So, I've listened to the demo on the Rocktron website and the reviews here say excellent things. What I want to know is how heavy can it get? I mainly play thrash/death/grind, so I need something that can really get a crushing sound. From what I hear, it can get quite distorted which is good, but how heavy can it go?

does this pedal sound clear? i mean, does it sound similar to a studio sound?
like cos some pedals sound flat.

Any solid state users have this pedal?

Ibanez SZ320 -> SD-1 -> Silver Dragon -> Metal Planet -> Rampage -> Peavey Rockmaster head. Now, I have so many distortions because I use them differently and they sound much different from each other. Sometimes, I'll use the tube portion of the Silver Dragon with my Rampage or Metal Planet to get a nice brutal tone, a raw thrash or death metal tone. The SD-1 is set mainly for a semi-clean boost with a bit of gain, (20% at most), and I may kick it one with the two for solos. The solid state pedals are set low gain (2-4), and most of the distortion is coming from the Silver Dragons tube, SD-1 and Rockmaster amp head. Finally, using the Silver Dragon with the Slayer engaged, and the SD-1, and I have a great black metal tone for my amp, which is it's main selling point. I generally have most of my distortion coming from my tubes and pickups, and very little gain from my solidstate portion of the Silver Dragon, SD-1, or other two Rocktron pedals. This makes for a much more natural distortion, similar but not quite like a loud tube amp. Great stuff comes from Rocktron, and I think I may get a Zombie if I find it used somewhere.

yeah, i've got a line 6 amp, it really warms up the sound. try it out first anyway, but you'll probably love it.

as heavy as you like, i play everything from jazz to death metal and this does it all. well not jazz but it could do fusion type stuff like satriani or liquid tension experiment. but trust me, it gets PLENTY heavy.

Ok, I have a question. Does this sound good on a tube amp? I'm guessing it does, but just making sure. I have a Peavey Valveking 100 Head and the distortion isn't enough for me so I'm looking for a new pedal.

I was thinking about getting a nice Fender amp for cleans and pairing it up with one of these.

Bad idea. Although this pedal is 'tube', you won't get that real power tube saturation that everybody is looking for. My advice - go for a low wattage tube amp that is reasonably gainy on it's own (Peavey Windsor Studio anybody?) and pair it up with a nice OD or this pedal. Use them in combination and you should be able to get both sorts of tube distortion.

It's amazing! I'm just figuring a pretty sound but I can't guess it. Can somebody help me, how can I get the new-school heavy metal sound of:
- Metallica - Invisible Kid (intro) ,or
- metallica - Some kind of monster (break part), or maybe
- Rammstein - Amerika ("this is not a love song..." part)
In this parts of these songs the sound of the guitar is perfect. So I want to get this sound. It's similar to Slipknot's sound. So please help me to figure this cool sound! thanx

will this work as a preamp? i run my guitar into a Boss BR-600 multitrack and use the built in COSM effects.

would i be able to go guitar-->silver dragon---> cabinet simulator on recorder? or is this not intended to be used as a preamp?

I HAVE A ROCKTRON SILVER DRAGON IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION FOR SALE! I RECEIVED IT AS A GIFT, BUT IT'S TOO HEAVY FOR ME. I WANT TO SELL IT FOR AN ENGLISH MUFF'N. ONCE AGAIN, IT IS IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION. I REMOVED THE RUBBER FEET AND PUT VELCRO ON THE BACK SO IT WOULD STAY ON MY PEDALBOARD. I STILL HAVE THE RUBBER FEET, WHICH CAN BE EASILY ATTACHED. ALSO INCLUDES POWER SUPPLY.

E-MAIL ME AT jclievense@insightbb.com WITH "ROCKTRON SILVER DRAGON" AS THE SUBJECT. I AM CURRENTLY ASKING $100 BUT I'M WILLING TO GO LOWER

THANKS!
-Jeff

Okay... what I can't really figure out is... can this do MODERN metal? Huge respect to the bands that influenced it (Pantera, Metallica, Maiden, etc.)... but it seems that wherever I go trying to find info on this thing, people praise it but they all play Maiden and other 80's metal. I'm looking for something that can do Metalcore, Deathcore, Grind, and Heavy Rock. I'm talking about the more scooped and heavy-as-f*#& tones that you get from bands like Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, All That Remains, As Blood Runs Black, All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, Bloodjinn, Darkest Hour, Demon Hunter, It Dies Today...

Can this pedal do THAT type of stuff?

LoG doesn't use that much gain these days =/
Also, see the above comment about it handling Amon Amarth (evidently though, it helps to have a decent tube amp to use it with).

I had one of these. I really liked it before I started to get an ear for tone. And it wasn't the most durable pedal either, the aluminum housing scratches easily and mine just flat out stopped working for no apparent reason. Didn't take it anywhere, didn't abuse it, just one day ceased to function. I ended up taking it apart and using it for spare parts. Some points, 1.The tube in it doesn't do jack for your tone, it takes way more power than the pedal is pushing to make that tube do anything at all, 2.That orange glow you see coming from the little window with the tube? That's not the tube, there's a orange LED mounted underneath the tube to make it looks like it's actually doing something. It's also noisy as all hell, lots of hissing and popping feedback if you run both sections of it at the same time.
After it crapped out I replaced it with a boss ML-2 and I haven't looked back, my rig sounds exponentially better.
If you want a REAL tube powered distortion pedal you're going to have to pay for one, and they aren't cheap.

you are telling us you got an ear for tone but then you praise the boss ml-2?
the metal core-pedal is pure bullshit, the most undefined tone & sound i ever heard...well maybe not as bad as a behringer pedal

Really? Maybe you should try adjusting the settings instead of throwing all the knobs clockwise as far as they'll go like a pudwacker.
If you bought a silver dragon I'm sorry, there are better pedals that can be bought for a few dollars more or even a few less. I suggest the Blackstar HT-DISTX if you want a tube pedal. All you're doing with the silver dragon is taking a good amp and making it sound bad.

I really love this pedal, I think its up there with blackstar. I will admit the blackstar is a little better but I wouldnt waste the extra money. The silver dragon does definitely kill any boss distortion anyday and can pretty much get any distortion you want
