nice reviews, i love TMiM...btw what do you mean by swan song?
POSTED: 03/27/2009 - 09:31 am / quote |
Reviewer Pete :
"The phrase "swan song" is a reference to an ancient belief that the Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is completely mute during its lifetime until the moment just before it dies, when it sings one beautiful song"

Citizen7 :
Definitely love the new Mastodon CD. Other than that, not too much exciting has been happening lately. Still, there are still a few bands set to release great albums this year.

It's a shame that Ultimate Guitar has been so shoddy lately that you have to hunt for this article, and the main link on the home page brings you to August 2007 Month In Metal.

And I wonder if Varg Vikesnes still has any great black metal in his cold heart? The later Burzum material doesn't give me any confidence.
POSTED: 03/27/2009 - 10:17 am / quote |
Reviewer Pete :
I think Varg is more or less done with crafting tr00 black metal. He probably just wants to live his life alone and isolated...but not inside four walls.

And you can bet your rear end that there'll be some high profile releases prior to the festival season. April/May and to some extent June are the busiest months of the year.

TheConjuration :
I'm glad Varg's released. I hope he still has something great left in him. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is the best black metal album ever in my opinion.
POSTED: 03/27/2009 - 10:33 am / quote |
Keskimaki :
Tim 'Ripper' Owens will release his first solo album “Play My Game” via Steamhammer/SPV in May.

I'd almost count Beyond Fear as that, as Owens and John Comprix are mainly behind both projects.

God Seed is a rather unexciting, un-black metal name.

Well I used to hate Mastodon, but I must say i am quite enjoying this new album.

This is my favorite UG article by he way. Keep up the good work.

And what about news from tBDM or BTBAM??? Behemoth???

It was out last month dude...

And what about news from tBDM or BTBAM??? Behemoth???

No news about them in the month of March. Well, some about Behemoth and their studio adventures, but nothing more substantial (release date etc) than I've reported in previous installments.

I'd almost count Beyond Fear as that, as Owens and John Comprix are mainly behind both projects.

Yeah I know. I just quoted his press release.

Mastodon has gradually worked their way up to being my favorite band ever. I love Crack The Skye but I 100% agree that many people might be turned off to it. The vocals really surprised me. I never really listen to the vocals/lyrics in songs and focus entirely on the music underneath it. And generally, I feel that Mastodon is a perfect band for this because the vocals were just always there, but really did not jump out at you. The vocals on Crack The Skye were a welcomed addition though. I'm really enjoying it.

Bit of a harsh review on queensryche pete. It's hard to compare "American soldier" to probably one of the best metal concept albums of all time. Definitely not one of their best efforts but its pretty good. give it another listen.

Seriously. Queensryche still has some magic left in them. They need to stop doing concept albums and just come out with new tracks. I do enjoy American Soldier though. Its not that bad at all. Not a masterpiece, but a decent record. Cant wait to see them again on May 8th.

I'm going to vehemently disagree with the reviewer's opinion on Blood Mountain--not only did I love the album, I know many people who started listening to metal because of it. For some reason it really appealed to some members of the "indie" crowd. One friend jumped right from listening to Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth to Mastodon and Isis. I'm not going to toss any insults though, because he does give props to Leviathan, and this column is invariably a highlight of my month. I'm going to try to find Amesoeurs, it sounds rather intriguing. The description for Blackguard reminded me of other extreme metal I find "fun..." Children of Bodom and Kalmah, so if Blackguard is anything like them I'll enjoy it.

I love Crack the Skye! Listen on headphones, blasting Oblivion is like meeting God. Oh wait, Mastodon are God now. Seriosuly... each of their albums is so different from the last, and brilliant in its own way. Crack the Skye was not what I was expecting at all... except that it could have been crafted only by Mastodon. Already my mind is spinning thinking about what they could come up with next.

As we all know, music (metal in particular) is about popular opinion and herd mentality. I loved Blood Mountain but I don't care if Pete doesn't, because well...I can see past my own nose.

The 12 aren't considered metal, but it's one of the best releases I have ever heard. Jon Karel's drumming is immpeccable. And Alex Pareja's avant-jazz fushion? Holy ****.

Yeah, well, I really don't give two shits what the metal community considers to be good or bad when I do my reviews. I most certainly don't deny that "Blood Mountain" was well received and did good for them, but what other people think of it doesn't bother or affect me in the least. That's how it goes, and that how it has to be, otherwise I'd just be putting out reviews containing whatever it is the masses want to hear.

Being The Black Album of metal journalists isn't all that appealing to me. But I'll change my beer coaster now, just because...now where is my Nostradamus CD?

That creates some funny mental images, fair doos. Good that he's out like, but it's difficult to know what to expect from him... I Just have to wait and see.

As for him saying he's staying Black metal, I think that's great - He shouldn't branch out to do some pansy genre just 'cus the world's changed a little bit.

i think the new mastodon album is great personally, but im a big progressive metal guy, its not too obscure to the point where non-progressive listeners will hate it though, the newest cynic album seems to turn off a lot of people with the falsetto singing but i think theyre both genius.
