Sound: This was the Germs' first and only LP. Joan Jett produced it, and Darby Crash wanted her to make it sound like Never Mind The Bollocks. However, it turned out to sound cleaner without loosing the raw edge the bands sound has. The instruments are sloppy of course, and Darby's singing is the way it always is. His singing goes perfect together with the music and it makes for an amazing punk record. (GI) was released in 1979 only on vinyl and is only found on CD today with the Germs "MIA - The Complete Anthology" compilation. // 9

Lyrics and Singing: Darby Crash is actually a great poet. He had a troubled childhood, and he did a lot of drugs and was basically crazy so he had plenty of things to write about. A song like 'Manimal' seems to reflect his troubles growing up. Darby has a great punk voice. It is so unique and it just makes the Germs who they are. Darby did a great job on the lyrics and they go great with the music. // 8

Impression: This is definately one of the best punk records ever made. It arguably started the hardcore punk genre of the 80's. If it didn't start it, it surely influenced the artists to follow. My most impressive songs on this record are the classic "Lexicon Devil", "What We Do Is Secret", "Manimal" and "Media Blitz". All the other songs are great punk songs also and are fun as hell to listen to. (GI) doesn't really lack anything musically or lyrically. Keep in mind that it is a early LA hardcore punk album and nothing on it is gonna be spectacular. Regardless, it is a fantastic listen and any punk rock fan will enjoy this record. // 8
