Canada (Guelph), Janury 19, 2012 Review

Canada, Guelph, Peter Clark Hall, January 19th. The show was everything I love about rock and roll. It was loud, energetic, and rambunctious.

Sound: Max Kerman is one of the best young singers I have seen in a long time. With a sweetly gruff timbre and a good range, the man just oozes talent. The band played the same instruments for all but two song when Kerman, the lead vocalist as well as rhythm guitarist, dropped his electric guitar in favour of an acoustic ("Agent Zero") and just a microphone ("You Make My Dreams Come True", a Hall and Oates cover, but more on that later). The sound quality was fairly decent, the only problem was in the mixing, especially during the opening set by The Darcy's, where the vocals were completely drowned out. // 9

Perfomance: The audience was RIVETED. I went with a friend who had never heard of the band before, but "It seemed like a fun thing to go to", and he is still raving about it weeks later. Taking every cue from Kerman, 90% of the audience sang along to every word. The other 10% were too busy jumping up and down. God I love concerts.

The band played all of their most popular songs, as well as some of the more obscure cuts from their two albums, "Michigan Left" and "Jackson Square". They also broke out some 80's style with the Aforementioned Hall and Oates cover, which had so much energy wrapped up into it that it seemed ready to explode.

One moment of note was during the introduction to "Deadlines" when Kerman lead the audience in a rousing chorus of "This little light of mine" while encouraging the audience to bring out their cell phones to "show them the light". The night ended off with a raucous rendition of John Lennon, a treat to any fan. // 10

Impression: Canada, Guelph, Peter Clark Hall, January 19th. The Darcy's opened up. Pretty good warmup for the main attraction. The show was everything I love about rock and roll. It was loud, energetic, and rambunctious. There's something about that kind of small venue that really opens a band up to their fans. It felt like we were in on this wonderful secret that was just waiting to get out. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer, it was a $22 (Canadian) well spent. I will be attending any and all gigs I can find from now on. // 10
