Sound: The 1996 Ween output, 12 Country Golden Greats, features a fairly simple country-based approach for an entire album. While the album lacks a wide range of musical genres (unlike many Ween albums), this Ween effort is still incredibly convincing and doesn't get boring quickly. From the opening track "I'm Holding You" all the way through to the closer, "Fluffy", listeners are bombarded with insane lyrics and catchy country jams that would normally sound perfect for the genre without the humorous lyrical matter that floods the album. // 9
Lyrics and Singing: So what if the lyrics aren't the band's strong point? They don't have to be as thought provoking or deep as some bands because Ween is a band that doesn't take themselves seriously. With song titles like "Japanese Cowboy" and "Piss Up a Rope", it is evident the band is willing to sacrifice mainstream attention to get some giggles out of the pure stupidity of these lyrics. Many a funny tale is told throughout the album in convincing coutry style, even though some songs feature Gene Ween's bizarre and quirky vocals. // 9
Impression: As I'm sure the band meant it to be, the album only contains 10 songs, not 12, showing that the Ween brothers have a great sense of humor about their music. If you randomly heard most of these songs without hearing the lyrics, you'd assume they were regular old country songs, minus the zany lyrics Ween have become infamous for. A great buy for those who are looking for an album that is incredibly unique and won't grow old after mutliple listens. // 9
