they need the time. I felt that they were kinda slipping with hypnotize.

sad, but if they need a break for the sake of the music then i'm happy to see they think the music comes first.

HybridCacaphony :
I have a feeling there won't be a System of a Down again. Daron has already made that pretty clear with his new "side-project." He hasn't come right out and say it, but he's obviously dying to be the frontman of a band, and System of a Down just can't feed his ego... It's a pity. Even though their music wasn't the best, they were still very unique and accessible... Except for pretty much everything on Hypnotize.

Mabye they'll come back after this and make an album that doesn't stink of Daron taking over. He's a good guitarist but he's ruined the band.

dcamp67 :
Great band, but there is only so much you can come up with in that particular genre nitch. I'm glad they were smart enough to quit on top. They will be listed a one of the most influential groups of their time, kind of like Metallica were in the 80's. Rock on SOAD, you'll be missed...

FenderJTx :
Man SoaD were one of my favorites back in the day. Even though I listen to different music now, I still enjoyed Mesmerize/Hypnotize.

What a damn shame.

Perhaps they need this break; it might promise the return of an even better System. But my God they BETTER BLOODY WELL COME BACK or my life will just have no meaning anymore!!!

I hope they will come back. If they leave, they will be, as dcamp67 said, one of the most influential groups.

i'm glad their calling it quits before it got any worse for them. i personally didn't like thier last two CD's as much as toxicity or even steal this album. i deffiantly think this is the right choice for these guys.

if they do come back then i seriously hope the new stuff will sound nothing like hypnotize or mezmerize because those got old really fast and weren;t nearly as sick as the old albums

Upsetting news. I've been a fan since i first picked up Toxicity in 2002. Hopefully they will come to their senses in a few years and realize no one cares about side projects, we want System!!

SOAD were pretty cool, and I'm kinda glad they've decided to call it a day after releasing the Mesmerize/Hypnotise set, it'll make a great swan song for them and honestly i don't think there's anywhere else they could have taken their music without selling out and becoming more radio-friendly

a-user-name :
wow, it's been a while since I've seen one of these articles... they aren't broken up people, read the article.. it'll be at least 2 or 3 years, but they'll be back.. at least to tour. Only one ignorant Daron ego comment I think... kinda surprising. Some people don't realize he's always been the main contributor to the band. The side projects don't sound that appealing to me, although I might give SCOB a listen. As for the whole sell-out issue, think about it like this.... their record company wanted them to make "toxicity" over and over again, or at least stay in the same formula.. that's what the companies want, an easy way to repeat success. The new stuff they put out was a big risk on their part, since it's not that much like their previous stuff. So, whatever they do next isn't selling out, no matter what it is they put out.. cause it's what they want to do, not what the record company is telling them to do.

Can't wait to see em live when they get back together though...

Yeah, it's a damn shame they're breaking up. And I doubt they'll get back together again, anyhow. System has been my favorite band for quite a few years now, and I liked Mezmerize and Hypnotize as much as all their other stuff, too.
I really don't like how everybody is saying Daron ruined the band. He's the one who wrote most of their stuff, and he was their most influential member. I'm looking forward to his Scars On Broadway thing, since the sound will probly be the same as System's.

I have to say I am pretty disappointed to hear this but everyone has very good valid points here. I personally liked mezmerize and hypnotize, i really prefer their first 3 albums of course, but the only things with the last two is, i duno, it doesnt feel like a band effort, i call these CD's "The Daron Show"...Not that its bad to contribute a lot of music, but from the sounds of the making of the CD's it was just all Daron, i mean holy shit he recorded all the bass parts except 2 songs, and all the guitars, and what might as well be all the vocals, the only thing he didnt do was the drums, to me if u want to contribute music thats great, but if you want to be in control and record almost everything then you should be a solo artist, but no matter what personal issues i got with the last 2 albums they were still one of my favorite bands, and im confident they will come back in a few years

They already promised to bring back SOAD. And its not like they are all just completely seperating. Shavo plays bass in Scars on Broadway. And I mean, they have dedicated the last 12 years of their life to the band. Not much time to yourself. I think they made a good choice and WILL come back.

it doesn't really say that they're quitting in his interview, it just says they are going to do side-projects and stop doing System(it doesn't say for how long). i doubt this is a long term thing, i'm sure they'll come back in five years or so, they'll miss playing together :P

besides that, i am going to make like an emo and slit my wrists if they dont pull off a Black Sabbath reunion.

