If The Times They Are A-Changin' isn't a marked step forward from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, even if it is his first collection of all originals, it's nevertheless a fine collection all the same.

Sound: Dylans most familliar sound. Just a single acoustic and trademark shrill voice. It is the classic sound of Dylan before he ever considered adding other instruments to his songs. The guitar tends to take a back seat to allow focus on the lyrics. This is the third of his many albums. // 8

Lyrics and Singing: Much darker than previous albums or almost anything done afterwards. In particular 'The Ballad Of Hollis Brown' is an obvious example of doom and gloom. It is a simple tale of how a man can't afford to live so shoots his family and then himself. The others songs, apart from the title track, are very similar. That does not mean to say that this is necessarily a bad thing, just don't expect any happy songs. However, the stories that are told do make for very compelling listening. // 9

Impression: A darker affair than any other Dylan albums. It is difficult to listen to the whole album at once but the overall solid sound and quality of this album makes repated listening a must. My personal favorite is 'Ballad Of Hollis Brown' and the obvious standout is the title track. No other particular tracks standout as they all have a similar feel. If all of my Bob Dylan albums went missing this one would be bought again but not before a few of the others. // 7
