Behemoth's album was their best to date, and an amazing one at that. How it can have the same rating as a Megadeath or Shadows Fall album is beyond me. Then again the review scale on this site is always oddly skewed.

Good article though.

I think it would be more oddly skewed if you gave ratings based simply because of the band, not the music. Incidentally, Behemoth aren't anything that awesome.

Endgame isnt a surprise, everyones gonna so how 'no one understaaaaands' Mustardstain. But skills good. Immortal, I could never listen to becuase all black metal is roughly the same and the news about Ghaal is surprising too, I thought he would've given up last year.

HarvesterofPain :
Hopefully, Gus G will write some great material for Ozzy. Maybe I'm just too used to seeing and hearing Wylde up there with him, but Gus didn't strike me as memorable at the Blizzcon show.

I completely agree that Endgame is very front-loaded. The album was all-around decent and I think the review was fair, but it started to trail off after the first three or four tracks. Oh, and while I'm talking Endgame, 44 Minutes was a badass track IMO.

And I need to check out this new PL album. I'm not sure how I missed that it was out. I must be spending too much time in the pit XD...

Arch Enemy's "new" album is a compilation of re-recorded songs and it interests me little. I review new releases and don't do re-recordings, cover albums or live albums (yes, I know I've done in the past when this article was in its infancy).

Dethklok is a joke band and I don't see the purpose of putting it here, nevermind bothering to put my dislike of them into words.

As for all the albums that people are asking about in the comments, some make the cut, some don't. Can't do 'em all.

POSTED: 09/25/2009 - 02:19 pm / quote |
Down :
I was actually quite unimpressed by All Shall Fall. To me it lost a lot of the balls Immortal has gained over the years and was definitely not an improvement over Sons of Northern Darkness. It actually made me think a little of Satyricon, and the way they lost their edge...

Still having difficulty choosing between Nocturnal and Deflorate for best TBDM album. Deflorate is more accomplished in terms of technical skill, but I think Nocturnal overall had better songs. Having said that, Necropolis and I Will Return are two of their best songs to date, and I was really impressed with Trevor's lyrics and especially how he delivered them.

Evangelion definitely dragged on a little, but the first few tracks are very excellent. I prefer The Apostasy, though. It just felt a little more epic to me.

And since there's no Day of Mourning review here, I'll just throw my two cents in and say Alexandre Pelletier is a freaking god on drums. Eulogy is my favourite track simply for his drumming in that song. He starts off with a slower blast that he combines his other hand with to turn into a marching piece, he brilliantly throws in some highlights of the bass drum by itself for some extra groove, and he layed down gravity blasts so effortlessly I didn't even notice he was doing them until they had passed and I had to listen again to make sure I was hearing right. I don't know how to feel about the missing pig squeals on this album (not a single one!). They've always irked me as a fact that they are a core element of deathcore and as such were overused by every band on the scene years ago, but I've gotten so used to them in DI's sound that it almost feels incomplete without them. There's a certain amount of extra melody to some of the guitar riffs which sticks a bit more in my brain versus the catchiness of Ills of Modern Man mostly coming from the rhythms of the notes. There is an intensity I absolutely love in the last 30 seconds or so of Diva of Disgust, highlighted by a few seconds of full speed bass drum amidst the frantic blasting and trem-picked riffs. The last track, Sleepless, is certainly an odd one for DI. It basically sounds like the ending of Fainted Blue Ornaments, but much slower and calmer. It's hard to think of as a DI song, but regardless who the song is by, it's still a good one. Overall, though, The Ills of Modern Man was much more enjoyable to listen to.

And now Gaahl can spend more time in the world of fashion.

Yay for Megadeth, TBDM, and Behemoth!

I think Gus G is wasting his time with Ozzy. Ozzy can hardly sing anymore, Gus isn't gonna go very far with him.

Can't wait for Keep of Kalessin and As I Lay Dying. And while we're at it, I'm psyched for Swallow the Sun and BTBAM.

Arsis and Dark Tranquillity also have albums coming out next year, supposedly.

Glad to hear Zakk is doing well.

RP why do you not review EVERY album that anyone on this site is interested in??? XD seriously guys, one human being can NOT listen to every metal album that comes out in a month, give them all an impartial listen, and keep them straight. I think this guy does a great job, still my favorite column ever.

Hmmm... I really need to find TBDM soon, and Immortal too, I wasn't sure what to expect from them but 9.5 definitely means something (at least from RP, every other reviewer on this site seems to hand out 9s and 10s like candy). Paradise Lost, too... they are my go-to doom metal band, and by "step back," do you mean to say, Icon?

Few more thoughts: I love Dethklok! Haha seriously, as long as you keep in mind what the point is, it is really enjoyable music. I like them much more than Shadows Fall, for example. They just never clicked with me... And HUGELY anticipating Between the Buried and Me next month. I'm like twitching. Colors gets better with every listen, and BtBaM would have to make pretty much the best album of all time to top it.

How about you get off your high horse for 2 seconds and realize that 99% of metal bands today are "joke bands", just not intentionally. Dethklok just has the balls to poke fun itself while rising to the forefront of a genre polluted with a bunch of talentless teenage monkeys who drop tune and bang away on the first 5 frets.

I love metal, but I don't take myself so seriously that i can't be entertained by humorous lyrics accompanied by some of the tastiest riffs and solo's i've heard in a while.

