Sound: Formed by 2 members of the influential thrash band Anthrax, Charlie Benante and Scott Ian, as well as Dan Lilker (formerly of the same band), and an Anthrax roadie, Billy Milano, Stormtroopers of Death, or S.O.D. decided to make an album that would mix the somewhat similar sounds of Thrash and Hardcore and would prove to be one of the first bands to have a complete mix. Throw in ironic and politically incorrect lyrics and you have a band that is as innovative as it is a joke. Since the band was just a side project, Billy Milano would form M.O.D. (Methods Of Destruction) as a spin-off band full time. The sound is Crossover Thrash: basically your average thrash band's chops (IE: Megadeth, Overkill, Sodom) mixed with the pure ferocity and the unmatched speed of hardcore (IE: Bad Brains, Discharge, Black Flag) to a very polished and professional level. // 10
Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics, as said above, are all ironic, humorous, and politically incorrect. The topics range from the fictional "Sergeant D.", suicide, foregin people, moshing, and one song is an ode to milk, while another is "The Ballad Of Jimi Hendrix" where the band performs the beginning of the titanic Purple Haze intro riff and after, Milano just says "You're dead." and the song is over. S.O.D. are often criticized for their lyrics and have been called racists and sexist, but they're just for humorous effect, and not to be taken seriously. Overall, they're all just hilarious music that fits with the outrageous vibe you get from listening to them. // 10
Impression: One of the main albums of the crossover movement, S.O.D. probably added way more to the genre than the members ever anticipated. The best songs are actually a mix of the "joke" tracks and actually the full songs. The best full songs are "Sergeant D. and the S.O.D.", "Kill Yourself", "Speak English or Die", and "Freddy Krueger". The best joke tracks, however, are "What's that Noise", "Pre-Menstrual Princess Blues", and "The Ballad of Jimi Hendrix". Every time I hear this album it makes me laugh out loud and seriously bang my head. My only complaint about the album is sometimes you feel there are too many joke tracks and not enough actual songs, but that is their whole idea. Each track on the album is there and has a purpose. Well except for maybe "Diamonds and Rust (Extended Version)". If I lost the album or it was stolen, let's hope whoever stole it is wearing a bullet proof chest. Because Sergeant D. is coming, and that guy's on his list! // 9
