Sound: This compilation of Howlin' (Chester Burnett) Wolf's music contains great guitar riffs and harmonica instrumentals as well as his powerful growling voice. This album is excellent in that it allows listeners to hear the full spectrum of his work from the '50s-'70s and is well worth listening to! Because some of the recordings are quite early this means the quality is not excellent however, the record has been re-mastered by the studios Spectrum, and the quality is consistently good. // 8

Lyrics and Singing: Howlin’ Wolf’s lyrics are simple yet to the point, many addressing life in general. His voice is one of the most impressive with a wide vocal range from whoops to throaty growls. The compilation gives an excellent spectrum of the bluesman’s vocal talent especially in such songs as smokestack lightnin' and killing floor. // 9

Impression: This compilation is the perfect introduction to howlin' wolf it gives a varied selection of his songs from throughout his career from his beginnings in the early '50s, right up to his death in 1976. The album encourages the listener to explore more of Howlin' Wolfs music and to widen the listener’s spectrum; those who like this type of blues would also enjoy muddy waters, B.B. King or Albert King. I love this album because the music is the perfect blend of blues guitar, harmonica, and an epic blues voice this is a great compilation, excellent for anyone unsure if they enjoy the blues this compilation of howlin' wolfs music is likely to give you an idea. // 9
