I'm learning this song cause I heard it's good practice for building speed and skills. Everyone who thinks it's hard should give it a shot, cause it's not even as close to as hard as everyone thinks it is.

From what I've learned (just a few days ago... shut up), it's really easy.

Here's an example- on the thinest string
Start with your left hand, first finger on the second fret. Then, use your right hand (middle or first finger, I prefer middle), and put it on the twelth fret (you go above the fret board with your right hand, unlike your left). You have just tapped (it's pretty much like hammering on). Then, release the right hand's finger from the ninth fret, but as doing so, push it down a little. This will make it play the second fret's not that your left hand is on. Then, now that your right hand isn't touching any frets and your left hand has your first finger on the second fret, hammer-on the to fifth fret, and hold that until you start back on the ninth fret. Once you start the tap on the ninth fret, let go of the fifth.

Sorry for second post but...

On last comment, I said twelth fret, all twelves in there are supposed to be nines.

Also, when tapping. make sure you put lots of pressure when the finger hits the fret, you want a solid sound, not just a weak little squeak.

And just try and repeat it over and over until you can get it going really fast and steady.

here it is again written
hand on 2 t9 h5 t9 h5 t9 h5 over and over again, remember to keep your first finger on the two though, that's the note you'll hear when you release the tap on the ninth fret.

After you get the hand of that, try this.

Do 2 t9 h5 t9 h5 a couple times then keep everything the same but more the nine to a ten so it's 2 t10 h5 t10 h5 t10 h5, and after that a couple times, more to 4 t12 h7 t12 h7 t12 h7

That's, from one tab, part of the tapping part in Eruption (except it's on the second string up, instead of the first, I just like playing it on the first because it plays easiuer and sounds better in my opinion.

Wow this is a really good tab you must have spent hours learning to do this tab, from a video. If you did this tab by ear then your really good at tabbing music. Most of these tabs are so off that they arent worth anyones time. Yet this tab was so good i learned the entire song good job id give it a 4 star i only give 5's to perfect songs and theres a few mistakes in there

Just devote and hour or two on saturday to learning this tab. Start slow then u can speed up. Good tab.

Thats an amazing tab! I can play it, Id give it a 98%. The part before the double tapping is off, and the tapping will never be perfect, but who gives a sit? Perfection!
BTW, if you have a bass as well (I have a Sqier Telecaster and P-bass) try the tapping part of Eruption on the E string. If done right, it sounds amazing!!!

=\ I have the offical tab, and this is actually nothing like it. I know the offical tab isn't always right, but the problem is that this tab sounds nowhere near as good as the offical one lol. Its better than the rest though, i'll give you that. Not even the offical tab has the fast pull-offs/hammer ons fully correct though (basing this off of my own hearing... and about 10 other peoples lol). They're close, but not perfect, so i wouldn't expect a normal guitar player could figure it out exact either.

this songs easy for everyone who leaves comments here. if the tab isnt right...FIGURE IT OUT URSELVES. just play it on ur pc slow and u can hear every detail, unless u dont know what a pinch harmonic is or tapping which is a little sad. none the less this tab may not be perfect but is pretty accurate good job to whoever did this.

For everyone who is sayin that malmsteen is better than Van Halen:

sure malmsteen can play faster than van halen but that's not what makes a guitarist.
Speed helps but it's really the emotion they put into the instrument.
Saying malmsteen is better than VH is like saying that the guys from dragonforce are better than hendrix. Sure they may be able to play much faster but they don't even come close to him in musicianship, improvisation and phrasing.
Yes, Malmsteen can play 400bpm arpeggios but he's a cocky ****er and EVH is a much better musician. Plus Eddie basically invented tapping.

man tremolo picking is alternate picking but REALLY REALLY FAST!!! as far as i know... correct me if im wrong... and chicken picking is like muting on the down st... i have f*cking idea man XD

When you break this song/warm-up down it is very not all that difficult. Eddie Van Halen is using a combination of the "EVH" scale and A Minor Pentatonic Blues. Yes it will take time to learn and master certain parts because of the speed factor but it is all pretty basic.

Ulrich and Hetfield were so impressed with Mustaine's warm-up and equipment, they asked him to join before the audition even began.


An early business card (circa 1982). The band's self titled demo would later take its unofficial name from this same card.In March and April of 1982, several demos were recorded with this lineup including Hit The Lights, Ron's Garage (which was recorded in McGovney's garage) and the Power Metal demo. A few months later the band recorded a full demo, No Life 'Til Leather, which quickly drew attention on the underground tape trading circuit. They then went on to release a live demo titled Metal Up Your Ass.

Later that year, Ron McGovney left the band and Metallica asked Trauma bassist Cliff Burton to join. Burton agreed if the band would relocate to his hometown in Castro Valley, CA. With Burton the band recorded the Megaforce Demo. After establishing themselves in the Bay Area thrash metal scene, Metallica traveled to the New York Tri-State Region in 1983 at the urging of promoters Jon and Marsha Zazula. After a few gigs the band signed with the Zazulas' new label, Megaforce Records. Shortly after being signed, Ulrich and Hetfield decided Mustaine's aggressive and disruptive behavior (related to alcohol and drug use)[citation needed] was becoming too much to handle. Kirk Hammett was brought in from the band Exodus, and Mustaine was fired, soon to create the thrash band Megadeth.

