USA (Atlanta), August 13, 2003 Review

artist: ringo starr date: 04/27/2004 category: live concerts
USA (Atlanta), August 13, 2003
The most unforgettable parts of the show were the drum solos from both Ringo and Sheila E., the tributes to George Harrison, and Ringo poking fun of his own songwriting.

Sound: Overall, good sound. The venue's location (very near a residential neighborhood) really prevented the full potential of the sound to be reached, but still pretty good. Basic set up consisted of a pair of electric guitars, electric bass, keyboard, and two drum sets. Every member of the band sang a few songs while Ringo himself took over vocals for the majority of the show (Band members sang the songs made famous by their own groups, Ringo sang a few of his bigger solo songs and many Beatle songs). Ringo's vocal ability has greatly improved over the years. // 8

Perfomance: Ringo covers about every part of his career over the course of the show. Performances of Act Naturally, You're Sixteen, Yellow Submarine, The No-No Song, Don't Pass Me By and I Wanna Be Your Man were definately the highlights of Ringo's performance. Surprisingly, the drummer of the biggest band in history makes use of a second drummer (in this case Sheila E.) on his All-Starr Band Tours. That is quickly proven to be a very good choice as Sheila steals the show with numerous drum solos and even a drummer's dual with Ringo himself. The drums are definately a focus of the show, but they come in second to the pair of tributes to ex-Beatle George Harrison. The first comes when the band, minus Ringo, performs George's "Something" acoustically. Later, Ringo rejoins the band for a performance of his own tribute to George, a self-penned song referencing the titles of many of George's own songs. // 10

Impression: The show took place at Atlanta's Chastain Park Ampitheatre on August 13, 2003. Ticket price wasn't too bad, about $57.00 for pretty good seats. There was no opening act but the show did last quite some time without an opener. The venue was the biggest problem, as it isn't as good acoustically as some other smaller venues nearby and sound ordinances limit the volume of the show. Beatles fans will definitely enjoy this show more than the casual music fan just looking for a show. The most unforgettable parts of the show were the drum solos from both Ringo and Sheila E., the tributes to George Harrison, and Ringo poking fun of his own songwriting (in reference to the song "Don't Pass Me By"). I would definitely go to their next show. // 10
