On their second album, Junior Varsity sound something like the Police might have had they been a post-1980s heartland American rock band.

Sound: The Junior Varsity is an interesting blend of pop with technical rock. They may have songs in 7/8 time signatures and have alternating signatures between instruments, but they still manage to keep their vocals relatively catchy. Their guitar work is surprisingly intricate, and is very concise. Their guitar parts are the thing that stands out the most in TJV. They also delve into a bit of a "heady" song with the last track, "Saltwater Fountain". Much of their music is laced with effects, but it seems to make the music more intruiging. Their occasional exposition of keyboards also adds another dynamic to their music. // 9

Lyrics: Lyrically, TJV spans most everything. They can go from fun to just downright odd. Lead singer Asa Dawson's melody lines don't stand out much. They seem to blend right into the music. you won't find yourself singing too many of their refrains (aside from maybe "I'm home, hooray!"). Dawson's singing voice is realtively original, but a lack of catchiness doesn't help their case much. // 5

Overall Impression: The CD overall is definitely an interesting one. The first track, "Get Comfortable", gets listeners ready for a fun, pop oriented disc. But what follows doesn't quite live up to the first impression. For musicians, this is a very good CD to listen to. But I don't expect to hear too much of this CD on the radio or MTV anytime soon. // 7