In late spring 1983, the band travelled to Rochester, New York to record their first album,"Metal Up Your Ass." However, due to conflict with the record label regarding the title, the album was later renamed Kill 'Em All. The album was not an initial financial success, but it earned them a growing fanbase in the underground metal scene. Despite the animosity, Dave Mustaine, who would go on to fame with his band Megadeth, still has co-writing credits on "Jump in the Fire", "Phantom Lord", "Metal Militia" and the notable "The Four Horsemen" (originally titled "The Mechanix" and listed as such on early demo tapes). Another early favorite was "Seek & Destroy." The 1989 re-release included fan favorites "Am I Evil?", from Diamond Head, and "Blitzkrieg" from the band Blitzkrieg, which were later included in their Garage album.

A year later, Metallica released Ride the Lightning. The album's inclusion of a slower, more introspective song, "Fade to Black", set Metallica apart from other thrash bands. Despite some claims of selling out, classic fans note this album has many worthy numbers. In addition to the title track and "Fade to Black", it boasts "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Creeping Death", and the 9-minute instrumental "The Call of Ktulu." Dave Mustaine still has credits recognized for "Ride the Lightning" and "The Call of Ktulu".

Their first release with Elektra was 1986's Master of Puppets, which would serve as their breakthrough album. i can play eruption, its hard, but i do it onstage between songs when the other guitarist is tuning nd stuff.

dude, although im not a major EVH fan, Malmsteen only plays fast sweeps and arpeggios. thats it. have u seen the video where he tries to play blues?! it ends up being nothin but arpeggios, he cant play with technique other than sweeps.

btw this is by far the best tab here. u really know ur shit if u can tab this song out where it actually sounds good. 5* love it

1. eddie said he made only one mistake on the album version of eruption

2. eddie didnt 'invent' tapping
but making it famous
he got the idea from jimmy page from the ending of heartbreaker (live i guess) where jimmy lifts the guitar above his head and does and bunch of pulls and hammers with his left hand
eddie is a genius so he figured he could make his right hand the nut and swithing the placement of his hand (youtube it, not that hard to find)
for a list of people who tapped before him
go to wikipedia and type in something like 'first guitar tapping'

3. he plays the same eruption almost every performance
but he also plays countless other songs intwined with it
ever heard of 316, spanish fly, cathedral etc.


4. the tapping is slightly wrong because eddie uses two different techniques
in the beggening to the tapping part to almost the end he is doing something like this

it looks wrong, but he does this very fast
then towards the end of the tapping
where it sounds "faster"
it isint really faster but a different technique
the 'normal' technique

5. this is a good tab, not the best but very, very good

6. eddie is really fast, really f*cking fast
during the 12-12-12-16-16-16-19-19-19-17-17-17-16-16-16...etc part
he discribes his picking as hummingbird picking
he puts the pick between his thumb and middle finger, slightly bends his pinky back and goes crazy, faster than you
he could diffenetly be in the top ten fastest guitarist if he went his fastest
he doesnt go super fast because not all the time is sounds good
eddie doesnt sweep, Malmsteen just sweeps, no other technique except sweeping, too much sweeping = bad and annoying
eddie has class and style

just a little avice if you wanna sound like really awesome at the end with the tapping use wa,h like slowley push it down, then up, repeat

when lpaying the tapping part the lower E string starts to ring causing unwanted noise nd it wont sound the way its supposed to. ny1 kno how to fix this problem? nice tab btw

Note the tuning is 1/4 of a step down for that whole album

Hehe, i learned it through this (thanks by the way, a very good tab) and busted it out at a dying open mic night (basically if you can play, get up and play some stuff). But yeah the night was dying and everyone was looking bored so i got up and said something like "Er... ok this is a little dead..." then busted this out and some pints were dropped.

And i sooooo pulled afterwards :D

So yeah, anyone need some inspiration to learn this song? imagine a pub with jaws on the floor and some absolutely fit bird that you fancied for ages comes up to you... *thumbs*

HAL LEONARD's 25 Great Guitar Solos book has an extremely accurate version of the song. Of course no one can play it exactly like Eddie did. I will try to post it but I don't know the admins sound picky. Either way this is a pretty good tab.

I'll go ahead and tell u PVLover5509 is right, i wasted 3 days learning this tab and then I watched the guy on youtube and his version is right. This is completely wrong except for the tapping. Just listen to the song and try and play this to it..its wrong.

i've been playing for 6 days and i can play this at top speed of 200 bpms perfectly. i am a guitar god

This is just me, but at the very end of the song I play a 12 instead a 0 on the E string (still the same note, just an octave higher), and then slide down, it sounds like the song to me.

I rated this tab one star because I do not have to skill to play it full speed because I am a cock sucking troll.

Realistically, there's no need to correct that, it's just a typo, no one is not going to realise what it means!

Is your action set too low (are the strings too close to the neck)? That will cause a buzzing sound especially if you tuned your guitar down for a Van Halen song , or many songs that are tuned lower. If what I said sounds confusing, you can go on you tube to see what I am talking about but I do not suggest you adjust your neck if you haven't been taught how. Take it to a guitar shop. If you look on You Tube just type in "Adjusting action on guitar". You will see Brother.
