the intro to this song is played best if you have your hands in position at the start and let the notes ring out a bit it gives it a sweet effect. ie. the first part of the intro bar the first fret with your first finger and then on the 2nd part. then on the next one make a D-Chord shapeand the put your little finger on the 4th fret of the D string and on the last bit put your 1st finger on 1st fret of the B-string and ya 2nd on 2nd fret of the G_string
lets all give him 2 bucks for doing such a good job and maybe he'll do more kick ass tabs for 1 buck from each of us because he'll be so damn rich, well thats my two bits, by the way, anyone who even makes an effort to practice their guitar every day, rules, no matter how crappy it is, later guitar dudes!

Anyone seen the tab from www.mikesguitarsite.co.uk? Is this one more correct? The part just before Plant says "and she's buying a stairway to heaven" right at the very end is the part I'm interested in comparing. This tab has it like this:

for example and mike's has it:

Which way is correct? Also just before the solo starts it sounds like Jimmy plays a few single notes (like right before the solo!) but this tab only has chords. Just asking, not making any statements because I'm really not sure. Anyone?
Having looked at it for some time I agree with you Mutts, Mike's guitar version is better, at least for the electric part and that's all I'm concerned with really.

good tab. id be willing to bet this is the most played song ever on guitar. it was number one for 3 years except for a month or however long it was because of maroon 5...i still dont see what some guitar played see in those guys. if you wanna get good at guitar, turn off the maroon 5 and good charlotte and listen to some zeppelin, 80's metallica, and some pink floyd.

This tab is perfect I listened to the song while going over the tabs and there is no mistake. If you tabbed this yourself, it had to take at least two months to get it down and set the lyrics with the tab. I wish all tabs were like this. 5*

Okay dudes, we've already established that he took the tab from a book. Who cares. You now have the tab, and evidently you've all used it on here, as you searched for it. Also, this person probably knows the band isn't 'Led Zeppeling', it was a typo, not him/her not knowing the bands name.
hey zepp rocker the name "led zeppelin" comes from when jimmy page told keith moon (drummer the who) that hes forming a band and keith moon said that would go over like a Lead Zeppelin so the name is really a throwback in his face just so you know

Put a spare finger over the 3rd string to stop it from ringing and play it like a chord.

Ok, the tab probably isn't PERFECT by definition, but if no one can give a better part that everyone agrees on then its PERFECT ENOUGH LOL My only questions are these... Is it played on 2 guitars or is it over-dubbed in the studio? If so what kind of guitars are used? And if it IS a 12 string than that would explain why some retards would be complaining about it not sounding right! In the first version is part of the intro missing or played by another guitar. If it is played by another guitar then its not missing. =) Also, which version is the correct, and complete, and correctly ordered version, and which is the exact album version (Not the alternate version) I'd love to know which one to play LOL! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is some advice for you novices out there as well (I figure if I ask so much i might as well contribute something). I actually gave up on this tab a while ago when i was learning guitar because i was stuck on the same chord at the end of the strumming parts. The chord which is the same as a barred F Maj, or F Maj7(or whatever its technical name is) except with the first string played open IS possible to be played with practice! It may be obvious to some of you but wasn't to me and probably isn't to many others out there but this is how you play it... - Fret the 2nd fret of the second string (B) with you 1st finger and make sure its with the finger tip only!(so that you don't deaden the first string(e)! - Use your 2nd finger to fret the 2nd fret of the third string(G) - Use your 4th finger to fret the 3rd fret of the fourth string(D) - Use your 3rd finger to fret the 3rd fret of the fifth string(A) - Now for the tricky part. You curl your thumb around the neck so that the first section of it hangs down the fretboard and over the 1st fret of the sixth string(E). This requires you to reposition your arm in a number of ways. You can pull you arm up, squeeze it flat to your ribs, and try to pull back with your hand and pinch the string in front of the fret with the pad or your thumb, or start with ur arm in normal position, lay your thumb over, pinch, then bring your arm away from your body and up. Either way you will be required to roll your wrist outward and up to change the position of your thumb and use the neck or your guitar for leverage to get a firm grip with no fret buzz.

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, as I did not read through all 500+ comments (which is quite amazing), but he does leave out a section in the third line of the intro (where there is an obvious gap). It's not hard to figure out. Great tab by the way, also identical to one i found in a book at the library. Considering the amount of work put in I think I'll let the typo at the beginning slide.

