Sound: Colin MacIntyre aka Mull Historical Society is back with the follow-up to last year's slightly dissapointing Us. This Is Hope is thankfully not quite so disposable, it's full of dreamy pop, heart-wrenching piano and edgy guitars. Mr. MacIntyre has definitely produced his best work here taking his slightly twee Hebrides insipired Indie/Pop to another level. The album was actually finished in the Deep South of the USA and it is here where the theme of hope became to be where Colin discovered the gospel singers and profit poets of New Orleans. // 10
Lyrics and Singing: As always with MHS the lyrics are often engaging, thought-provoking and intelligent. The theme of hope is extended to include topics such as love, death, time, science, man, woman, machine, war, community, ethics, metaphysics, work and evolution. The real pleasure comes with the strong bond between the music and lyrics as Mr. MacIntyre has beautifully composed melodys and structures which bring to the fore the power of the songs. // 10
Impression: Mull Historical Society is a law unto itself, you will not buy another contemporary album this year which is so unique. Colin MacIntyre is a man who knows what he wants to create with his music and refuses to tick the boxes of expectation. The stand-out tracks on this album begin with the opener, 'Peculiar', which is a sort-of follow-up to the ever popular 'Watching Xanadu'. 'How 'Bout I Love You More' is a beautiful ascending, uplifting track and were it written by a more popular artist it would easily fit into the top 10. My other personal favourite song is 'Death Of A Scientist' which follows Dr. Kelly speaking from the afterlife. There is not much to dislike about this album, if anything. Buy it now! // 10
