Josh Shiells :
Somewhat-above average power metal.

Better than DragonForce, anyway.

Sabbath89 :
This album was ok. Not as good as Heathenreel of The Winter Wake, but a lot better than that Hot Topic hit known as the Scythe.

I'm glad that they're going back to their roots.
I really didn't like the scythe, but Heathenreel is one of my favourite albums of all time.

"Hot Topic hit"? What the...? I've never heard anyone other than the person who introduced me to Elvenking's music talk about the band, let alone that album. How do you figure it's a "Hot Topic hit"?

Well atleast they went back to their folk roots...coz i was a lil worried about the direction Scythe was going in....Their Skyclad influence shows on this album and i love it but i prefer the earlier albums and their mix between metal and folk....The Scythe and this album just doesnt cut it.

That whole thing was priceless. And Sonata rules. I really must look into Elvenking. They sound like my kind of sound.

I'm going to have to check this out, I hope they'll come out with an album like Wyrd sometime. I didn't really like the sound of The scythe.

Sonata is definitely my favorite power metal band, but Elvenking is a close second. Dragonforce doesn't even make it into my top ten

Have you listened to it? If not listen to it, and compare it to previous albums. They were trying to fit into that whole dare I say "emo-esque" scene. Just look up the video for The Divided Heart and you'll know what I mean. Not just the way they started dressing either, because I couldn't care less. But I'm talking about the vocals.

I definitely like heathenreel although that's all I've ever heard of them besides the scythe. I think they did the whole power/folk/heavier metal thing perfectly in heathenreel, the guys voice is good but it's not constantly in your face and the band shows it's creativity n chops w/out being over the top as well. I agree with whoever said that the lead singer's singing sounds different in the scythe and not in a good way. I gotta check this out, hopefully the singer went back to what worked in the pre-scythe era in this album. I heard that even though they created this acoustic album that they had also been writing heavier stuff that's for their next cd, kinda like what Opeth did with Deliverance and Damnation, can anyone confirm this?

What was wrong with the Scythe. maybe they wanted to change a little to try and expand there reaches to other viewers. i like all of there stuff, the scythe was a nice change and now they are back

I suppose you have some valid points. It is a lot different from their typical album, but that's not always a bad thing. Personally, I like it when bands experiment with different sounds.

Not saying I'm right on the matter or anything, it's obviously a matter of opinion, I just don't know about it being a "Hot Topic hit" just because they tried something different. Honestly, though, if more emo sounded that way, I would consider buying tighter pants.
