Sound: The sound is quite a difference from Hot Hot Heat's previous release, Happiness LTD, but provides the listener with some new and interesting sounds. After a slightly disappointing last CD, HHH had to change their sound up somewhat.
This CD is a dramatic jump from the poppy sounding Happiness LTD, to a new indie/piano/synth rock sound. At first, I wasn't quite sure what the band had up their sleeve, but it was an ace for me. The music sounds somewhat reminiscent of Make Up the Breakdown with a twist. Different sound suits Hot Hot Heat. // 9
Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are not anything astounding. It keeps to the typical Hot Hot Heat style of writing. The verses are fast and the choruses are catchy. The content is nothing spectacular, but the great part of it is that the strange lyrics perfectly compliment the odd, but funky sounds of the music. The choruses tend to repeat several times throughout the song (I.E. What is Rational?) But this is what HHH traditionally does, so for them it works. // 7
Impression: Overall the album is huge step up from Happiness LTD and on par with Make Up The Breakdown and Elevator. The fact that HHH takes the music from Make Up The Breakdown and the lyric and writing styles from the first two albums makes for a great listen.
The downside of the album, as most of HHH's albums, is that the 12 song CD is only 40 minutes long. The upside to the short style of song, is that it makes want to put the album on repeat. I enjoy this album, makes for a great listen especially if you are a fan of the band. Future Breeds is well done and what one would expect from Hot Hot Heat after their last release. The album kept me guessing and put a reminder that bands can change their sound and the Hot Hot Heat, pull it off greatly. // 8
