Sound: The first album of an artist who would go on to sell over 80 million records. This album has still not broke 1 million, over 30 years after it's release. His first demo was in 1976, and this followed in 1978.

It contains, however, some of my favourite Prince songs.

It is very catchy funky music. What you may expect of that time in music, but all the more impressive when you know that Prince wrote all 8 tracks, 2 co-wrote, and recorded all of the instruments for the album. // 9

Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics on Prince's first album aren't particularly complicated, and the lyrical content sometimes leaves a little to be desired.

A lot of Prince's lyrics were rather sexually charged in the beginning (changed now due to his religious choices), to say the least, and concern relationships, sex and women in general. This album is no exception. That's not necessarily a bad thing for Prince, it's one of his most remembered points. But it's not particularly the lyrical content that draws you into the album.

Either way, you can't really blame him, he was a young man at the start of his career, and well... It can be expected a little, and forgiven. // 6

Impression: Considering it was his first album that he recorded and released before he had reached 20 years old, the musical genius involved in this album is surprising and the pay-off is amazing, the occasionally predictable lyrics can be sidestepped in favour of such a soulful album, particularly it's opening and closing songs, "Soft & Wet" and "I'm Yours".

If you're a fan of anything by Prince then you need to hear this album and hear what started him on his journey. It is simplistic in terms of the rest of Prince's later work but the work that went into it and made it what is it is undeniable, whether you like Prince or not - he is a talented man. // 8
