Sound: The debut album for this Melbourne based power metal band left them with a promising career after they siged with the german label LMP. The band itself takes influence from bands like Queensryche but shares similarities with bands like Hammerfall and Stratovarius. This album in particular has a cultural feel to it. It is a more common based power metal album and shares a variety of fast, slow and technical styles of power metal. The guitar solos are much less highlighted in this album compared to the followers.
01.Fall Of The Reich: this song quickly grabs he attention of the listener. Immediately the song is started at full speed and intensity. This is a perfect example of a band trying to make the best possible impression. The band has made a very promising and wise song (9/10).
02.Legacy: speed has always been a bid component of power metal and this song takes on that tradition perfectly. The guitars and drums work extremely well together and make a geat musical connection which consists through out the whole song (8/10).
03.Guardian: this song is an example of the more cultural side of power metal. The great thing about Black Majesty is that like other power metal bands the are able to paint a picture of what the song is meant to be about. Many different moodsare expressed in his song (8/10).
04.Sands Of Time: the intro to this song is slower than what is traditionally played. This song shows evidence of influence by the first generations of power metal like Blind Guardian and Helloween. After the intro a true anthem of power metal is unleashed. This is one of the best songs on the album (9/10)
05.Destination: with a slower start this instrumental also instantly begins and consists with a heavy and crushing sound. This instrumental is entertaining but it is also quite repetitive. This track would have been better if it lead up to the following (7/10).
06.Colliding Worlds: this song is just as fast as the rest but it also shows some of the bands melodic and technical skills. The keyboards and the solo are well written in this song and are backed up with great chorus's, verses and bridges (8/10).
07.No Sanctuary: short of speed but not short of pure skill. This song has some of the best riffs and manages to stay simple but doesn't lack in the traditional sound that fans love. This song could do with a solo or two to increase the impression of the song but it is still one of the best songs on the album (8.5/10).
08.Beyond Reality: this is one of the weaker songs on the album. It still shares the same influence and skills of the other songs but it is tainted with an unnecessarily long intro. The rest of the song is acceptable but once again is not the greatest it can be (7/10).
09.Lady Of The Lake: starting off with a piano and harmonic intro, the first impression of this song is a power ballad. I personally don't like power metal doing softer songs. But this song shares some spontanious heavy riffs which are built up in suspence. It is a clever song because it is not at all predictable. For the slowest track on the album it still proves the band can rock hard and play at a world class level (8/10). // 8
Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics in this album can be a little bit too culturally influnced but they suit the power metal genre well. The lyrics are easy to understand and are a straight match with the music. I liked the way the singer (John Cavaliere) sung at the same speed and beat as the music. It was a safe and promising option to take and it worked well forthem. His skills as a vocalist are weaker in this album that the following but for his debut he was impressive and should be proud. // 7
Impression: Debut albums create the band and the future. This may not have been the best power metal album but it did show the bands potential and was a solid creation. I am not surprised the band is still going strong and have used the oppertunity to start a musical career well. They have not wasted the oppertunity to show the world that they are a group of talented musicians. // 9
