Talent?

Why do artists who seemingly have no talent at all get so famous with their music?

We listen to music maybe daily hourly or maybe even every minute but when some song comes on the radio which we absolutely hate, we switch to another station, meanwhile millions of 'others' are tuning in to listen. Why do we do this? Why do we hate the artist while others love them? Here's another way to look at it:

Going around the forums and articles of UG have shown me one thing I could use as an example: Arvil Lavigne.

From my observations it would seem that everyone uniformly hates her for some reason. In my case, when I first saw her music come out in 'Complicated' I thought it was ok. I guess that talent can come in many forms as I think it was mentioned in another UG article that being a 'crowd pleaser' or a 'charmer' may be a talent in its own right and thats what I believe Arvil may just be, no matter how annoying she appears to be to some of us. (Of course I'm not saying I like her music, it's just that I am trying to explain why I think so many people like her).

Looks might (but not always) play a vital role in how well an artist or band does in the music scene. In my school in Malaysia, the girls are crazy over 'Busted'. Now I'm not very sure if the dudes there are really good looking as it works the other way too: music can make a guy look good too. Like Jet which started off as a group mainly to attract girls.

Maybe another strange reason would be that the song the artist/band is playing really is good but it is just you who might have a problem with it. I can relate to this when I first saw 'The Reason' music video by Hoobastank. Initially I thought it was a hell of a boring song but the problem with me was that I was hearing the song but never actually paying any real attention to it, 'listening' to it. I guess I never gave it the chance to shine properly until I heard the lyrics fully and appreciated its ingeneous simplicity of the guitar rythms.

The final point would be that we are all human and there is not one moment in time where all the people of the world willingly agreed on something. Therefore there will always be people who hate and love something for whatever reason it may be. Think about that.=)

Well, there's an end to an essay of my thoughts maybe they are valid maybe they are not but they are definitely something to think about whenever you come across a song. Why do some people enjoy it while others quiver in disgust?

Because some people (if not most) don't listen to the details and all that in a song, just the "feeling" or whatever. If I hear something on the radio, I usually don't pay attention to how talented the artist is, cause if it's a good song, who gives a shit? I do appriciate good musicians though. And I think Avril has a couple of ok songs. But I like metal/punk as well.
    uhh_me?
you spelled rhythm wrong, and umm it didn't really have a point or much to do with what qualifies as talent it kinda became a why i like hoobastank article

HI LEVELORD so you came from Malaysia. i came from Indonesia. have you ever heard Too Phat. good hip hop band. they are catchy band and they are freakin talented too. with the way they sing, their lyrics, and the way they mix the traditional malayan songs with hip hop beat. you dont need to play instrument as good as Jimi Hendrix just to show that you have talent.
    make you burn
you need to play an instrument good to show you have talent. crowd pleasing isn't enough for me.

The only musicians with talent are those who play instruments, no the ones that only make "play back", and I mean all the gay-pop/hip-hop culture, they just sing and dance thats no "music" talent
So you're saying singing is not music? I'm sure there would be plenty of vocalists who would disagree wtih you there. Just because you play guitar doesn't mean everyone who can't play instruments has no musical talent. Singing (and bear in mind I can't and don't sing myself) often actually requires more musical ability than guitar playing (which I do) because 1. you have to be able to read music, there are no tabs for vocals and 2. you have to be able to control yourself a lot better since it is you making the sound not an instrument. On a separate point, I agree that dancing involves no musical talent.

Hey Ramco, Im sorry but (i like the article, dont get me wrong) let people speak their opinions. I know you're speaking yours but you dont have to argue about everybodys opinion. I dont like much of their comments too but just deal with it. Further more, I like the article and it justifies good points but there are too many pretty bands that have no talent and are just on MTV or Fuse for looks. Fuse Rocks Rock on

Well I listen to punk/metal so I can't really say anything about talent, however I can tell you why some people don't like some songs. Popularity; I hate popular songs, even if it is a good song when it becomes popular I get pissed off to the point that I can't stand the song. Genre; some people only listen to a certain style of music. Well thats all I've got, good article.

Why do people bash a band because they don't play complicated music? I'm sure over half of those guitarist can play some stairway to heaven, or some jimi hendrix, but that's already been done. They wrote it, so obviously they would play it. And with singing, all singing is musically talented, what I don't like is hearing someone sing music that isn't theirs. Part of singing is writing and if they didn't write it, I don't have as much appreciation for them, because I can think of some girls or guys that could sing the song just as well and probably sound better. And by the way, the Beastie Boys are awesome, even though they sampled illegally constantly.

you are a f**kchop son. it dosent matter if ur hands are quicker than Satriani's or as kool as van halens...its what comes out of it, what it sounds like, f**k you could play a 16th triplet at 230 beats a minute and be better than petrucci but sound like shit. think of the classics that everyone loves, some of em arnt that hard, sure they have some talent but u dont need to be a f**kin insane guitarist to write good music. you are a noob

What's up with all the school girl bitching that goes on around here. I swear to God if I hear another person say SO AND SO SUCKS! I'm going to track them down and bitchslap them myself. That's called trolling, son. Keep your ***ing opinions to yourself. NOBODY cares if you don't like them. How old are you all, 12? Also, this article was not about whether they are a good band or not. It is about the talent of the band. I must agree with the author in that Avril's popularity is mostly due to her looks. Yes, her brother (isn't it her brother?) can play guitar like mad, but if you were to put a fat bitch in Avril's place they wouldn't be close to where they are today.

