With Coheed, Foo Fighters' Hawkins Rips Off Rush? |
| artist: coheed and cambria |

Taylor Hawkins, drummer for the Foo Fighters and one of the most respected drummers in rock today, performs on Coheed and Cambria's latest album 'No World For Tomorrow.'
The album, which is Coheed and Cambria's 4th studio album, features Hawkins on drums instead of current touring drummer Chris Pennie, who is formally of Dillinger Escape Plan. Supposedly, Pennie wasn't allowed to perform on Coheed and Cambria's 'No World For Tomorrow' due to a contract dispute with his former label. Taylor, who rose onto the music scene drumming for Alanis Morissette, has been a seminal part of the Foo Fighters, with Dave Grohl since the bands inception and they have also recently been nominated for 5 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy for Best Album at the 50th Anniversary Grammy Awards.
We caught up with Hawkins to get his thoughts on performing on Coheed and Cambria's latest album and with Claudio Sanchez's vocals sounding eerily similar to Geddy Lee of Rush, Hawkins felt he had to try and rip off a few Neil Peart drum licks as well.
Watch video: With Coheed Hawkins Tries To Rip Off Rush Drum Licks
"It was a blast because Nick Raskulinecz, one of my best friends produced it. So we just had a great time trying to rip off Rush drum licks."
Coheed and Cambria will be performing at a few Holiday one off radio shows before beginning a brief tour of Europe for January of 2008. After returning from Europe, Coheed and Cambria will next be supporting Linkin Park on all dates of their upcoming national tour.
The tour goes from February 12th in Omaha, Nebraska and extends until March 10th in Sacramento, California and will be hitting 19 cities, including Madison Square Garden in New York and Staples Center in Los Angeles. The dates come on the heels of Coheed's successful sold-out 25-date national headlining tour that wrapped at New York City's Roseland Ballroom on November 29, 2007. Taylor Hawkins and The Foo Fighters will start their 2008 Tour in support for 'Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace' on Jan 16th in Sunrise, Florida and they have dates booked in The U.S., Canada and Australia through May of 2008.

Nothing against linkin park, but i guess i kinda grew out of em. Id much rather go see Coheed on a headlining tour than with LP. Too many teenys for me IMO.
Its pretty hard to rip off a drummer i think. Sure, u can rip off a drummer's style, and Neil's isnt too difficult for some1 like Taylor Hawkins to do, but i think its pretty hard for some1 professional and creative to blatantly copy another drummers style. For example, QOTSA did their most popular record with Dave Grohl. When Joey came in, it mustve been difficult to get Dave's fills on No One Knows. He does get close, but mainly improvises. And i really doubt Taylor can play as fast or as well as someone like Neil Peart. POSTED: 12/17/2007 - 03:32 pm / quote |

yeah it really is. its stupid too... they're both awesome drummers, and obviously neil peart is a faster, more technical drummer. But its different types of music too. Coheed happens to be my favorite band (alongside the mars volta) and i thought the drumming on the album was pretty solid, especially for a studio sit-in. It was just nothing to gawk over. but everyone seems to be taking this worthless news a little too seriously. Taylor just made one comment and of course it had to be on UG so everyone could compare drummers. Give it a rest, guys.POSTED: 12/17/2007 - 04:55 pm / quote |

Regardless of Dream Theater, Neil Peart is on a completely different level than Hawkins, and all drummers for that matter. Not only does he play amazingly, but he was one of the first to play the drums like that. With that said, yes, I know Hawkins was joking. Sorry there bud about the SPELLING MISTAKE... and surprise surprise, someone with FOO in their name defending their drummer. First off I'm in my 20's and not just some metal head, and secondly I do like the Foo Fighters but there's no way Hawkins plays like Peart or Portnoy... I suggest taking a look at some of their live videos on Youtube if you don't believe me.
If Taylor can play better than he does on the Foo Fighters albums, then why doesn't he show it? What is the point of having this hidden potential and not using it? That's what gets me about all these bands now days. Bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Rush, and most progressive bands play far more technically and skilled than your average band could even dream of. Besides, it must suck to be in a band knowing you could be replaced by Dave Grohl at the drop of a hat.POSTED: 12/17/2007 - 06:26 pm / quote |

I like Led Zeppelin, but NONE of the members of that band were very good outside of the context of Led Zeppelin. Peart's snare technique alone is ridiculous for a rock drummer.
As for Hawkins' comment about ripping off of Neil Peart. It's no big deal if he did. Lots of drummers swipe ideas from other drummers. John Bonham and Jeff Porcaro both stole Bearnard Purdie's "Purdie Shuffle." There's even a video of Neil Peart floating around out there where he talks about a few fills he "stole" from Steve Gadd. Drummers aren't nearly as nit picky as guitar players when it comes to things like that.POSTED: 12/17/2007 - 10:10 pm / quote |
