An article about music and how I approach it. An article about open-mindedness. Rock on!

Downloading from the internet... Downloading from the internet is good. Great. Firstly, it is a plus to the progress and evolution of music music, if there is such a thing, because people won't be stuck to pop tunes on the radio, like I was until the age of 15. Internet is actually the only way I know to discover music. Who has enough money to buy CD's? I only bought five CD's up till now. I'm 19. No but seriously, how else are we supposed to get new music? Can someone tell me? Friends can tell you about new shit they hear, but where do they hear it from? Mostly Internet. So I hope people reading this article can keep some suggestions coming!

This article is largely philosophical. So don't read if you're looking for an opinion. I have very few. I just have preferences.

About Divergent Tastes

Music. We listen to it for a reason. There is so much of it out there. I use to only like music with which I could connect emotionally. Songs about love, or about loneliness, deception. Nothing groovy, or funky, or plain high on life. But more and more I listen to music for the music, and for the good feeling that most artists (Rock and Roll!!) strive on. That's how I came to open up from only a few bands like Third Eye Blind, Our Lady Peace, Dashboard Confessional, Greenday to songs about breaking everything from Sum 41 or P.O.D., Limp Bizkit, Weezer, Oasis, Deftones, or rappers sucking yo mama and killing everyone or smashing windows and bleeding... you know what bands I'm talking about. Just to name a few.

Pop music can be good. The main criticism that it gets is that it's dishonest in its delivery. If we just look at American Idol and see how most finalist don't put their souls into it.... this is true. But something to be kept in mind is that people can sing a song just for the beauty of the song, not necessarily for the original feeling itself. Pop tunes are often easy going melodies, even when it's supposed to be sad. For example, Evanescence. Very successful new band. Their songs are very structured, very poppy in that sense, but still there is feeling to be taken from all of it. More importantly, there is good musical creation. That's the main point of this pop paragraph. I personnally cannot take most pop. But nevertheless we must admit that pop plays on the radio because it's catchy, in a good way. And sometimes it can be honest. When I sing a pop song I'll always change it big time to suit my style, but nevertheless what is undeniable is that there IS some music in all the fakeness.

Punk, emo, ska music: I don't know much, but I think that lately the trend is exagerated. Too many small bands with only a few power chords are coming out, making songs that all sound somewhat alike, 3 note melodies and very basic transitions, ruling the teen world. I have no idea what punk is, but I guess Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, are in there,... it's not bad music, it's just not creative enough to be out there as massive as it is. Just like pop, the danger is that it can on the long run be fake and stagnant for our musical and personal evolution.

Rap: is rap considered music? Why not... Why did Eminem become number 1? Because he had melodies in his songs. But again, we just have to keep in mind that people like rap for a reason. For guitarists rap might not be much of an inspiration but have you ever tried playing a tune rap style, make your guitar cuss and scream like your voice would. Try it out with that in mind, results may vary.

Classical music: ecstatic

Conclusion: All sorts of music can nourish the ear. If we think about it, almost every melody there is, whether it be rock rap funk punk or black metal or jazz or country, can be found in an old classical piece... hmm, says a lot. Creation is infinite, with that in mind, we can more easily accept differences, and embrace them.

Divergent tastes caused by divergent reasons we listen to music.

People listen to this or that for different reasons... because they imagine themselves as the lead singer of that band and only listen to the song so that they can sing along after... this narrows their minds down. Because out of pure curiosity. Good. Because they like what the band is talking about. Whether is be love, life, anger, depression, injustice,... Because they like the general mood of the band's songs. Because they like the band members, and their view on life.

The point is that whatever the reason you listen to a song, may it be in total receptiveness, for the guitar solo, for the chorus, for the verses, for the cool intro, for the lyrics, the voice, the drums, because your girlfriend likes it, because your friends like it, because you feel too lazy to try out some new music in fear of wasting your time, just keep in mind that reason, so that you don't end up feeling bad about music in general, and thinking the wrong things.

It is we who choose what we perceive in a band. I personally never listened to Oasis because I heard of many arrogant comments that the lead singer made towards other bands, the Beatles I think (they were compared to them). So that's that. Now that I got over my prejudice, I started to listen to their songs and realized that I like them a lot. The emotion isn't all that deep, but my overall impression of their music soothes. I just tell myself the singer can sometimes be an arrogant bastard but that deep inside he has some good, some sympathy.

Music can be about just the music. Not the band. Opposite is true. Music can be just about the band. Not the music. Eventually, if the music doesn't grow on you, then the band is out, but if it does...good! We all think we have our tastes, but the truth is that tastes can be biased. For a ton of reasons aside from the ones mentioned above... It is true that you must give songs a chance by listening to them once. But is once enough? I mean, some bands are successful because they are an awesome blend of influences and therefore people are predisposed to liking their creation. But other bands strive for a more personal, new sound, and so coming to like those kinds of bands is a learning process, a whole new language to be assimilated.

