Amplitube iRig For iPhone / iPod Touch Featured review by: UG Team, on september 08, 2010

Features: Amplitube iRig is meant to be a modeling practice tool for guitar and bass players, housed in the Apple iPhone or iPod Touch (a separate, similar version is also available for the Apple iPad). Based on the PC and Mac Amplitube software, the iRig is a bite-sized version, giving most musicians everything they need to practice at home or on the go, without having to lug around separate amplifiers or bulky modeling hardware.

Getting started with Amplitube iRig is very straightforward. The app is well designed and makes good use of the touch screen interface. You plug your guitar or bass into the iRig interface, using any standard instrument cable, and then the iRig cable plugs right into the iPhone. Once you launch the app, the app starts-up fairly quickly, even on an older iPhone 3G.

This edition of Amplitube offers 5 types of amplifiers, Clean, Crunch, Lead, Metal and a separate amp for Bass. They include five different speaker types, two different microphone types (dynamic or condenser), and eleven different stomp boxes. These include all the core stomps that would be found on most players’ pedalboards, including overdrive, fuzz, distortion, delay, chorus, flanger and more. You simply dial in the rig that you want to play through, and start jamming.

There is no built-in recording, but you can connect the headphones/line-out jack to a mixer or recorder with ease, and have a complete recording setup in the palm of your hands.

Also, there is no way to quickly jump back and forth between settings mid-song, so this prevents practicing any songs where various tones need to be toggled throughout the song, but for straightforward practicing with a particular tone, this provides quite a bit for the average guitar or bass player.

The software does include a very handy feature from the full-sized version of Amplitube: the ability to import a song and play along with it, which helps tremendously for practice. Further, the software provides a built-in tuner and metronome, making this the perfect practice tool. // 9

Sound: The sound quality is impressive considering the diminutive size of an iPhone 3G, used as the test bed for this review. The iRig can be connected to headphones or powered speakers, and a very wide dynamic range is output, making this more than adequate for home practice and play. Some nuances of guitar playing shine through with good clarity, and overall the modeling software is as good as the full-sized versions of Amplitube. The same algorithms and software are probably used, as the sounds are very similar across the board.

As with many modeling software packages, a more experienced guitar player might notice some missing subtleties of an all-tube amplifier, especially sensitivity to pick attack and the blooms and trails and overall sustain of playing through some amplifiers, but this product seems to be geared most towards the player who does not want to invest in a standalone modeling amplifier, or a full out POD-style device, for which this is a great replacement. // 8

Impression: Amplitube iRig is a great example of an iPhone app that you would never have anticipated when you originally bought your device, but it fills a great niche. For a home player (I.e. The traditional “basement player”) who has an iPhone or an iPod Touch, this setup is a very inexpensive, easy-to-use modeling package, allowing you to practice with a half-stack in the palm of your hands. // 8

There's a free version on iTunes then it's like $20 for the full version.

It's not made by apple. None of the apps are.

OHmygodno.. Please stop Apple. But ya know what, its actually a good thinking product.. if I had the money for an iPhone, which costs more than my 120 watt amp.. I would get this indeed.

I doubt the models use the same algorithms across the board as the PC/Mac versions. There is considerably less computing power in an iPhone than in a desktop/laptop computer. Guitar Rig 3 has pushed my laptop fairly hard before, I'm sure if it used the same calculations the phone would lag out. Besides not having a very powerful processor, it has very little ram.

Except Apple doesn't decide the price of third party addons or software. HURR.

Apple didn't make this. HURRx2. Also, it runs on iPod touch. Then again, those cost more than my amp too...

Line6 pocket pod and the peavey app are both NOT better in any way. IK knows amp sims, line6 just blows and has blown for a long time, and peavey had nothing to do with the one that bears their name (some app chop shop did it)

All this "Costs more than my amp"

This wasn't intended to replace your amp, nor the idea that you should go buy an iPhone to play on the run, it's simply just an addon for those who already have an iPhone/iPod...

And the iPod touch is a wonderful device which I bet increadibly many music-lover have, same goes for UG

Basically, I like this idea.

It is a great product, £30 / $40, it's not exactly expensive either. Guitarists like Claudio Sanchez use this while touring to come up with ideas and tones. It's tiny, versatile tool that's more useful than you would think.

My advice? GET ONE!

megaironpriest wrote on 09/08/2010 - 12:00 pm / quote |
I might get it, it would be good to practice on the go if you don't have room to bring an amp or a place to plug it in. I've also wanted to play metal in the forest.

Also you guys saying it costs more then an amp are stupid. This product is just an app they put out for people who have iphones, its not meant to be the sole purpose of the device

Look, it means more money for Apple. Even if its not made by them, they get royalties for using the 'i' prefix/related items thingy. It costs more than an AMP because the few people who dont have money to get an iWhatever are being asked to buy something thats pointlessly overpriced at +£100 and then being asked to buy an app AND a device for it. Better off getting one of those £50 portable amps that are like the size of walkie talkies from a music shop that actually work. Yes, you get versitality with the iDontcare but you also get versitality in arterial blood spray and it'd probably be better value for money if you bought it.

Quite possibly, but I have a large array of dist. pedals and so on to cover it up. I have it just for the loudness and clarity.

The app is about 20 bucks but the actual iRig piece to connect your guitar to your phone cost me another $50 (including shipping; I preordered it. You can find them in stores now). It's an alright application, it is what it is, basically. I was in the market for a new phone and it's basically why I switched from blackberry.

trypsin wrote on 09/08/2010 - 03:15 pm / quote |
I have it, Cost me $50 for the iRig. The App needs some work though. Lots of clicking and high pitch noises getting through especially when using the high gain stomps. Support for multitasking is not yet implemented, but it's on the way. IK Media has Reps watching a lot of the guitar forums around the web asking for feedback and leaving comments.

I haven't used this, but to me, it sounds like it would be a really cool thing to have. Obviously it's not going to sound better than actual stompboxes/pedals/amps etc, but it sounds to me like it gives you a generic version. And that's all you need for practicing. I would love to have this, because i sold my practice amp to help me purchase a larger amp. lol This would be a really cheap investment.

iPhone 4 has a 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM. Pretty respectable for a phone.

I love this! I use Guitar pro6 to export midi that I download from ultimate guitar. Then using Sonar 8.5 pro I make backing tracks with drums from Superior Drummer® 2.0 from Toontracks, For the bass I go with SCARBEE MM-BASS AMPED from native instruments. upload them to my iPhone using the amplitube app."ROCK N' ROLL"!!! Big hug to Ultimate Guitar for all the guitar pro files... THX U-G....
follow these steps and you will be glad you didn't buy a cheap practise amp.
This thing is worth the fifty bucks hands down.

I think it's more commented on than most guitars I've seen here. I have it. I use it. It's awesome. Not expensive. Obviously not replacing an amp but, I play it through my Orange amp with my Sg and it sounds amazing as an effects processor basically. I use pedals as well, and it has 4 track recording features to that you can sync to your computer. Dude. This is not just a pocket amp. I know people who use the ipad version for gigs. So not an evil product. And made by IK multimedia... recording software company. Seriously. Best product ever. But, you have to be an iphone user first. But iphone was the best thing invented since the les paul.
