Youth Review

Youth
Release Date: Mar 7, 2006
Label: JDub/EMI

Even if he didn't, and even if he or the label chose the wrong producer for the undertaking, Youth is meaty enough to suggest this man is no gimmick but an artist with his eye on the long haul.

Sound: Wow, talk about something nobody was expecting. In an era of pop-punk and synth-rock, who would have ever guessed that the next hot new band would have been a Hassidic Jew from Brooklyn singing reggae? His sound is a mix of old school Bob Marley reggae, a slight touch of seventies rock and roll that comes out on the tracks “Youth” and “King Without A Crown,” and a dash of Israeli folk music sprinkled over every track. Although he is being very much over commercialized as of late, that does not take away from the fact that his sound is unique and refreshing. // 10

Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are heavily influenced by his Judaism study. The song “Medley” is the best example of this with lyrics such as “Burn the sacrifice of pride/And ride on to mount Zion.” The thing that bothers me about the Matisyahu’s delivery, while very upbeat and catchy, is the feeling that he is trying to impose his believes onto the listener. He does not talk about his experiences, he just tells the listener what not to do and it makes me feel like I’m eight years old again, sitting in Hebrew school class, and trying not to die of boredom while an old man tells me how great God is. I feel that I can’t listen to the album more than once in a while or I’ll never be able to listen to the album again. // 6

Impression: Despite all the preaching and the over commercialization, “Youth” is still a remarkable album that definitely deserves a listen at least once. Even if you usually do not like reggae, you still may like this album because of how different it is than normal reggae albums. If I lost this album, I think I would have to buy it again just to have this unique piece of musical history in my collection. Although most people seem to treat him like a sideshow oddity, the Crown Prince Of Tel Aviv will persevere to do what he does best, and try to become more than a two hit wonder. // 8

Sound: Nobody really every thinks of combining reggae with a Jewish heritage. It just seems like one of those things if somebody told you about you would just say cool and not really care. Most people would tell you that jewish reggea would sound okay at best. this is so not true this CD is absoultly mind blowing. It has one of those beats that when you hear it chatches your ear and drags you over. Sometimes it does this without you even paying attention. one minute you will be just walking around your house and you hear your brother or sister or somebody listening to it in the other room and before you know it you will be moving to the beat. It is very mellow and relaxing. you could enjoy this music even if you weren't listening to the words or meaning. You would find this very enjoyable if you just let yourself be surrounded by the beautiful sound and relaxe. // 9

Lyrics and Singing: This Album has some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. It touches base on several different ideas. These ideas go from A persons faith to fighting wars or even to love. This CD hits almost every aspect possible. Matisyahu is an alright vocalist. His tone and such could be better but the words he uses and the way he strings them together makes an absoultly amazing effect. This man uses his words in such a way that poets and artists alike can only dream of. // 10

Impression: "Youth" by far really is an amazing album if you don't already own it then go out and buy it right now. Seriously it is a brilant work of art. Anyone who says they don't even like a single song off this album just a little bit is lying to you because they know your right. On another note if you ever get the chance to listen to "king without a crown" the live at Stubbs edition you really must. That will completly blow your mind away. Matisyahu is really one of a kind. // 10

Well, I don't think he's as preachy as the reviewer says that he is. After all, every song encourages people to do something, even if just by talking about it. At least he isn't being pansy about what he believes.

I heard his stuff just before this album came out, from my 60 year old math teacher, who mostly listens to jazz and blues...I wonder how he found it.

I don't think it's a forcing of beliefs.
And I really enjoy the lyrics, but seriously coming
from a kid that listens to whole lot of metal, Matisyahu is a great listen when you're looking for something that's a softer, but still keeps wanting to dance.