So what the hell was this article about? It's, frankly, mostly about me. And open-mindedness. Any suggestions?

I crave new music... here are some bands I like, so guys and girls tell me what you think. And please don't insult me, I'm a very sensitive dude. Lifehouse, Seether, Third Eye Blind, Weezer, Oasis, Our Lady Peace, Jean Leloup, spanish songs. Songs: Satellite(POD), Slit Wrist Theory, Rollin (Limp Bizkit), Dreams (Cranberries), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Early November (Ever So Sweet), Seether (Broken), Matchbox Twenty (Time After Time),... I like emotional music, but hey, once all the emotion is out and you just want to jam with other people, why not ride on a good feeling!

If you've read the article to the end you probably don't dislike all the bullshit I just talked about, so keep those suggestions coming! I have some mind opening to do too... for example, I never gave Marlyn Manson a chance because his face and body just freaks me out... but after seeing him in the Bowling For Columbine documentary, I really like his personality... his spirit...

ALMOST EVERY BAND THAT YOU NAMED APPEARS ON MTV, some of your bands are sell out, with exceptions, like Our lady Peace, i like them, or nirvana. But Limp Bizkit and POD and Sum 41 appears constantly on MTV. And other thing. You constantly download songs and you have ever bought only 5 cd's on 4 years, that means that you are stealing the songs that the bands have suffered making them in studio. I download songs to know artists but if a band like me i go to the store and i bought the CD. You said some good things but i disagree strongly with the last thing i said. YOU SUCK stealer. Only one star

Bottom line, music comes from the ***ing heart, whatever your style is your style aslong as you can get what you feel out on guitar, then why should you care what it sounds like to other ppl???
    Ash-Ock

mmm... I know what music is... it's about gettin' high off of it... you know, man... gettin' high off of music... *** yeah.... ..it's like, you know, the whole ***in' feeling.. music is all about feeling and emotion and shit, and I mean all kinds of feelings, whether happy, sad, angry, high, whatever man... and if you think that music has no feeling in it... it's not music, man... 'cuz what you feel from it, that's the most important reason I love music... it's all about the feeling...
    noob4lyfe
and one more thing.. I listen to all kinds of music.. I'm not attached to just one genre... that's just crazy.. music is like food, I think.. you have a favorite one, but you should try all the other kinds of styles from everywhere.. but it's never bad, because it's food... I love food.. yeah man, food, music... and beer... peace!

you are stealing the songs that the bands have suffered making them in studio. I download songs to know artists but if a band like me i go to the store and i bought the CD. This is true - you're letting your bands down if you just download all their stuff. I do agree that every genre has something for somebody, and must therefore be good. I know it seems hard to understand, but even dance and pop music must be good if people like it. That's not saying that the musicians are good, just that the tune or the words or even the beat is. However, you wrote this article really poorly and it doesn't make much sense. Also, many of the points you make are stupid. In the nicest way possible... one star.

dude downloading music isnt as good as you think it is, whether you realize it or not, a band only makes about $1.50 or $2.00 per cd sold. They need to sell a lot to keep up on the financial side of things. If ur downloading music, chances are a ton of ppl are. So seriously if you like a band and are really into them, buy their cd if you want to hear more of them. Oh and a way to shorten all those paragraphs would be just to say "all music is good, its just a matter of opinion."
    civildp1
this article was pointless. I'm not going to diss you for your tastes but I will diss you for your lack of knowlege. you are writing about your opinion on genres that you know basically nothing about. No body cares about the opinions other people have in music because if you really like a band someones elses opinions won't change yours. Write about something worthwhile. Rap and hip hop are the same thing
    Klown
You gotta be able to "try" to listen to bands. Internet is the only way in my eyes. It could be smart by the bands to do like Velvet Revolver, let people be able to stream of the web, but still, its definatly more appealing to be able to listen to it all the time.

amen. i go from dimmu borgir, arch enemy, children of bodom, to metallica, pantera, megadeth, to lacuna coil, atreyu, inflames, to al dimeola, satriani, vai, beck, (sorry, i dont listen to SRV or hendrix, so shoot me) and then to classical. oh and modest mouse, the killers are kinda cool too.

