Sound: The mix was top notch, even back where I was in the 400's outside the pavilion. I've never been a fan of the sound at the Molson Amphitheater, but the sound was nice and crisp at this show. A common issue with Motley Crue is Nikki's bass is often far too low in the mix, however that issue wasn't present at this show. The mix was a perfect blend of Nikki's bass, Mick's guitar, Tommy's drums, and Vince's vocals. The first time I saw Motley Crue was on the Route Of All Evil tour in '06, opening for Aerosmith. I wasn't at all impressed with Vince's voice, he sounded really washed up, even worse than on the Carnival Of Sins tour. However, his vocals were top notch last night at Crue Fest. In fact, I'd go as far to say it's the best he's sounded since the Dr. Feelgood tour. All the issues Vince has had in recent years (Forgetting lyrics, stuttering, missing some of the high notes) were all absent in the band's set last night. // 10
Perfomance: The crowd was really going on all cylinders all night, one of the most energetic crowds I've ever been in. While the liquor suspension dampened the mood for some of the earlier bands (For some people, not me personally), when the Crue came out and Vince announced to the crowd that they were filming the Crue Fest DVD that night, everyone really started going apeshit for them. The stage set was really spectacular. The stage was supposed to look like a bombed-out Los Angeles, complete with flickering Hollywood letters, from which pyro blasts erupted during many a song. The show kicked off with their traditional closer song, Kickstart My Heart. Vince came out, running wild on the stage, pumping his fists in the air, and in general, acting like he was still in his 20's. The show was just hit after hit, I'm a huge Crue fan and would have loved a few more obscure songs, but seeing as I've only seen them once before I didn't mind. They went into Wild Side next, super high enegry with fireworks going off left and right. By the end of the first 2 songs, there was quite a layer smoke in the air underneath the pavilion. Shout At The Devil was next. They did the '97 remix version, which I've always found superior to the original. Again, lots of pyro (Mushroom clouds going up behind the Hollywood sign), and lots of crowd interaction. Vince talked to the crowd a bit, stating that we were being filmed for the new Motley Crue DVD, and the crowd really kicked the energy up a notch farther than before. They played the title track off the new album next, Saint's Of Los Angeles. Probably my favorite song of the whole set, the band was super tight, and the song translated well Live. The singers from Sixx: AM, Trapt, Papa Roach and Buckcherry all came out for the last chorus, which was cool. Mick Mars played a guitar solo for a while, culminating in the band jamming on Voodoo Child for a few minutes, before launching into Live Wire. Live Wire, again, had lots of crowd participation, in fact, the crowd was so wild Vince didn't even sing the scond verse, he let the crowd take over. They did Sick Love Song, which was the low point of the set crowd wise. No one really seemed to know the song, except for the die hards scattered throughout the venue. They did another new song next, Motherf--ker Of The Year. Suprisingly, a lot of the audience seemed to know this song. Again, another new song that translated really well Live. Tommy came out to talk to the crowd for a while, ranting about how the Molson got their liquor liscense suspended, and he passed his bottle of Jagger Meister through the crowd. He brought out the Tit E. Cam for a few minutes, and after the girls got warmed up to it, it got pretty wild. Vince came back onstage with an acoustic, and they did Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away). I think it was the only song without any pyro, but, again, it was a big song for crowd participation. The hits kept coming with Same Ol' Situation, another one with lots of crowd participation. Not much to say about those two, just it was really cool to get so many people singing along at shows (Unlike most of the shows I've seen this summer). Nikki made everyone sit down for a few minutes while he talked, and had everyone jump out of the seats when Primal Scream started, cause it would "look really f--king badass on the DVD!". I never really cared for Primal Scream, but Vince sounded especially good on it last night.Looks That Kill had an extend drum and bass/crowd participation intro, however the song itself didn't seem to be very well recieved by the crowd. Girls Girls Girls saw Vince as wild as he was on the Girls Girls Girls tour, revving an imaginary motorcylce while running from one end of the stage to the other, never stopping to catch a breath. Dr. Feelgood closed the set, with massive amounts of pyro, including fireworks shooting out over the crowd. Vince sang Dr. Feelgood, honest to god, better than I've ever heard HIM sing it before. It was perfect. Anyways, after a lengthy Encore wait, they came back out and did a new arrangement of Home Sweet Home, once again with a real grand piano, and with a band jam at the beginning. Due to rain, mmost people's lighter's got extinguished (Which I bet will look funny on the DVD! ). Classic Crue, Vince sang it reqlly heartfelt, and Mick's solo was full of emotion. The show was really almost perfect, the only thing I would have changed is added a couple more new songs instead of the Tit E. Cam. // 9
Impression: The show was at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto, Canada on August 28th, 2008. The opening bands were Trapt, Sixx: AM, Papa Roach and Buckcherry. I can't say much for any of the opening bands which I saw. They were just that; opening bands. The show was overall very enjoyable, especially considering I've had a stomach flu all week and could hardly get out of bed the morning of the show. The only aspect of the show that got on my nerves was that (probably) due to the alcohol suspension, there was a massive amount of pot in the crowd. And pot doesn't hit the lungs very well when you're sick. I found myself stepping out quite frequently during the first 4 bands. Luckily, I didn't have to for any of Motley Crue's set. Our tickets were $35. We were in the last section of seated, in front of the lawn. The show was deffinitely worth the money; in fact I wish had spent more on tickets had I known they would be filming. Motley Crue have always been a band you go to see just to have fun. Last night was no exception, but there was deffinitely a bonus of having the band performing top notch. I can't wait to see them again on their winter tour! // 10