SMALL CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS One very very small correction that i feel needs to be made in the verses between the arpeggiated C-G-Am-C-G-F-Am section and the strumming section there's a little bridge line (i hope that's a good enough explanation, i'll tab it out just in case.) There's a much easier way of playing it. here's how it's tabbed:
Anyways it's an important eargrabbing bridge because Page overdubbed a couple of times playing it, so it's got a nice ringing sound to it. First off, the first two notes are the correct notes (A & B) but they are an octave too low. And also the riff is played out of the fifth instead of using open strings which is easier. and i don't know where that D# (second string 4th fret) at the end came from. Wrong note completely. Here's how i play it.
I think that's the easiest way to play the riff. But if you've learned it and are accustom to playing at the fifth fret then you may like to play it like this:
That's all the same notes, but played just like the original tab. Either way the original is slightly off as i see it.
Also to clear up some questions people have been asking: There IS a missing part in the intro. But just look four lines down at the end (over "heaven Theres") and you'll find the riff that should be there.
On the recording, Page uses several guitars, overdubbing many parts of the song for emphasis or tone. a 12 string is used for a many of the strumming parts (IE-backing the solo, and in a few others.) For those of you that don't know, all a 12 string does is add doubled notes or octaves for a bigger, more open, impressive tone. anything played on a 12 string can be played exactly the same on a 6 string with little difference. So don't sweat it.
Tabs are meant ONLY AS A GUIDE, and may be more or less specific than necessary at any given place in the song. Beginning players should remember that most bends are whole tone bends, so IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE BENDING THE NOTE PROPERLY SIMPLY PLAY THE NOTE TWO FRETS UP and you'll have it generally correct. For example, where the tab says to play |-8b-|, you can replace it with |-10-|.
Also in this song specifically, Page uses many broken chords. One person asked what this chord was

Theres a problem at the beginning, when you play the 2 G's, 3rd fret, Thinnest and Thickest string, your supposed to pick the B open than the G and than pick the G (3rd Fret) on the Thinnest E string and hammer it back to the second fret and than a D chord twice, listen to the song. But the guy who made this tab might have hid it in there somewhere but i dont see it. Good tab though...

Holy crap are there enough comments yet? The tab seems right but I don't see why everyone raves about this song so much. it's good but not their best, and there's plenty of better solos out there.
i think this tab is pretty great but i rated it a 4 for a couple of reasons. on this part: A|--0-/8-7--| no one usually picks this up but i think its supposed to be like this, with an extra A note: G|--2-------| D|----------| A|--0-/8-7--| Also i really think that you should show the strum pattern for the end after the solo. its really important to play that right and get all the hand muting in between down. Otherwise the solo is pretty good and its a good tab.
Everyone thinks that it's automatically 100% correct because it was in a magazine... I looked in a guitar book a while ago that said he started in an ascending A minor chord (and believe it or not, that didn't sound too off). Just thought I'd point out print isn't always right. I wonder if whatever unregistered poster tabbed this knows it's getting 5000+ hits a day.
very good tab just at the end I thing the background chords over the solo are AM-AM7- and F/C.It doesn't make much of a difference it just has the same amount of strings to play as the others.

This song is brilliant and a big thanks to the poster, although I really don't understand why so many people are saying it's that hard. I can play the whole finger picking part with my eyes closed and I've only been finger picking for 3 days now. However, if anyone else here wants another fine piece of finger picking music, I'd suggest Beethoven's "moonlight sonata", which is pretty darn challenging. I started playing that the same day as Stairway and I'm only around the half way point. Mastered what I've learned thus far, though.

my version is correct - i guarantee - but i read through all the rest of your tab and the only other mistakes were the missing bar in the intro and the incorrect spelling of 'zeppelin', both of which i imagine you're already aware of

i just spent absolutely ages reading all the comments here (yes, all of the, :/) and i have to say there are many idiots who have asked retarded questions. i know most people reading this comment will know the answers, but for the sake of the noobs i thought i would write a list answering all the questions so everyone is clear.

A "the intro is finger-picked i.e. you use your fingers to pluck the strings. i find it best to use my thumb for all notes on the 4th and 5th strings, first finger for the 3rd string notes, 2nd finger for the 2nd string, and 3rd finger for the 1st string. it may take some time to get the hang of it"
Q "it doesnt sound right" A "apart from the obvious (tune your guitar), this issue is probably with either the intro or the solo. if you dont think the solo sounds right, make sure you use a slight overdrive and also reverb effect on your amp and it sounds awesome. if you dont think the intro sounds right, it is probably because you are playing each note on the tab seperately, while actually it is supposed to be an arpeggio. this means that you barre the chord with your first finger, and let sunsequent notes ring over each other. for example, with the first chord of the song, Aminor, barre the 1st - 4th strings at the 5th fret with your 1st finger, and then keep it there until you have to move it down to barre at the 2nd fret. this may be tricky at first if youre a noobm but yuoll get it eventually"

Mate, just so you know: All of this song apart from the Guitar solo is done on a 12-string Electric and is played clean. The guitar solo is played on a 6-string Electric and is also played clean. That's how he played it in the studio and this is hopw he plays it in concerts. Just so you know.

prackouski, theyre called Led Zeppelin because another band at their time said they would "sink like a hot air balloon". so they came up with Lead Zepplin. but then their manager changed it to Led Zeppelin because people were pronoucing their name lee-eed zeppelin instead of led zeppelin.
Didn't Keith Moon and John Entwistle (The Who), say "they'd go down like a lead balloon" so that's how they got the name Led Zeppelin May just be a myth though, not 100% sure...

in the 18th "measure" of the solo it sais "10b14" ...how do u do that? ive never head of a bend that high, and its impossible because the string would have to bend off the fret board.
Amazing tab. Very accurate, except on the solo, the beginning notes should be: e|-------- B|5------- G|7b9----- D|-------- A|-------- E|-------- That's Jimmy's signature technique. Also, at the end of the first phrase in the solo, use the 3rd fret on the D string to give a brighter tone. Of course, it's easier to use the 8th on the A, but it sounds much better my way :P

2nd finger, 2nd freat, and a quick slide down to the 8th freat and back to the 7th freat. After you pluck the three strings play the A string open then like a quick hammer but still hit the A string and then slide down to the 8th freat.