alright this article was a little stupid but then again the comments were just as stupid appearing on mtv is not selling out
    Nine_Volt_Yoda
Yeah, I read about the first five comments... and I realized something. Most of you are complete morons. That's all I'm saying on the topic. So what if he used personal examples to get a point across... great article.
    Jerome
Hey man, no offense but i happened to notice you kinda labeled yourself as a dude who listens to rock. Where i come from those bands you listed are considered on-the-line between pop and rock. If you want to hear some good music listen listen to the following albums:
    Jerome
Phisical Graffitti by Led Zeppelin, Legend by Bob Marley, The White Album by the Beatles, Steve Millers Greatest Hits, Skynyrds Innards by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tupacs Greatest Hits, Best of Van Halen, Boston(self-titled), Echoes by Pink Floyd, Those are like all my favorite albums and bands
    acdc101
And what the hell all the bands you listed (excluding nirvana) are a bunch of sellout ***** who scream their lungs out and copy other artists styles. Oh yeah and i compliment jerome on listening to good music.
    Anti_Me
mate all the bands there are sell outs/preppy bands. No bands i listen to every appear on MTV. When was the last time you saw Operation Ivy on MTV dude. Listen to good music (VAN HALEN!)

The opening line of this article was idiotic.

As far as I know music has been around a wee bit longer than the internet.

fugazi_punk: "Scientist s actually said a couple of years ago, through study, the only real music was rap music. Why? Because music must consist of these three elements to actually be considered music: 1)Pleasing Quality 2)Definite Pitch 3)Rhythm. I was pissed too, because I used to hate rap and anything other than punk. But I'm more open now to rap, jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock, pop, metal, alternative...and its all helped me. Also, most of your bands you listed are all on MTV and don't require the internet to hear about. And Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are power-pop, not punk or even pop-punk. Pop-punk is for bands like Yellowcard. But I commend you for trying, and those who decide to try to insult you are just immature in my opinion." What the hell are you talking about? Rap isn't the only music that has those three things. In fact I'd say it DOESN'T have those things.
    harm0n20
i liked this article. good job man. and for all of you who dissed it... poo on you.

wtf!! u are a twat, oasis worship the beatles you ignorant twat! they would only say stuff about blur cause they are a bunch of posh southern twats!! u need to get ur facts right u twat!! and i couldnt be arsed to read the whole article only the parts in bold, alvarols made my decision for me, i hate you 3rdEyeBlinded!
    janecoffin27
The only way to not put opinions in is to not give examples. I read all these bands you say you like, and I myself think they all suck. So that's stopping me from reading the whole thing. What I did read was just saying something like "there's good in every kind of music" which is stupid because it's false. I scanned to see if you would talk about blues or metal or other good music and I either missed it or decided you were gonna cater to idiots. One star.
    Destari
I have to say this seems to be largely a load of babble without actually saying anything remotely meaningful. The first paragraph is gibberish anyhow. Well, I'm not harsh enough to give this one star because you are adamant not to be opinionated. Thus, two wholesome nutri-grain stars.

    I totally concur
    bleach1988
why the hell did you write this? nobody really cares about your stupid beleifs that all bands are good so do everyone a favor and shut up. ok please?
    kurtpage
Ok listening to mainstream radio is never gonna open your mind to music. For me i listen to the 2 local college stations...they're great to find cool indie bands. People today tend to ignore older music in my mind. I think there is still alot to learn from the way the Beatles and Zeppelin made AND RECORDED music. The best way to find new bands is to find out what your fav bands listen to. Kurt Cobain(my fav band) the the rest of Nirvana listned to sonic youth, the pixies, and Melvins. The 1st two band are not that heavy but very differnt from mainstream music..and the melvins are heavy and rock. They're not afriead to make noise and jam but then write a good song. And yes i think pop music is good. But when i say pop i mean good melodies and catchy lyrics. I dont mean sugar-coated talentless singers and guitarists(pop punk and bubble gum pop)
    Damicksta2k
I agree with the few actual points you make here (downloading, diversity, American Idol), but it's nothing I have't seen in other articles already 'fraid, nothing jumped out at me as special or different. However, people that are constantly throwing "you suck" or "you're stupid" at every article are getting on my nerves. If you don't like an article, fine, but stop attacking the people who have at least made the effort to submit a piece of work, no matter how bad it may be!
    punks-not-dead
i agree with most of these comments but i dunno it juss was a kinda pointless article...i have a very open mind to music but some ppl dont and thats their choice so let them be

you are wack! what are you doing here?! go sniff some asses or sumthin'
    sithian476
You shouldn't have to "suffer" to make music. If you do, you're in it for the wrong reason
    vortical
Wow if your so inot music then why don't look at bands other than what they repeat on MTV 24/7. Check out Dream Theater or Liquid Tension Experiment. Broaden your horizons, retard.
    Partyboy2k05
I could have sworn i've heard this article once before. Maybe not, but it sure does sound like a repeat...

He is right about us being biased on our tastes and not really realizing it though. Happens to me all the time.

If you?ve read the article to the end you probably don?t dislike all the bullshit I just talked about, You even say its bullshit, Why the hell am I reading this. What's the point, I really don't why you even posted you arrogant "I'm gonna be the jesus here" bastard!