Agreed. I love Dethklok. Funny thing is, they write better riffs jokingly than alot of the bands on this page write seriously. Just because a band has joking lyrics doesn't make it bad music. Music isn't completely reliant on lyrics (unless you count rap as music, which I do not).

And the show is awesome.

1. God why don't we get someone get on here and whine about every other band not being on here? Does anyone on earth have the time to review every metal release every month? I nominate you.

2. 3 out of the 8 albums this month are death metal. If this column is "allmost completly" about death metal then I guess you are "almost 32 years old"

Entertainment and quality do not necessarily go hand in hand. I do get entertained by Dethklok, but as far as artistic value goes, they hold about zilch. If that sounds as if I'm still on a high horse, please get over me.

Dethklok's lyrics are deeper than alot of actual bands in the same genre. I mean yeah, it's "funny" but I wouldn't really say that cannibal corpse isn't. dethklok often goes beyond just imagery and humor and will make a bold statement about society or the music industry.

I especially like the lyrics to detharmonic. Funny? Yes. But also, it's about greed in the music industry.

someone mentioned sonata arctica...

^Oh if anyone was wondering, the new Sonata Arctica... if you were a fan of their old stuff, I'm not gonna say it's good, not gonna say it's bad, I haven't even decided yet. But it is most certainly interesting. Coming from these guys, this album just seems so weird.

I like how they're beginning to evolve away from just straight up power metal into something that's everything we like about powermetal but less cliche and cookie cutter. Like Kamelot. Kamelot is the best evolved band I have ever had the pleasure of listening to the discography of.

Epica's new album? I can tell exactly what's gonna be like. More bitching about religion. Just straight up constant bitching about religion over top of what sadly could have been an excellent sound for a band if only they would explore more subject material than "religion sucks." OK WE GET IT! So religion sucks!

Musically I didn't like the direction their last album took. I like heavier music, but i think in this case it threw their sound off balance.

I hate the fact that After Forever split this year. imo, they own Epica in every way. Invisible Circles ftw.

Yeah, albums here are brutally overrated... Pretty much anything reviewed gets a minimum of 7.

I was really impressed with Behemoth, The Waste, Megadeth, and BDM. Evangelion is an amazing release for anybody who likes blackened death metal, or death metal at that. Fast blasting, awesome solos, and dark vocals from Nergal. Massive Aggressive seemed like it wasn't long enough even though it's longer than Waste Em All and Hazardous Mutation. Endgame is thrash metal at its best. Deflorate blew me away.. amazing solos and great drumming from Shannon Lucas. I still need to check out the new Immortal.

No way, Pete is always very strict with his reviews, this is possibly the most positive TMIM i've read, very often most of the albums only just scrape a 6. I don't always agree with his comments but it seems like this month was goooood. Definitely going to have to check out the new Immortal album

I'm also surprised by Evangelion getting an 8. In fact, to me the article sounded like a weak attempt at minimizing the album's quality because Behemoth is a mature band with solid commercial success. The random analysis telling us how "the last songs fail to achieve the quality of the first three" sounds like utter bullsh*t to me, considering it includes tracks such as "The Seed ov I" or especially "Lucifer".

I'm not a fanboy, but Evangelion is up there with the most brutal productions Black and Death Metal have ever created, an excellent mix between Death Metal's aggressiveness and Black Metal's sinister mood. Plus, it features flawless musicianship from all the band members.

Still haven't checked Endgame, by the way, going to give it a listen right now.

As for Ozzy hiring Gus to be his new guitarists, it's pretty old news....well, maybe just for me, I cant remember how long ago I heard this, but Gus and Bob from Firewind are buddies of mine, and Bob told me that Gus was about 99% in the Ozzy family...but he also told me that while he's commited to Ozzy, he's still 110% commited to Firewind, so however long his stint is with Ozzy, I wish him the best of luck and I hope he has fun! And I'm looking forward to some new Firewind material!

@ReviewerPete

Slamming dethklok by saying they have zero artistic value puts your reviewing of music in question. Dethklok is an incredibly talented band with intricate layers of guitar and one of the best Metal drummers (Gene Hoglan). The new dethalbum is much more serious on their lyrics and has to be one of the best composed albums i have heard. Saying that they have zero artistic value is a false statement and for me, that discredits the rest of your reviews. Give The Dethalbum II a shot, it is one of the most impressive albums of the year.

Have u guys ever read past reviews? I mean this guy has done this job for like 2 yrs now (more actually).. I wonder how you'd feel after listening to some "crappy" album and then having to review it! Notice "crappy" in quotes coz that's an opinionated expression..
But what the hell! Whatever that is said to you guys will bounce right back this way.. so screw you guys and I'd be glad to see one of you come up to do this very job month after month and with the same enthusiasm..
And I for one, just cannot understand how someone can review anything without being opinionated!? Yeah, these TMIM articles are focused more towards Death, Black and Doom metal. That's basically coz the reviewer seems a fan of that sub-genre. He still does a brilliant job of reviewing almost every sub-genre there is in metal..
So stop complaining and grow up. This is hard work and I'm atleast glad someone's doing it.

Dimmu Borgir has split with vocalist/bassist Vortex and guitarist Mustis.

Ok, did they get the name mixed up or the title? If they split with a guitarist, it's not Mustis. If they split with Mustis, it's not a guitarist.

Behemoth's album was their best to date, and an amazing one at that. How it can have the same rating as a Megadeath or Shadows Fall album is beyond me. Then again the review scale on this site is always oddly skewed.

Good article though.

Evangelion was their most derivative album to date. Utterly worthless.