"if you were to put a fat bitch in Avril's place they wouldn't be close to where they are today. [POSTED: 05 July 2004 - 18:49]| " that is so true. avrils only successful cus shes so hot

I agree that Avril has a few good songs and if she ever stops co-writing all the songs she has and starts do it by herself she might be able to improve. I do think she is talented though she needs to work more on doing it for herself instead of being lead by the hand.

Hey ramco the reason is overplayed. Maybe you should get a better girlfriend (or boyfriend) if you see mtv or any top 40 station, the reason is constantly played and its pissing the hell out of me. I agree with all the people who say the reason sucks ass. If you diasgree ramco. Ram it up ur ex-boyfriends ass

good article... there are many different styles of music for a reason. I am 14 and when i was 11 I listened to Good Charlotte and blink-182 and i thought "boy these guys have talent"... Little did i know that power chords were the foundation of the melody. Now as i have gotten older i picked up the bass and now i listen to the chili peppers. Sometime in my life i will probably change my views on them too. Point is that no matter the talent level, somebody will always love a certain artist. When one person deserts that artist, another person will come along and pick up the new GC cd...

Good artical, but i thout "The Reson" sucked ass and i lissend to it and the lyrics are horrible. But thats my opinion .

Dude, if we were all the same, and had all the same opinions, then we would only have one type of music. That's the reason you have Rap, Rock, R&B, Soul, Pop, Hip Hop, Heavy metal, Rock 'n' Roll, Christian, etc. Because people like DIFFERENT stuff okay? I must say that was a dumb question man. The answer is simply because not every agrees! Duh! Not everybody likes the same thing! Some people like Avril Lavigne and some don't, why are you so worked up about it, everyone has their own seperate opinions.

You've probably never been in a fight with your girl (if you've ever actually been able to get a girl), and in the slight chance that you have you've probably never admitted you were wrong and accepted the blame. The Reason is a great song because it speaks to peoples' emotions, it's a musical expression of something in real life almost everyone can relate to. But then again you probably subscribe to the UG mantra of "if it has widespread appeal it can't be good", which is an irrational statement in and of itself. Nobody can take a song at face value anymore and must find a reason to hate it, the usual being that it is popular.
    Ramco
if i hear the reason one more time i swear im gona kill sum1
Turn off your radio, or change the station. Nobody's forcing you to listen to popular radio or watch MTV.
    Ramco
Hey ramco the reason is overplayed.
It's not Hoobastank's fault it's overplayed. I really don't listen to the radio at all, because if I did I'd hate a lot of songs because they were overplayed (I used to like Smashmouth but they were overplayed and I really haven't listened to them since).
Maybe you should get a better girlfriend (or boyfriend)
That makes absolutely no sense and doesn't have anything to do with the statement. Every relationship has problems, but it's admitting you're at fault when you know you are that keeps one healthy.
if you see mtv or any top 40 station, the reason is constantly played and its pissing the hell out of me.
TURN YOUR FREAKIN' RADIO OFF!!! No one is forcing you to listen to anything. Chances are you might like a song if it wasn't overplayed, but thanks to today's radio trends and MTV by the time you actually notice a song you've already heard it 5 billion times and it already annoys you.
I agree with all the people who say the reason sucks ass.
Well, I think the Beastie Boys suck ass, but you don't see me attacking people over it. Maybe I will just this time - the Beastie Boys are a bunch of wigger homosexuals that can't sing, can't write and are everything everyone hates about pop-punk and rap combined.
If you diasgree ramco. Ram it up ur ex-boyfriends ass
I never said I left my girlfriend, I said we worked it all out. And that is a personal attack at me. I can understand you criticizing a song I like (as long as it isn't as ignorant as "the reason sucks ass, hyuk"), but going after me personally is just low. I won't even sink to that level. The fact that you're acting so juvenile really does show me that you aren't mature enough to accept a song for what it is.

by the way, RevalationStorm, you are THE MAN!! i liked your comment earlier ROCK ON!

Alright ramco: im sorry what i said to you and i take it all back. What I may think does not apply to what you may think. I also take back the personal comments and i hope you accept my apology thanks

All this article does is state that different people like different things. Well duh.
    ILG
i think it has to do with how musically inclined the listener is...if you're a musician then you tend to pick apart the melodies, guitar riffs, lyrics, etc., and decide whether you like something based on that, how well-made the song is, and you also seek out your favorite kind of music, no matter how obscure it is, while people with little or no backround in music tend to listen to things that are catchy, popular, and easily accessible, not really paying attention to whether it holds up musically...just my theory
    Psykotik
They are popular because they are commercial, that's the only reason.
    cam12
all this article just pointed out the obvious, different people like different music, where'd you get your degree?
    Hot Dogs
cam12 is right, you pointed out the obvious, but at least you didn't write a shity biased article like most on here. I give it a 3.
    SURFraptor7
This article was cool... I think Avril Lavigne is just popular because shes somewhat hot. Like a "punk" britney spears, but not as hot. Anyway, the main reason I dont like Avril is that She NAMED HER BAND AFTER HERSELF! How lame is that? Without the rest of their bands, they would suck. I'm surprised that most of their band members havent already left... I know that I'm not calling my band "my name here" band, because that gives my bandmates zero credit. Especially because I KNOW that without them I would suck. But, then again, they (avril) are the rich popular ones, so they must be doing SOMETHING right, even if it does discredit their band... I just know that I wouldnt ever name my band after myself... -good article

Believe me, a lot more people can't accept that than you would think...