Black Sabbath is one of my favourite bands but they already did a bunch of reunion tours. But after Ozzy releases his next album next year and when he's done touring for it I'll have a feeling that sabbath will be back. Anyways why am I talking about one of the greatest bands of all time in a SOAD news post? Oh well.

Every band, like every person needs a break from doing what they do. Its an extended creative vacation, is what it seems like. And honestly, if you toured with the same people over and over for many months, you might get annoyed with them as well. Its just how humans are these days...although Daron is a bit arrogant for my liking. But nevertheless, System, despite the f*uckheads saying regardless, is always going to be one of the most influential and original bands out there. And there is only one genre, metal. all that other shit is just a way to label what others can't preceive. System revolutionized their music, and others, like it or not. And honestly, to the people that keep talking shit about System...why post on a System topic?! Seriously, if there was anything you could do, take these two choices: 1) Shoot yourself in the crotch with a shotgun 2) Don't post on a band's topic that you don't like....shitheads, I swear...
Anyhow, good luck to System and hope to hear them in the coming years. I think they're music will sound greater than ever.

What a f*****ng n00b. I don't even really like System that much, but I know they are one of the most creative bands in this sh**y era. Especially in the metal scene when you got sh*t bands all over the place trying to be the next Metallica. Your probably basing your judgement on Mezmerize/Hypnotize which was actually the beginning of Daron's solo projects to me since he basically shut out everyone but John on the drums. (Daron's favorite instrument is the drums...ironically

Anyways I think if System does come back some good things are going to happen.

1. Daron will stop singing.
2. Shavo will actually play bass since he started learning more theory on it and isn't treating it like his job (he was System's original guitarist and not a true bassist. Daron stole the guitar from him around 95...surprise surprise)
3. Daron will tune back in Drop C.
4. Serj will be able to show off his amazing vocals (best in this era I'd say...see the bridge and corus in Chop Suey! if you don't believe me)
5. John Dolmayan (DRUM! Magazine drummer of the year 2006) will give creative beats as usual see Deer Dance, Know, Toxicity for some of his drum beats.

you're not so smart, you know. just in case you didn't know, a GOOD GUITAR PLAYER doesn't need to write extremely hard songs with a 1000 bpm - tempo to be called a good guitar player. but obviously you're a 12 year old "metalhead" who gets excited only at power metal lowest quality showoff stuff.

I don't think that's the reason. Not many people come out with 2 cds in one year. I think that is the biggest reason for their hiatus.

first of all, starting by calling someone a noob makes you sound retarded. secondly, just because Shavo says he preffered guitar in an interview, doesn't mean he PLAYED IT IN SYSTEM FIRST. in fact, system was originally called SOIL, and it had daron, serj, and that old drummer. shavo was their MANAGER, and then started playing bass for them. don't just make shit up, you ****. secondly, if you're gogn to talk about serj singing well in the chorus of chop suey, then LISTEN TO CHOP SUEY. daron holds the melody, serj sings back up. I mean, you just all-around gave daron shit because he took over on the last two albums. sure, we heard more of his ideas, but if you didn't notice, HE'S WRITTEN LIKE 70 PERCENT OF THEIR MUSIC RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO. I understand what you're saying about how they do sound more like daron, but without darons writing, you wouldn't have system of a down, at all.I mean, for the most part I agree that we need more serj and drop C again, but you're just being a slanderous, lying little shithead.
