Sound: This album is a great example of Canadian Blues with heavy jamaican drums. The fact that for most of the songs on this album is that, Gordy Johnson uses no distortion, just uses a tube amp cranked all the way up really contributes to the sound. AAA Aardvark Hotel, which is one of the more eccentric tunes on the album, is a strangely good blend of saxaphone with rock. The tones on this album range from grity riffs in "Ride Like Hell" and "I'm A Ram" to softer mellow electric blues song in "Wild Ox Moan." // 10

Lyrics: Gordy Johnson has quite a vocal talent to go with his guitar skills, as is shown inthis album. You here many song about women, but never a song where you beg for your stuff back like in "How Many Times" or somgs about you 500lb dog with a bellowing bark like "Sugar In My Coffee," if theres something more different this side of Primus or the Barenaked Ladies then I have yet to hear it. Although they didn't write the lyrics, Big Sugar redoes "Dear Mr. Fantasy" which is originally a Steve Winwood Tune. // 8

Overall Impression: This album has a distinctive assaultingly loud bluesy tone, that would make your ears press charges. Aside from the fact that the only other artist that is close to this genre is Stevie Ray Vaughn, 500 Pounds is a very good album that showcases some of Canadas talent aside from Three Days Grace or "William Shatner." The fact that I'm Canadian awards the no leniancy, Big Sugar is just an original band with explosively loud and raw tone. // 9
