It had been two weeks since Chad had met Emma. He was starting to develop strong feelings for her and eventually asked her out to dinner. She agreed, as he knew she would. He borrowed his fathers sports car and drove down to Jake's house to pick her up.
As he parked near the sidewalk, he could see two figures approaching. It was 8:00 on a winter night, so it was pretty dark. This made it difficult to put names to the figures, but as they got closer, Chad could see that it was Jake and Emma. He unlocked the door and Emma opened it and slid into the passenger seat. She was wearing a pink dress with a diamond necklace around her neck.
"Hey," she said, and gave Chad a kiss on the cheek.
Jake peered through the window. "Hey man. Make sure to have her back by 12, don't want her back to late, now."
"Will do," Chad replied. "I'll talk to you later," he said as he pulled away from the sidewalk and drove off.
"So where are we going to eat?" Emma asked.
"A restaurant in Midtown. It's a really nice spot, 5-star restaurant to be exact."
Emma smiled. "Of course. Couldn't expect anything less from you," She said with a blush.
It took a while to get to the restaurant. The traffic was horrific, and Chad was getting impatient. Emma just gazed out the window. Chad couldn't wait to just have dinner and be able to have a peaceful talk. After about an hour, they reached the restaurant. Chad had already got reservations, so they were seated immediately. After they ordered their meals, they finally got the chance to talk in peace.
"So any word about opening for that band?" Emma asked
Chad sighed. "Nothing..." He said.
"Don't be discouraged, you just have to hang in there!"
"Yeah, I know. I just wish they would let us know already."
"I'm sure things'll work out."
"Yeah, I hope so."
Chad looked around. It was pretty packed here tonight. There were only a few people working, which seemed sort of strange.
"Chad, are you listening?"
"Hmm...?" Chad could not say anything else. He had completely zoned out; Drifted into his own little world for a minute.
"I said that we should go out like this more often."
That made Chad blush. He knew this was the right time to tell her how he felt.
"Listen Emma, we've known each other for a while, and we're good friends, but I think I want to be mo--
There was a gunshot. Everyone's head turned to the center of the room. There were three men, each holding a pistol. They also had on dark hoods, making it difficult to see their faces.
"Everybody on the ground!" The bulkiest man shouted. Everyone obeyed this command, including Chad and Emma. Chad watched as each criminal went to every person, threatening them for wallets and jewelery. He turned to Emma. Her face was red and she was tearing, an obvious look of fear. He brought her close to him and hugged her, constantly telling her that things would be alright.
The bulky man reached them. "Give me the goods," He said. Chad handed him his wallet and Emma unwillingly handed over her diamond necklace. After throwing their things into a leather bag, he reached for Emma's face.
"You're kind of cute," He said. This threw Chad into rage. He got up and punched the man with all his might. This knocked the bulky man out, but the other two saw what Chad had done and shot at him. He fell to the ground, felling the pain of a shot to the leg and a shot to his upper chest. Then he heard Emma screaming and police sirens. They both burned holes into his head. He felt so much pain, mentally and physically. He watched the blurry image of the police arresting the men. Then he watched, half conscience, as men put him on a stretcher and pushed it onto an ambulance. He turned and saw Emma, sitting inside the ambulance as he felt it drive off.
"Please be okay, Chad," She whispered through tears. Then, he fell into a deep sleep.
