J. Rockett Audio Designs: Allan Holdsworth Signature Boost/OD
The J. Rockett Allan Holdsworth Signature Model OD/Boost is an effects pedal for the electric guitar. Much like the man, for whom this little unit was designed for and christened after, the Holdsworth OD/Boost pedal is certainly interesting.

Ease of Use: The J. Rockett Allan Holdsworth Signature Model OD/Boost is an effects pedal for the electric guitar. Much like the man, for whom this little unit was designed for and christened after, the Holdsworth OD/Boost pedal is certainly interesting. It's also a bit amorphous and slippery when it comes to reviewing this rascal. However, what would one expect from anything bearing the intimidatingly unique and inscrutable master's name? It's not that it's such a complicated piece of technology. Both in design and usability, it is extremely simple. What is difficult, is judging it, because this is one of those devices that varies quite dramatically in different hands and rigs. // 8

Sound: Okay, I love the pedal and I'm a big fan of Mr. Holdsworth. Now that is out of the way, so... The way it works is that it is divided into its two main functions. It has a Drive side and a Boost side. The Drive controls include: Volume, gain, bass and treble, which only control the drive side unless you cascade the boost into the drive. The Boost controls are: Boost and two switches. One switches the emphasis between low's and high's while the other lets the player boost fat, clean or treble related aspects of their tone. And, like the Drive controls, the Boost controls only effect its own side (the Boost side), unless you cascade the boost into the overdrive. // 10

Reliability & Durability: How does it sound? Well, that depends. I already said that I love it and so do many others. That being said, I could really see someone having trouble with this pedal. It sounds great with many different amp and guitar configurations but one needs to understand what the Boost and Drive are actually doing to your tone. You can push your amp so hard with this pedal that it might be a little confusing, at first, to figure out how to achieve the tone you're looking for. So, while it's easy to use, it might be a bit difficult to comprehend whether it's the effect you want to spend your hard earned digital debt units on... Just do a little research and you should be fine. // 9

Overall Impression: All in all, the pedal is incredible and well worth the $230.00. Especially, considering that you are really getting two pedals in one. It is extremely versatile and the controls allow you to go from creamy to crunchy to crystal clean in an instant. Not only that, you don't have to reside in the abstruse wilderness of fusion jazz, to appreciate the J. Rockett Allan Holdsworth Signature Model OD/Boost either. Many blues and rock players get as much out of it as Holdsworth's devoted and stretched-out legato exhausted fans. Check one out and enjoy!
