Now that Chinese Democracy - otherwise known as the most highly anticipated (or at least most hyped) album of the past few decades - has finally hit the shelves, a flurry of other bands can now be fully given the spotlight. These hard-working musicians might not have dedicated roughly 2 decades to their newest works of genius, but most have proven in the past that they only need a year or two to deliver a solid follow-up. So mark your calendars accordingly, as we've compiled a list of the albums you can expect to hit record stores in 2009. We apologize for those wishy-washy bands that provide the generic summer of '09 or late 2009/early 2010 dates, but on the other hand it certainly does keep us reading their blogs for the latest news. Clever, indeed.

While January is not a weak month by any means, things will start to get very interesting come February. Lamb of God and U2, bands at the opposite ends of the musical spectrum, will deliver two of the most highly anticipated albums of 2009. Early Spring brings the release of Mastodon's concept album Crack the Skye, with themes involving Tsarist Russia, Rasputin, and Stephen Hawking - a guaranteed conversation piece. Killswitch Engage and Megadeth are also set for early 2009 releases, while the winter months promise the return of Iron Maiden, KoRn, and possibly Deep Purple (sadly, without Ritchie Blackmore).

Many of the artists listed have already planned tentative tours to support their new albums in 2009, so expect next year to be jam-packed with killer concerts. Dream Theater, KISS, and U2 are just a few that are already gearing up for the album/tour combo, and don't be surprised if most of the bands mentioned below make it to your town in the upcoming months as well.

do u want to tell me where Green Day is on this list? cause i don't see them, and that's pissing me off! either there's some discrimination going on, or ur just really unaware that Green Day's 3 albums are slated to be released 2009!

Are you f***ing kidding me? Lamb of God, KillSwitch Engage, Mastodon, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, New Found Glory, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, Down, Rammstein, Slash, Dream Theater... All great names, well maybe not NFG. What more do you want?

I hope the Queens of the Stone Age are still putting out a new album in 09. I know for sure that they'll remaster their self-titled in the spring, though. that's be pretty cool.

Nobody cares, they suck. I hope none of those little gay pop bands ever release another album again. Unfortunately, I can't control that. But still, Green Gay is a joke.

Yeah, and I'm looking forward to it But as it doesn't have a final release date, they might not have included it. They also said spring timeish, so it looks like they haven't got'n that far XD. And SlayerOfTheGods, you are entitled to an opinion, but don't go badmouthing other bands and trying to force your opinion onto other people. Some people, like I, really like Green Day, so keep remarks like that to yourself.

Kreator, Megadeth, Lamb Of God, God Forbid, Iron Maiden (!), Dream Theater, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer.. Looking forward to all of them! I guess I will check out the Aerosmith album when it's out too. Maybe the Anthrax one too, not really sure yet tho.. The same with God Forbid. I really hope Alter Bridge, Heathen and Exhorder will release sometime in 2009. If all of them do so, 2009 looks very good.

I thought Heaven and Hell was releasing a new album for early '09...must have forgotten to put them on the list. Thin Lizzy's "Still Dangerous" (live Philly 77')should also be out in March '09. Nice to see Maiden, Anthrax, and Megadeth on that list.
    burn out on me
Third Eye Blind's new album "Ursa Major" is supposed to be coming out in March. That's not official and is subject to change.

If the last DT album was any indication, this next one is going to be the must-have addition to any modern prog fan's collection.