My only questions are these...
Is it played on 2 guitars or is it over-dubbed in the studio? If so what kind of guitars are used? And if it IS a 12 string than that would explain why some retards would be complaining about it not sounding right!
In the first version is part of the intro missing or played by another guitar. If it is played by another guitar then its not missing. =)
Also, which version is the correct, and complete, and correctly ordered version, and which is the exact album version (Not the alternate version) I'd love to know which one to play LOL!

Here is some advice for you novices out there as well (I figure if I ask so much i might as well contribute something). I actually gave up on this tab a while ago when i was learning guitar because i was stuck on the same chord at the end of the strumming parts. The chord which is the same as a barred F Maj, or F Maj7(or whatever its technical name is) except with the first string played open IS possible to be played with practice! It may be obvious to some of you but wasn't to me and probably isn't to many others out there but this is how you play it...
- Fret the 2nd fret of the second string (B) with you 1st finger and make sure its with the finger tip only!(so that you don't deaden the first string(e)!
- Use your 2nd finger to fret the 2nd fret of the third string(G)
- Use your 4th finger to fret the 3rd fret of the fourth string(D)
- Use your 3rd finger to fret the 3rd fret of the fifth string(A)
- Now for the tricky part. You curl your thumb around the neck so that the first section of it hangs down the fretboard and over the 1st fret of the sixth string(E). This requires you to reposition your arm in a number of ways. You can pull you arm up, squeeze it flat to your ribs, and try to pull back with your hand and pinch the string in front of the fret with the pad or your thumb, or start with ur arm in normal position, lay your thumb over, pinch, then bring your arm away from your body and up. Either way you will be required to roll your wrist outward and up to change the position of your thumb and use the neck or your guitar for leverage to get a firm grip with no fret buzz.

SMALL CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS
One very very small correction that i feel needs to be made
in the verses between the arpeggiated C-G-Am-C-G-F-Am section and the strumming section there's a little bridge line (i hope that's a good enough explanation, i'll tab it out just in case.) There's a much easier way of playing it. here's how it's tabbed:

First off, the first two notes are the correct notes (A & B) but they are an octave too low. And also the riff is played out of the fifth instead of using open strings which is easier. and i don't know where that D# (second string 4th fret) at the end came from. Wrong note completely. Here's how i play it.

That's all the same notes, but played just like the original tab. Either way the original is slightly off as i see it.
Also to clear up some questions people have been asking:
There IS a missing part in the intro. But just look four lines down at the end (over "heaven Theres") and you'll find the riff that should be there.
On the recording, Page uses several guitars, overdubbing many parts of the song for emphasis or tone. a 12 string is used for a many of the strumming parts (IE-backing the solo, and in a few others.) For those of you that don't know, all a 12 string does is add doubled notes or octaves for a bigger, more open, impressive tone. anything played on a 12 string can be played exactly the same on a 6 string with little difference. So don't sweat it.
Tabs are meant ONLY AS A GUIDE, and may be more or less specific than necessary at any given place in the song. Beginning players should remember that most bends are whole tone bends, so IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE BENDING THE NOTE PROPERLY SIMPLY PLAY THE NOTE TWO FRETS UP and you'll have it generally correct. For example, where the tab says to play |-8b-|, you can replace it with |-10-|.
Also in this song specifically, Page uses many broken chords.

A "apart from the obvious (tune your guitar), this issue is probably with either the intro or the solo. if you dont think the solo sounds right, make sure you use a slight overdrive and also reverb effect on your amp and it sounds awesome. if you dont think the intro sounds right, it is probably because you are playing each note on the tab seperately, while actually it is supposed to be an arpeggio. this means that you barre the chord with your first finger, and let sunsequent notes ring over each other. for example, with the first chord of the song, Aminor, barre the 1st - 4th strings at the 5th fret with your 1st finger, and then keep it there until you have to move it down to barre at the 2nd fret. this may be tricky at first if youre a noobm but yuoll get it eventually"

This song is the best song in the rock history, so it aint that strange that millions of people want to learn to play it. and it takes 13 pages to print it out, so i think if he didn't copy it it takes ALOT more time to make this then you use to make yours.

Also, at the end of the first phrase in the solo,
use the 3rd fret on the D string to give a brighter tone.
Of course, it's easier to use the 8th on the A, but it
sounds much better my way :P
