Agree with Nostradamus. Can't get into that album. Hopefully in time I enjoy it.

I didn't think Nostradamus was all that great, but it's worth a 4 at least. Watershed, however, really is an epic album. Love their new lead pieces and progressive riffs!

Nice reviews though.

(for the record, Watershed should've gotten higher than a 7.5)

Jazz/metal is not my description (omg thief!!1) but I can't really think of a better one. They're progressive as hell, very weird to say the least. Hardcore and experimental influences, electronica stuff...very cool, very weird. Recommended.

That BTBAM DVD will win. I also kinda agree with the reviewer on Opeth. As far as I know they've never released a bad, or even sub-par song, but they only have a few that I'd categorize as more-than-excellent. Regardless, they are one of my favourite bands because I know that I can put on any song at random and it will win.

I gave Tyr a favorable review in the May issue.

And summer is not a bad season for metal as a whole, but it's a fairly dry season in terms of releases. May-June-July are pretty dull (with a few exceptions) after the onslaught of releases that litter the months leading up to the festival season.

Watershed was brilliant. Probably my favorite Opeth album, honestly. It's better than 7.5.

However, you were pretty much dead on with Nostradamus. There was a big hype and I got all excited, then I listened to it on "The Leak" and was extremely disappointed. Thank God I didn't waste money on the triple-vinyl thing like I was going to, Priest has let me down for the first time.

No one needs to hear how you feel about Trivium. You're entitled to your own opinion, but I mean c'mon man keep that shit to yourself.

I really hope Trivium's album is more like Ascendancy. The Crusade wasn't terrible, but it didn't really have many standout tracks other than The Crusade. Also, I thought I saw All That Remains in the previous This Month in Metal article. I can't wait for their new album, although how they can possibly top The Fall of Ideals is beyond me...

Among everyone I've talked to about Watershed, we've all agreed that it doesn't take it's effect on you until 15+ listens. The first time we listened through, it was a resounding "What the hell is this shit?"; the second and third times it was "Damn, there's some wicked stuff in here!", and it kept building like that up until the point where we all regard it as Opeth's best album to date. It takes time to grow on you, but looking at the number of times I've listened to each Opeth album, Watershed is at 87, beating Still Life by 6. It just takes a hold of you and you don't want it to let go when you're listening.

Heir Apparent > Every song ever.

flawlessme :
Watershed gets a 9.5 in my opinion. I'm knocking .5 off for Porcelain Heart. Hessian Peel is out of this world. You've gotta give it multiple listens for it to hit you. Heir Apparent is still my favourite off the album though.

To add to that, a lot of the "reviewers" on this site are very fond of inflating scores. A 7.5 is a good score for any album in my opinion, but you see albums getting absolutely slated on this site but then given scores of 6 or 7

Likewise you see 8's 9's and 10's being given out like AK's at a Taliban convention. Use a little more tact when giving out ratings please.

Some "metal" fans don't really make much sense to me at all. What are they trying to prove? Parts of these review and article are baffling to me. I just don't agree with the Judas Priest review at all, sorry. I think The 'Priest really make some great tunes, and knocking the solos? Some of the lead work knocked my jaw open when I heard it, and that (sadly) happens less and less the more you listen to music and quality metal!

Cheers.

It should be an interesting step for trivium to take. Matt heafey's earlier work is highly influenced by japanese themes, and "becoming the dragon" (albeit a terrible music vid) is a great song. The lyrics take a turn at something bruce dickinson/steve harris would do, and it's got great composition. Although i hope that matt stays close to his bandmates influences, a japan-themed album is definitely worth the buy.
