Features: This Studiobass is better and nicer sounding then the big Ampeg cvt's ,with it's versatile tone regulation, besides the standard Fender tone balancing there is a 5 freq equalizer that let's you tune to any sound you want , it's very roomy with a max of 440 musicwatts from his 6 x 6L6-s ,be carefull because you can blow the EV speaker , I replaced it with a E140 JBL and this is the best combination I have ever heard ; for inside gigs this is plenty bass ; for outside open air gigs I use two of these beasts interlinked via the line in and output and this on JBL's Voice of the theater Bass Hornspeakers I get easaly over the modern PA systems with a very deep profond bass that you feel shaking the whole podium and all of the windows around you . it's only 12 x 6L6 tubes but no modern PA system with big subwoofers can compare to this sound ; the old Hornspeakers still are sounding way clearer and much more detailed plus they have an enormous efficiency when equipped with the best of the old JBL's like the E130 and E140
the amps were made around the 80's and I have upgraded them with outputtrannies from the Fender 400 watts amps it makes a big difference : more power and deeper bass plus less independency from the outputimpedance , be it 4 or 8 ohm speakers , the tubes I run are Canadian 6l6WGB from Philips / Sylvania's from the Army with Mil spec's , the best tubes so far that replace the oldstyle RCA 6L6 's lots better then Groove tubes or Russian BS ..
So If you can locate one of these beasts then don't waste your time but grab it !! it's more or less identique to the big SUPERTWINS from Fender , but they have different outputtranies for lower basssounds . they are very seldom to find , be warned they weigh a Ton to move !! around 80 kilos the whole combo , most of them are split for the weight , seperate amps and seperate speakerbox .. and they are very topheavy !The handle can not take it to move it around , I modified mine with two strong side handles . I made my name: Fatbass with them ;
To me this is just the thing to have , I wouldn(t change for anything else , no Ampeg for me thank you .. these two beasts are sufficient everywhere together with my JBL Horns ; // 9
Sound: Sound is Clean clean clean , Fender clean , no backgroundnoise , no hummin .. real Studio gear , fantastic tonesettings possible . use the equalizer to make your own sound , I play with Hofner 500Ct and Epi Viola . I play mostly 60 ties music and it suites wonderfull. // 9
Reliability & Durability: Unless some scratching from poti's that's easaly cleaned with some contactspray , no problems with the amp ; but let it cool down before moving it around when finished playing to save your tubes from harm ; Fender people don't even know this amp exists !! // 9
Impression: I play about 4 or 5 years now on this beast , If it's lost I get an identical one for sure ! compared to the Ampeg's : it got more possible tonesettings and it's cheaper in maintenance :6L6 are way cheaper then 6550's .As standard combo is the perfect studio bassamp for bassguitar or even for stringbass , using the ampschassis only with seperate JBL speakers makes for the ultimate sound you can get ; // 10
