Sound: Napalm Death hit the stage like a bomb, with Barney blasting out his vocals in a fury. Then Barney stopped, smiled, and spoke to the crowd about peace. Then the fury began again!
They didn’t let up for the rest of their set. They were supported by Dying Fetus, who made an apology for their sound quality (which was a subtle insult to the sound guys), and even though it wasn’t perfect, no one in the crowd was complaining. // 7
Perfomance: The show exceeded my expectations, because Barney was such a gracious host. They played songs from all over their almost 30 year career, including Scum, Suffer The Children and their stuff from their latest album, like On The Brink Of Extinction and Time Waits For No Slave. Their cover of Nazi Punks f--k Off was introduced by Barney as an "anti-fascist song that was originally done by a little band from South California" and it was a massive crowd-pleaser. And that’s what leads to the concert being so great. Barney, no doubt needing to take a breather from the relentless vocal work, explained the meanings behind the songs that were coming up and showed a great sense of just enjoying being on stage.
Napalm Death are a politically charged band, and they didn’t back down from their views throughout the show - even if not all of the crowd seemed to be on top of the issues they were expressing. Barney (a vegetarian) told a concert goer, who gave him a gift bag of chocolates or something, that he would enjoy them over a glass of soy-milk after the show. When Barney was saying that it’s fine if you want to believe in Casper the Friendly Ghost or God, that’s great, but there’s no evidence for either of them so it’s bullshit – a dude yelled out "Whoo, Satan!" – which sort of missed the point. And when they spoke about gay rights and being a woman in a man’s world to a crowd of metalheads, I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through their minds. However, my mind was finding it awesome that they continued the progressive message from their songs through their banter with the audience. // 9
Impression: It was held at the Marrickville Factory, near Newtown, Sydney Australia – 4th of September 2010. Napalm Death were supported by Dying Fetus and Deamon Foetal Harvest.
Barney's interaction with the audience and unrelenting brutality of Napalm Death's live show were the definite highlight, with the only downer being Dying Fetus complaining about the sound. The show was definitely worth the $60 and I’ll be there the next time they come to Sydney. // 8
