Sound: Ravishing Grimness is a double edged sword, on one side it is a slight return to the earlier material, on the other it adds a prominent punk feel. As far as the guitars go, the album consists of solid riffs and the bass is represented well in the mix. But the drums are a serious flaw, Ferniz abandons blast beat in favor of the lesser d-beat, fortifying the punk element. // 6

Lyrics: Though not brilliant the lyrics are good, not straying far from the roots, mostly writing abut darkness Ferniz is back as the primary lyricist on Ravishing Grimness. Nocturno Culto's vocals are not good as on the earlier stuff but are in line with the instruments and the lyrics. // 7

Overall Impression: The effort is admirable, you can't compare this album with the A blaze in the Northern Sky - Panzerfaust era but amongst the albums after Total Death, Ravishing Grimness takes a respected place. This could have been a much better album, at least as the atmosphere is concerned, it lacks the monotony of the long blast beat sections of Transilvanian Hunger. The move from the black metal style to more punk/crust one, on this album and those that followed was always under dispute, hard liners claim that it is a failed attempt for Darkthrone to prove themselves on the musical aspect, while some welcome the addition of new elements. // 6
