEVER, there are a decent amount of rappers who can write lyrics and metaphors that would blow your mind. Once you get past the "pimpin hos" rappers and get into the guys that actually have something to say, you might stumble across a piece that you would enjoy. I think that a lot of bands could really take a hint and work on that, including slipknot. Corey Taylor is capable of so much more.

But yeah things look good for metal. I don't follow the Billboard charts, but I know that both Disturbed's Indestructible and COB's Blooddrunk sold pretty well on Itunes, and Death Magnetic should do well too. There are tons of metal fans out there, so I can see it making a comeback.

I think it is important to have them up there as number one. It gives them a sort of bragging right. I was severely disappointed by All Hope Is Gone. Though there were a few good, heavy, Slipknot-style songs on there most of it was softer rock stuff, very similar to Stone Sour (Sulfur, Dead Memories, Snuff etc) and some of them kind-of heavy songs just sounded really boring and generic, such as Vendetta and Butcher's Hook..."Are you ready for the time of your life, 'hey hey hey'" done without a really catchy voice, tone, riff, or ANYTHING was really dull. I do like slipknot, but I bought this album hoping to hear slipknot, that is a heavy album that stands out from most generic metal out there. I'm afraid most of All Hope Is Gone didn't deliver.

Yes, I agree not all music has to be screamed and thrashed, but that is what I expect on a SLIPKNOT album. If I wanted the sound on All Hope Is Gone I would have bought a Stone Sour album. For that reason it disappoints.

Also, I definitely agree that a band has to progress but there are ways to do that without going soft rock: their newer stuff features many more leads and harmonies, more feeling in the songs and some interesting vocal tricks that their older stuff didn't lack. Songs like All Hope Is Gone and Gematria show that the band is capable of progressing while still staying heavy. I just wish they had sustainted it for an entire album.
