It’s not business-as-usual for the Connecticut hardcore superstars. New things abound on Hatebreed and how their fans will accept it remains to be seen. But the band earns points for effort and for trying something new at this stage of the game.

Sound: Like death and taxes, you have an expectation when you encounter a Hatebreed record. Moshy, stompy, simple anthems. More breakdowns than a mental institution or the shoulder of a freeway. Positive lyrical assertions that invite and even demand singing along, delivered in the raspy, husky talking-singing voice of Jamey Jasta, who has established himself as the hardcore scene’s ambassador. You can check off most of the items on that list, as they are all present and accounted for on Hatebreed. But things have been beefed up considerably. Perhaps it’s the addition of new (and former) guitarist Wayne Lozniak; the guitars are more thought out and not as simplistic as before. Dare we say there is some shred (!!!) on a Hatebreed record? Well, there is on “Between Hell and a Heartbeat” and “Hands of a Dying Man.” There are also moments on “In Ashes They Shall Reap” and “Through the Thorns” that are more like Kingdom of Sorrow, Jasta’s side project with Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein, thanks to their thick, sludgy stew of sounds. Honestly, those aren’t expected and they are ambitious, but they do feel a wee bit out of place on a Hatebreed record. The band shines and excels when popping off short, sweet and utterly Cro-Magnon riffage and anthems. While they are to be applauded for not taking the road most travelled with this self-titled affair, some of these moments do need a GPS to reel them back into Hatebreed territory. // 8

Lyrics and Singing: Jasta’s raspy snarl is still here. But he also sings like he did on the Kingdom of Sorrow record and as stated prior, those moments are probably best if they remain in the Kingdom of Sorrow sessions. It’s strange to hear him attempt to sing on a Hatebreed record, especially 14 years into the band’s career and it will jar Hatebreed diehards. Again, it’s admirable and ambitious, but it’s also not expected. But these are just a sprinkling of moments; for the most part, Jasta is in full Jasta mode, barking, pumping fists, encouraging the listener to think for himself and to rise above the general bullshit nonsense that can clutter our lives. That aspect of Hatebreed remains firmly and fully in tact. // 7

Impression: So many bands pay lip service to not making the same record twice or over and over and over again ad naseum. Hatebreed didn’t do that on Hatebreed, but they did drift a bit from what they do so well and the listener may have mixed emotions about the results. There’s always something to be said for shaking things up and going against the waves in the whirlpool. It’s going to be up to the individual Hatebreed fan to see how they react to the “different” tunes. It’s only a few songs and the majority of the album is chant-drive, fraternal and communal HxCx. // 8

They are a god awful METAL band, but as a hardcore band they are pretty damn good. I wish they went back to the style of satisfaction is the death of desire. Perseverance was their last good album. I'd say hatebreed is just losing their touch.

I just think their music is way to simplified for me to even bother buying or listening. Anyone can downtune and hammer out 0's, 3's, 5's and 6's on the fretboard. Just BLAH!

then go ahead and do that, and on that note, make some people listen to you. Of course Hatebreed does simple music, and may be everyone can do that. But does everyone have a Fanbase? do YOU have one?

This music definitely isn't for everyone. But this isn't the only band that has become popular from simple songs. Look at other bands, like AC/DC or Godsmack. Most of AC/DC's songs are centered around three chords, and Godsmack does the same detuned power chord riffs as other bands. They are very popular and have made an entire career of playing simple music. It's just what crowd it's aimed at, and what the band has fun playing. Have you listened to Hatebreed's "For The Lions" cover album? The guys have talent...they can solo, they can play complex riffs...they just choose to write a different type of music. I think black metal in all it's Lord of the Rings lore, billions of nails, and face painted glory is a little goofy, for example, but hey...to each his own.

hatebreed do simple songs but they never fail to be catchy and i've got much respect for them because of the way they write stuff. haven't heard this album yet but i'm lookin forward to listening to it

I bought ths album yesterday (yesterday being the 30th of september) and i have to say that even though it's a simple album, it sill sounds good. A lot of bands nowadays are trying to be so technical that they just end up not making appealing music. I'm not saying there's a problem with technical stuff. I like that too but it's nice to listen to simple things once in a while.

im a hatebreed fan and i still find the satisfaction and perseverance are soooo way better than this new album. i guess every metal band will come up with a very disappointing album no matter how rockin bad ass they are.. and for those critics out there, try first to form a band by yourselves and lets hear how bad your sh*t will sound and we're surely be more than happy to discuss here how p*ssy you guys are...

ACTUALLY, they haven't had him, or anyone else host it in a few years. And if he's such a poser, why don't you start your own band and let us hear it and we'll see if your lyrics can make us beat someone's ass like Hatebreed's.
The only song I've heard of this one so far is "In Ashes They Shall Reap" and I think t's great. BUT, I'va also never heard a Hatebreed song I didn't like.

I saw them live in Belgium (Graspop Metal Meeting 2009)
Man...the croud went insane!
There was a huge circle pit around the f'cking sound tower! We did a Wall Of Death and in the end... about 100 people got up the stage, security just couldn't stop them - they started moshing and headbanging with the band while they kept playing. Dude I don't like their music, still don't, but man...what an atmosphere. It wasn't even a headline performance.
They played an hour or 2 before slipknot if I remember well enough. Dude Carlsberg actually does braindamage

Comin from someone who's username is "heartagram" Give me a break. I never stated I could write better lyrics, I just stated the facts. If I did choose to write lyrics about non-conformity and how agianst the system I am and how much the world sucks - I most certainly wouldnt go back on myself and conform to the ways of one of the worlds biggest corporations.

There are some really cool songs on this album, which build off the foundation Supremacy laid down, but for the most part the songs seem to have taken a backward step toward Perseverance-era.

I certainly ****ing luv this new album! i was dissapointed with Supremacy but this album rocks! Just when i hoped that new/old guitarist would add 'shred' to this band when i was listening to For the Lions, they certainly did it in this album!!!!!
