Ease of Use: This is a pretty complex pedal and it took me a while to get used to it. There are five knobs, a wet-dry mix, a digital/analogue mix, feedback (amount of repeats), modulation and ratio/delay time. They are all pretty self-explanatory except for digital/analogue, which mixes the delay between pure analogue(via a bucket brigade chip) and digital delays. It should be noted this pedal is technically not fully analogue, the signal always goes through the digital part, but the analogue signal is sent through the bucket brigade. Personally I think this is a good hybrid of the two as it allows for analogue tone as well as Digital Delay times. There are two footswitches, one for on/off and the other for tap tempo. Two smaller switches switch between true bypass and trailing repeats, the latter of which uses a good buffer, and the other switches between delay time and ratio, changing the use of the delay time/ratio knob. At the back, there are two outputs for use in stereo, a Feedback foot pedal input and a wet out/insert jack. You can use this as a wet output or effects loop. There is also a 20-second loop feature. For what it's worth, the manual is very informative, if slightly hyperbolic, even going as far as describing the results of using different effects in the loop. I'll give this pedal a 7 as it can be intimdating at first, but with experience becomes fairly simple. // 7
Sound: I use this with an Ibanez RGA42T and a Stagg strat copy, through a Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz, DigiTech Whammy, Crybaby, Marshall Regenerator and Reflector before a Chord CG-30. This pedal sounds great clean or with distortion, I generally leave the W/D and D/A at about midway as I find the full analogue setting to be muddy and unclear. The Modulation is better than I expected, ranging from a subtle chorus to a Strawberry Fields Forever style Vibrato warble. By turning the delay time to it's lowest setting, you can use this as a pretty nice chorus pedal, although of course it's somewhat inconvenient to change all the settings. The analogue mode adds a nice warmth to sounds, it sounds great when used with a Wah and arppehiated chords.
The delay times go up to 20 seconds using tap tempo, but I find this fairly useless and stay within the delay knobs 3-second range. The feedback knob gets chaotic turned to max, with huge amounts of feedback.
The effects loop can be used to create a delayed effect, for example, you could use a Whammy pedal to make the delayed signal an octave lower. Personally, I'd argue the inconvience renders this idea slightly pointless, but it's cool to have nonetheless and allows you to create some really weird sounds.
Whilst I don't really use loops, it is still useful to use a loop as you can adjust certain parts of the pedal, i.e. you can record a loop then adjust the modulation or D/A blend to see the effect they have, as well as any pedal you have in the effects loop. You cannot use the loop and delay at the same time, when you play over the loop, your signal will not have delay on it.
I will give this pedal a 9, as the analogue modes can get fairly muddy and don't sound that great, altough that could be my amp. // 9
Reliability & Durability: The casing design is solid and the pedal has a reasurring weight to it, I highly doubt it will break anytime soon. A small issue is that the delay time seems to reset to about 1 second after so long of the pedal recieving no power. For this fault, I will give it a 9. // 9
Overall Impression: I chose this pedal because of it's features, such as an effects loop, and have not been dissappointed. For someone looking for a basic delay, I think a cheaper alternative like the Boss Digital Delay would be better, this is more of an experimentative pedal and so for me personally, the price is justified. It can acheive a great range of tones allowing it to be useful in a variety of genres and can create some unique tones, like a clean tone with a low volume distorted delay and allowing my Whammy to sound more bass-like when played through the analogue mode(D/A to fully analogue, Delay time to minimum). It is a pedal I strongly recommend for someone looking for a high-end delay pedal. // 10
