Sound: "Smart Alex" is the third studio album by English punk band, The Adicts, and was released in 1985 through Razor Records. The album's name comes from the movie "A Clockwork Orange" lead character Alex, and the sound is very strange guitar tunings and the use of different instruments. It's the classic Adicts formula of using a lot and making it a fast foray of punk ferocity, but the sound quality is more electro pop inspired rather than punk and the quality doesn't sound as good as it does on other records. // 7

Lyrics: The lyrics are inspired by "A Clockwork Orange", cricket matches, school life, and rebellious behaviour, and the lyrics match the tone of the singers - Monkey - voice which is very cockney, and have a very distinctive "Oi! Oi! Oi!" type of feel to the entire feel of the album and adds such a lovely atmosphere to the entire album, and also his voice is better in this album than in previous records, particularly in "Tokyo", and his vocals are distinctive rather than say, sounds of praise, and blend rather well with the instruments. // 9

Overall Impression: The tracklisting is as follows: 1. "Ode To Joy" - a good intro if nothing else. 2. "Smart Alex" - the title track and a standout track on the album. 3. "Troubador" - a song that references a time Monkey went to the Rolling Stones concert, and metaphors his experience there. 4. "Tokyo" - my favourite track off the album and the vocals on the entire album. 5. "California" - not very good at all, a bit of a filler track. 6. "Crazy" - middle of the road, picks up towards the end but starts off a bit boring. 7. "Bad Boy" - a song about run ins with the police in their village and a rather good track. 8. "Jelly Baby" - good and kind of an obvious song about sweets. 9. "Maybe Or Maybe Not" - below average track. 10. "Rockin Wrecker" - things pick up with a stand out track. 11. "Runaway" - the worst track on the album. 12. "You're All Fools" - a good closer. In all reality, it's a good album and you can probably have a lot of fun with it.
