Sound: In the mid 90's Tom Petty was asked to produce and write the music soundtrack to the film, She's The One. Using several songs left over from Petty's previous album "Wildflowers" Tom wrote a few more songs, performed a few covers and recorded music with Rick Rubin and members of the Heartbreakers and came out with a low key yet interesting soundtrack album that sounds much in the vein of Wildflowers with it's exploration of feelings and emotions, experimentalism, diversity and music that can be listened to and appreciated underneath their catchy rocking facade. // 7
Lyrics and Singing: Tom didn't tap into his richest vein for the new songs he added to the ones he already had written during the Wildflowers period. The lyrics follow the themes of the film in which they were designed to fit. This recording should be considered as a project to accompany the film rather than a proper studio release although you don't have to see the film at all to enjoy the music. // 5
Impression: I recommend this release to Petty fans who know and love what makes Tom Petty such a great musician and already own a large number of his albums. Most are drenched with the familiar rock and pop stylings typical of Tom and the Heartbreakers. The covers "Asshole" and "Change The Locks" are done well and fit in with Petty's originals. Like the man in black Johnny Cash, whom Petty and the Heartbreakers would next work with as his studio band, Petty righ away puts his own stamp the cover versions, especially on Beck's "Asshole"
Overall, my favourite songs are the stunning opening track, "Walls", the extended jam that is "Supernatural Radio", the good time rock of "Climb That Hill" and a heartfelt dedication of love to his soon to be wife Dana "Angel Dream". I love that I can reach out and listen to a Tom Petty project that is a little different and less familiar to the consciousness than his more popular studio albums. // 6
